Looking at the four titles of the dormant Clock Tower Series, which laid some of the foundations of survival horror.
While never a huge seller and its last entry in the series is almost 20 years old, Clock Tower plays an important role in the foundations of survival horror and how it evolved.

Clock Tower beat Resident Evil to the market by a few months.
Clock Tower's focus on hiding and escaping from pursuers has made its way into many other titles, from the heavy hitters in the genre from Resident Evil to numerous indie titles.
Clock Tower first released in 1995, back when this type of game was mostly unexplored territory, got so much right, with its atmosphere aging very well.
Unfortunately, the point-and-click design approach of Clock Tower would work against the future titles in the series. When it did escape that mold, the resulting title, while enjoyable and charming, did lose a lot of that atmosphere that made the original title so special. It also goes way out there and in so many disjointed directions, and yet I can't help but respect it.
Sadly, the Clock Tower series has been dormant since the early 2000s, although it has had spiritual successors like Haunting Ground which took the Clock Tower formula and enhanced it.
In this video, we'll look at the four Clock Tower titles: Clock Tower, Clock Tower 2, Clock Tower: Ghost Head, and Clock Tower 3.

My first time watching that whole thing play out, I got so immersed in the sweet moment between Albert and his mother that when Corroder burst in, I was genuinely startled and disturbed by what happened. It's a surprisingly good moment in the game, and the one that's stuck with me the most for how well it was done. Runner up to that moment would be May & Mr. Norton's scenes, I liked their little story as well and I always get the warm fuzzies when I see them reunited again. What a mysterious jogo this game is.

About the motion capture for Clock Tower 3. I do recall this being one of the very early games from Capcom that implemented it with such detail. For its time it blew me away with how well it captured the actor’s movements, to just seeing items be knocked off a shelf in the environment. It’s something we take for granted now, but back then we were so used to still/immobile backgrounds in games. Clock Tower 3’s performances came off as a play indeed, but I can help feeling it was a flex too 🥲

I'd honestly be curious how Japanese players look back on the acting in this game. In my experience, even Japan's more serious live action media tends to be larger than life and more "play-like" than Western live action. When I first saw the motion capture source footage for Clock Tower 3, the acting had a very familiar look to me.

I can remember being in 7th grade and playing Clock Tower 2 at a sleep over at my friend Jesse's house. Despite the crude blocky graphics and the awkward point and click controls, the game was still absolutely terrifying. That night, Jesse's younger brother Jamey was hanging around occasionally as we played, he was perhaps 11 when we were 13, and he was visibly unsettled by the game. I did one of the meanest things I can remember doing to someone at that age: as Jamey was coming around a corner in the darkened hallway, I jumped out and yelled "SCISSORMAN!" He screamed in fear while his brother and I laughed our asses off, and then burst into tears, crying and cussing me out. I immediately felt horrible about it and tried to apologize, but obviously he was not in a forgiving mood and I think it was a few weeks before he talked to me again. Crazy how two years can make such a difference in maturity at those ages...and damn can kids be evil little bastards! I still feel bad about it!

Clock Tower is a game that I hold really close to my heart, one of those games that got me in the path of enjoying the thrill of the scares and yeah, the first game is definately a classic but I have this special love for Clock Tower 3, the cutscenes and the animations and the scenarios with the spirits it was just oozing with love, now as an artist I can see that a lot of care was put into it, even if it's goofy sometimes, the animations of Alyssa being terrified and making those wild turns and acting scared of the sledgehammer or the sheer terror that honestly I can still feel it to this day when seeing the cutscene of the son and the blind mother, Jesus Christ, I think the main point wasn't to be scared it was just the sudden change of tone of the scene that honestly many many years ago I still crumble with fear and shock when I see it, you don't need to make something incredibly terrifying to scare someone, just that change of tone in the scene was enough to get relegated in my memory forever (now as an artist I appreciate it even more). And this is going to sound contradictory, but the goofiness of the scissorhand brothers was actually very charming in a twisted way, like geez they were freaks but they have this charisma to them that you just gotta appreciate. I really hope the series can come back someday, first fear would be a good candidate to test the waters in a new system with maybe alternative routes or live selections for decisions on the spot, inspired in the original Resident Evil 3. It is the most atmospheric of the three games so something really nice can come out with the right direction. Let's hope it happens :)

The rapid switch from heartwarming to violence makes those scenes really work for me. Even rewatching them in this video made me a bit uncomfortable. I sort of hate how depressing it is, but I can't say that's inappropriate for horror. I think it's one of the reasons that Sledgehammer and Corroder stuck with me much more than Chopper or the Scissor Twins. The latter are more of a gameplay threat while the first two have much more of a realistically terrifying "normal day turns tragic" element to them.

