What part of the country are you I'm north wales we have white soft sand I'd put that in to make a mix What ever sand you chose to use ide mix a sample first just mix a batch up using a small cup and mix your ratios the same

Hi Glen the house I bought is early 1980's I believe, it doesn't need to be completely repointed, but there's a few missing bits/holes that need filling in, with your experience, would it be safe to say portland cement was used on a building this age and not lime? Cheers

Yeah most likely Unless it was built in a heritage, are and the specified lime Is the mortar grey in colour

Its not easy finding the right sand. My local building merchants sells the perfect washed grit sand by the ton but doesn't sell it in 25kg bags, i then mix it with washed silver sand. I always dry my sand in a big bucket for a week or so by placing small tube heaters at the bottom of the bucket My college tutor said sharp sand is shaped like triangles under a magnifying glass & grit sand looks like round balls. I've never been able to get sharp sand & don't fancy traveling 100miles just to find out its not what I was expecting

@@GMTpointingspecialistsltd yes we have a few quarries walking distance, my dad told me that alot of flagstones were shipped down to London to use there. He also told me that when the quarry was at its peak in business at least one person died every day, which is sad really Anyhow I will enquire more on the sharp sand. Thanks
