As Appalachian in the US, it really isn’t news to me that a group can be looked down upon by their own countrymen. There’s even municipality laws in place in cities around the Appalachian mountains where people have tried to either ban discrimination against the accent, or encourage it. Children are often encouraged to shed their accents, turns of phrase and colloquialisms so they have a better chance of leaving the mountains, and the poverty, for what’s seen as a better life in the flatlands.

Very sad to hear that. I've been fascinated with English dialects/accents for as long as I can remember, and Appalachian English always was one of the more interesting ones. Knowing how difficult it is to find recordings of it already, it truly is saddening to hear that the dialect is still being shunned...

Late to the party, but hi! Half of my family is from West Virginia/southeast Ohio. I LOVE the mountains and wish the people there were treated with the respect they deserve (though I wish the people there weren't so, shall we say, bigoted; I haven't visited my grandfather's grave in over a decade because I don't want to be killed). They deserve access to education, good food, clean water, healthcare, and employment opportunities that aren't centered around the coal mines. Just because they're "simple folk," (my mom, who is from WV, describes the people of WV this way, and she doesn't mean it in a mean or condescending way) doesn't mean they're not intelligent or undeserving of any of the things I listed.

The minute you go to Hamilton, Motherwell, Ayrshire it all changes... plus people in Steps and Riddrie don't talk like people from the Gorbals or Govan and certainly not like Clarkeston or Bearsden (thats due to "class" more than anything as Darren pints out)... At the end of the day there is no "Glasgow accent" in the same way there is no "Edinburgh accent" or "Scottish Accent" or "British accent". A very interesting piece none the less.

French Anglophile here. Really interesting stuff, though not too sure about trusting RP speakers more than Scottish ones. I remember phone calls from my bank when I was broke and thinking how much nicer it was to hear a Scottish English speaker than a middle class RP speaker telling me effectively the same thing.

About 20 years ago, my two sons and I were on a flight to Glasgow. I picked up the accent of the two men beside us and told my Canadian boys that they were from Glasgow. My sons were unimpressed. A little while later, the two men engaged me in conversation. "We're frae Glesgeh," they said. I nodded, knowingly. My boys had to acknowledge their mother knew more than they thought she did. (My parents are from Fife, and I visited Scotland often as a child.) Also, I would never look down on a person with a Glasgow accent.

Scottish is Scottish for me as a learner. It sounds soft to my ear and very nice. It needn't be "proper English". I am actually sick of "typical British English" audiotapes teaching me some "proper English pronunciation". I can do a "proper grammar", but I am tired of listening to someone speaking as if they are robots from England speaking to a peasant.

I am not Glaswegian but from a town 20 minutes from Glasgow and I also say Societ(-ie) and then when I want to be heard and clear Societ(y). It's the same with many words, talk to my dad, Aye. Talking to my boss, Yes. It is like we instinctively switch accents to fit into appear more refined and upper class without thinking about it. There is no reason for me to say, Yes, every English speaker knows what Aye means yet my brain just does it. I think this is because our education system teaches us we can't be successful the way we talk naturally, even within Scotland. No one shames Americans for saying, Y'all.

That sucks. I know some history of the UK but I didn't think the accent was that looked down upon. I personally like the accent and the slang to me is as good as bogan Aussie lol. Kinda crazy that it's the same chunk of land and the same language is so different and ostracized. Honestly I like how it sounds more down to earth than normal Brit, sounds less pretentious and from the heart. Coming from a dude from the US.

Without meaning to put down Glaswegians, I think it's because the accent is associated with depressingly dysfunctional and antisocial people and places, an image exacerbated by stereotypes presented by media and culture, but not without some truth to it I would say. These things aren't the fault of weegies, caused by politics and economics, but regardless of blame, that's the association now, IMO.

@Ripped Torn I was just thinking the exact same thing! I'm from Glasgow, but I have what might be considered a more 'posh' Glaswegian accent. The feelings I sometimes get when conversing with people from certain (obvious) parts of England is horrible... That condescending vibe when they describe my accent as very 'broad'. Also, they apparently feel perfectly entitled to say the most obnoxious, ignorant things about my Country, and when I rightly correct them, they recoil as though I'm being overly defensive, or dare I say it, 'aggressive'. Never people from Liverpool though - I love people from Liverpool!

I was born in Glesga 1948, moved away in 1966 and today people still can hear Im Scottish but they become surprised that they can understand me as they have been in Glasgow before and so my accent has mellowed out as Ive moved around the World since 1966... individual opinions vary but the point they're trying to get across is that the accent is treated as if it were the most unattractive because of the prejudice shown towards it. the adjective is not being used as an insult but rather to explain what is happening (in society at large)

The accent isn't unattractive at all. I have a Glasgow accent. But I don't use the colloquialism, dialect or vernacular that he uses. Too many Glaswegians are allowed to adopt lazy speech. Accents are irrelevant wherever you go in the UK. It's dialect and pronunciation that attracts prejudice.

Nowadays most whites kids in London speak English with a hybrid Jamaican dialect which is very different from the anglo saxon dialect of English which is spoken in this t.v programme by this presenter. In the early 2000's, young white kids on council estates in London became JAMAICANISED. This is when they starting speaking with English with a hybrid Jamaican dialect. For example, Essex county is the only place in Britain where the cockney dialect/and or accent is still spoken. TO SUMMARISE: In the 1980's all the national British companies when through a process called national - PRIVATISATION - and then almost - SIMULTANEOUSLY - all the poor - NATIONAL - white kids endured a process called - JAMAICANISATION - which did indeed definitely - LEAD - to all poor - NATIONAL - white girls on estates quickly - UNDERGO - a process called Jamaican extreme - INSEMINATION - and thus all the young - RESULTING - half cast babies initiated a full - NATIONAL - process called extreme - BASTARDISATION. Remember everyone, that the last point regarding bastardisation is entirely optional, and is not my view but instead is the view of white nationalists.