Clock Tower is one of those sad series that started very strong, with an iconic title, then went on with weaker iterations. Clock Tower III is kind of an oddball, it has its charm while being resolutely goofy for moments. Alas, the PS1 titles could be entirely ignored. Stating that the first one is a good follow-up is quite generous, the story is paper-thin and quite convoluted (gotta love the fact that Scissors Man scatter the characters without killing them outright in his castle, very fair play of him), the different endings are an illusion- only several degrees of failure. And, plainly, it lacks the scare factor. As for Ghost Head, it reminds me of the 'one-true-path' Gamebooks : there is only one road to victory and more often than not, it is nonsensical and yoy may fail long after a "mistake" that you never knew you did. Haunting Grounds is a nice spiritual successor, the first title coul use a remake- other than that, I think the series can stay dormant.

Clock Tower 3 was my first look at the series when a girlfriend of mine picked it up. I'm not a big horror/slasher person, generally speaking, but there was a lot it did with the first case from the music and overall production that I found to be great. Once we got the bow and everything went silly....well, I sort of felt like it took the punch of the horror away. I want to one day play it again to at least see it through to the end. I don't mess around too much with emulators, but I probably should find a way to play the first one.

It dawned on me during the first 6 minutes of this just how horrifying these games are, and I'd never heard of them before. You did a fantastic job showcasing them in an interesting way right out of the gate.

The thing I like the most about Clock Tower 3 is how "adorable", I think that would be the best way to put it, the writting is at times. The girl and her father; The son and his elderly mom; I felt genuinely sad when they died. I think the only other games that I've seen do something similar was the Echo Night series.

About Struggle Within not being tied with the Barrows family, this is incorrect. The entire premise of TSW is that the "curse" of the Maxwell family is Dan and Bobby being resurrected through Twins every few generations. Alyssa and Bates are those twins, and that is why they were buried in the woods. Bates died but lived through Alyssa(The Drama CD creates a lore hole where the twin was supposedly female as well) The ritual and the Golden Statue in Clock Tower 1 was Mary casting a spell that ensured that they would come be birthed once more in the future as well as time immortality. You first become aware of the connection when you read Allen Hale's letter to Phillip Tates that mentions a ritual. There is a connection, but as usual the game makes little to no indication to what exactly happened. It is speculated because Alyssa lived that the curse continued on, which is why we have the Scissor twins. It's not confirmed. Nice video.

Ghost Head really haunted my dreams as a kid. Never knew the name of the game but remember watching a cousin playing it once. I don't think he ever left the house. For the longest time I thought it was a fake game that I dreamed about. Happy that I finally found it but also sad that it's so bad.

Great video, by the way. 1 is still my favorite cause of how well it's aged but I feel 2 (as in the direct sequel to 1, not Ghost Head) has it's own charm even if it hasn't aged as well.

There's this game called NightCry, which is, apparently, from the creators of Clock Tower. From what I saw, it plays a lot like Clock Tower, with the hiding places, stamina and the like.

clock tower 2 scared the shit outta me as a kid, I loved it. me and a friend rented it and stayed up all night playing it. I actually still have a complete physical copy of it for PS. and the main thing that hurt CT3 for me is that during the boss fights you couldn't adjust your aim once you drew the bow, so if the boss moved you were SOL. I've also even contemplated cosplaying as scissorman.

Clock tower 3 was such a defining moment in my childhood. My parents were no strangers to horror, and my dad would often play... not so appropriate games with me in the room (*cough* god of war *cough*). I was lucky enough to witness him play through the first bit of clock tower 3. I barely recall anything past sledgehammer, but i do remember the scissor twins. Gave me nightmares for weeks. It's funny how easily scared i was then, and how much of a horror fan i am now...

When I first found the Clock Tower series and told some of my online friends on a gaming forum/site, they all thought Scissorman was some sort of Slenderman rip off trend. xD kinda like how everyone was obsessed with Jeff the Killer then moved onto the Rake then became obsessed with making fan games of Slenderman and stuff.

Clock Tower 3 ah a game I can never forget, 1ve the games my mom played & couldn't beat same with Resident Evil 1 (couldn't ever figure out how to get out the 1st floor/foyer area) Clock Tower we vividly remember her stuck in this room with a stage & couldn't figure out how tf to get out, even when i tried I couldn't figure it out. Games really were poorly designed wtf to do back then.
