Ps = -10dBm , Pr=-46dBm Pt=Ps-Pr =( -10 ) - (- 46) =36dB..........(when you are subtracting powers in dBm the resultant answer is in dB)

Hi! I wanted to ask... What would be different if this was for a WDM system?like would the losses be multiplied into the number of channels?? Or not

Connector loss is only at reciever so it should be 1.5 itself

Components are chosen for a digital optical fiber link of overall length 7 km and operating at a 20 Mbit/s using an RZ code. It is decided that an LED emitting at 0.85 µm with graded index fiber to a p-i-n photodiode is a suitable choice for the system components, giving no dispersion equalization penalty. An LED which is capable of launching an average of 100 W of optical power [including connector loss into a 50 urn core diameter graded index fiber is chosen]. The proposed fiber cable has an attenuation of 2.6 dB/km and requires splicing every km with a loss of 0.5 dB per splice. There is also a connector loss at the receiver of 1.5 dB. The receiver requires mean incident optical power of-41 dBm in order to give the necessary BER of 10-10, and it is predicted that a safety margin of 6 dB will be required. Write down the optical power budget for the system and hence determine its viability.

The conversion of Tx power from mW to dB is not accurate. In optical communication systems, power levels are usually an absolute unit measured relative to 1 milliwatt (mW). So we can just use Ps = -10dBm and Pr = - 46dBm to get same answer but in this case it makes sense in the real-world context in which the calculation is applied.

for Pr why did you minus 30 to convert from Db/Km to Db

It is dBm to dB conversation
@indraprakash2393Ай бұрын
@@EngineeringFunda it should be dBw not dB because dBm is the unit of power while dB is the ratio, dBw is unit of power.

dB is a adimensional unit, dBm is unit referred to 1 mW.... You can´t change that unit to other... your dB is dBW no dB

i have a doubt. how the dBm is converted in to dB? i think the way used here is wrong. we can convert dBW to dBm using this formula P(dBW) = P(dBm) - 30 (The power in dBW (P(dBW)) is equal to 10 raised by the power in dBm (P(dBm)) divided by 10 )
