Doctors are overworked. Patients are suffering. It doesn't have to be that way.
Dr. Laurie Marbas knew this all too well. It's one of the reasons why she shifted her practice to lifestyle medicine. This is a patient-first approach that seeks to identify and treat the root cause of illnesses rather than treating symptoms exclusively.
In this episode of The Exam Room Podcast, Dr. Marbas and "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll discuss her experience transitioning to lifestyle medicine that can serve as a blueprint for other doctors to begin incorporating it into their practice as well.
Topics Discussed
- Effective outcomes with lifestyle medicine
- Insurance and lifestyle medicine
- Patient success stories
- Health care costs: traditional vs. lifestyle medicine
- Benefits of businesses incorporating lifestyle medicine for employees
- Unhealthy weight loss
- Body composition and maintaining muscle mass after weight loss
This episode was taped live at the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine in Washington, D.C.

Instead of "positive collateral damage" how 'bout "collateral benefit." It's unfortunate that doctors feel compelled to water down the whole-food vegan diet message to make it more "palatable" for their patients. They certainly wouldn't prescribe medications at half the dose. Thanx for the convo, Chuck and Dr. Laurie.

I just got certified as a nurse coach, which is an RN trained to be a holistic wellness coach. This area of healthcare is growing and I feel like it's a BIG part of the answer! We have sessions with clients each week for an hour, starting where they're at and working towards healthy lifestyle changes that they're motivated to make. I'm hoping insurance starts paying for it bc it has the potential to make significant changes in the health of our country!

John MacKay former owner of Whole Foods. A business that sold/sells overpriced food and products and paid/pay their employees so poorly that they cannot afford to shop where they work. Also all part time so they have no benefits including health insurance. Most of the physicians that worked with Marva’s have left since MacKay took over, so…

Start with honesty. I can't tell you how many doctors have disappointed me with lies or sugar coating or just ignoring what I've said in general. It took 27 yrs for way too many doctors, family and GI, to tell me they couldn't find anything wrong with me other than IBS. Finally, after the ulcers triggering an atrial flutter, an er doctor took me seriously and finally found an ulcer. The next er doctor told me he was wrong btw. Anyway, 27 yrs of feeling like no one cared or listened to me. It got to the point I was down with pain for 6 to 10 days at a time every 2 to 3 weeks. It was horrible. I went to a GI doctor that finally did the camera scope and found 3 huge black ulcers in my intestines. I saw the pics. They looked awful and scary. No one ever told me or suggested that a plant based diet would be helpful or I would have tried it a long long time ago. I was told by my current GI doctor that it doesn't matter what I eat in the long run just follow the meds. I had an appt with the same doctor today. I've seen him for 3 years and the ulcer has gotten worse not better. I ended our appt today angrily because not once did he a t like he cared I was in pain for 6 days and after I told him I was already considering ways to kill myself if I had to go through that pain again, he told me to call my family doctor. Wouldn't you have been angry? I hate doctors, I'm sorry to say it, but they have ruined my life, not made it healthier .

Knowing former pharmaceutical Detail Reps, if Lifestyle Medicine physicians really wanted to get their patients attention and motivate them to change their ways and at the same time provide them with a “why”, then they should one by one go over and explain all the possible side effects attached to that drug, including warnings, adverse reactions and contraindications. If patients really understood the consequences of taking a drug verses simply changing their lifestyle then their “why” may be more meaningful.

Really ? In whole of America there is only 2% people who eat a plant based diet and are vegans or vegetarians ? Can’t believe that!😮 I am sure you have not taken a proper survey or done a proper research Chuck sir! Me and ht family are an example of vegetarian vegan eating family and there are plenty others too - stay with most Indian Americans- we are ( the Hindus at least !) most of us vegans it vegetarians by choice from birth 😊 and chose to live that way - but not necessary we eat healthy all the time though- as plant based eaters we tend to eat junk foods too often outside like French fries abd cakes pastries puzza sweets donuts etc etc too! So the question is - how to stop sugar cravings n junk food addictions?😊

Yes true- we don’t really get too much cravings for sugary junk foods and French fries, pizza donuts etc etc when we eat plant based foods mostly- but when in company once a while , and we are celebrating an event or bday or anniversary or wedding , engagement any such occasions - when the host offers and we refuse it’s not polite and makes the host or hostess feel that she is not doing her best with the guests and upsets her,so we have no choice but like others - accept whatever everyone else is eating for that occasion - a friends night out, ladies night out , office party , etc etc on such occasions it’s not always proper to throw a tantrum n refuse to eat what others are eating and ask to order different foods- so on such occasions I meant it’s tough to say No” in. Social gatherings too, some amount of junk food - it may not be all junk but some amount maybe sweets , cakes or fried foods etc -, it’s ok to eat a little not too much plant based once a while as long as you keep small portions and make up by burning it’ out exercising n doing better next couple days ! ‘ come on- we need to live a little - life is not always eating plant based healthy and always regular boring - we are allowed to eat a little junk foods once a while ok - keep portions small so you don’t overdo it! Chill out! 😊

@@user-yw4br3yq1b In your first comment, you ask how to stop sugar cravings and junk food additions, but then in your second comment you contradict yourself by stating it is okay to eat some sugary or junk foods. There is nothing wrong with refusing to eat what others are eating so long as you communicate it tactfully to them.

NOOOOOOOOOOO to group medical visits. I’m very private introvert. I loathe groups. It’s also like social media health pages, a bunch of uneducated people voicing their ignorant opinions.
