The whole point of this type of sampling is that it is a *variable-radius* plot. The area of the plot differs depending on the size of the tree you are considering. With the prism, very large trees can be far away and still *in* while a small tree needs to be closer. Each prism is calibrated with a Basal Area Factor and refracts light in a way that accounts for both the size of the tree and the distance from the viewer.
