I use several integrated and adapted notations in this task. Obsidian/Excalidraw is allowing an integration, structuring and organization between this knowledge to achieve success in my project.

Zsolt, thanks a lot for your work. Your new features on flowcharts will be very useful to save time.Is there a parameter (activable or not) to go directly in text edition just after create a shape ? A brainstorm with excalidraw will be very efficient with this feature. You push on an arrow, validate shape creation and directly edit text into the shape, etc...

pressing ENTER will switch to text editing. So you can navigate with ALT and CTRL Arrows, and press Enter to edit text, and ESC (or CTRL+ENTER) to finish editing text

This plugin has some really awesome features, and it's clear it's only getting better. My only qualm is that for me as a new user, it's hard to find the answers to questions when a lot of the info is scattered across videos. For example, I've been trying to figure out what SVGs are permissible for icons in the Tools Panel for a custom user script, but I can't find that anywhere. I also don't know where the library items are stored in the vault, in what form, and how to access the location to add/remove items individually. Having a proper centralized "manual" or "FAQ" would make working with the plugin much more efficient for new users. Much love to you for putting so much work into this plugin. It's a game-changer, and I'll keep on this learning curve as best I can!

Maintaining documentation is challenging, especially when the plugin is evolving so rapidly. The difficulty is compounded by the fact that the plugin exists at the intersection of two actively changing platforms: Obsidian, which frequently introduces new features and changes that the plugin must accommodate, and Excalidraw.com, which is also under active development. While this is great from a feature-richness perspective, I have little or no influence over either of these, so my main focus is on creating the "superglue" that keeps the plugin functional. Although the vast majority of my changes are backwards compatible, certain aspects - like the grouping and sequence of settings within the plugin - tend to change more frequently. However, we might be reaching a point where a community-driven documentation effort could be both feasible and beneficial. Regarding your questions: Script icons should be SVG files named exactly the same as the script. Unfortunately, some automation I built into this process has limitations that I can’t undo without disrupting existing script icons. By examining a few icons that work, you should be able to deduce how to format your SVGs for use as script icons. As for library items, they’re stored in data.json within .obsidian/plugins/excalidraw-obsidian-plugin.

You will find the link in the splash screen when you start the app. As for some of your ideas like mermaid, you can convert mermaid to excalidraw as well as prompt GPT to generate mermaid flows in Excalidraw. As for the other ideas... I welcome ideas, but: 1) usually the question is not ideas but having time to implement them 2) because this is a hobby project, your biggest task is not to come up with suggestions but to convince me why I can't live without that feature. To ensure I don't lose my passion for the project I only work on features I use and would enjoy myself. Nothing else.

Thank you so much for your work! Could you add an option to have more colors available on the main screen (for Stroke and Background)? There are 5 of them by default, and it's a bit uncomfortable to go to the colors menu every time to change the color.

Thank you for all your work. I'm having a problem with the PDF++ preview. The copied link is correct but does not appear in Excalidraw. The object even exists and I can click and get to the PDF section, but I can't see it in Excalidraw. Any suggestions?

@jackzhan8527 faced similar issues but got it resolved by: "Because the file name of the PDF I opened has a structure of "[[ ]] " at the beginning, which results in "[[[[ ]]]]" appearing in the link." Maybe you are facing the same issue?

​@@VisualPKM Thanks for the answer, but my problem is actually that the background color of the preview is following the background color of excalidraw, which is in dark mode, and the black content disappears. So I had to switch to light mode since I couldn't find a setting that would change this behavior. If there is one, please let me know

@@hiagorafaelsilva180 add a document property to your file "excalidraw-embeddable-theme: light" or dark, or auto, or default you can configure the default in plugin settings. Depending on how you add the document properties you should close and reopen the Excalidraw file for the property to take effect.

@@hiagorafaelsilva180 "excalidraw-embeddable-theme: auto" should ensure the theme of the embeddable follows Excalidraw theme. Light embeddable in Excalidraw light mode, dark embeddable in dark mode. In settings look for Excalidraw Appearance and Behavior > Theme and Styling > Markdown embeds to match Excalidraw theme However if you have a document property like above that take precedence, thus plugin settings will have no effect on that file.

Hey Zsolt, is there a way I can link things together similar to Scrintal or Heptabase, and see / search for those links? Like if I have a branch called Ice Cream can I draw a line to Favorite Things and then when I open Favorite Things or Ice Cream in obsidian I can see the links?

You can develop your own Excalidraw Automate script to apply links to your markdown notes. The underlying issue is that Obsidian will infer links based on the contents of your markdown notes not the drawing... So if you place [[file 1]] and [[file 2]] on [[drawing]] then Obsidian will show [[file 1]] and [[file 2]] linked to [[drawing]]. But if you want to link [[file 1]] with [[file 2]] on your [[drawing]] with an arrow such that Obsidian also sees a link between [[file 1]] and [[file 2]] then you need to modify [[file 1]] and/or [[file 2]] based on the drawing. You need a script that interprets the arrow and adds a link to [[file 1]] in [[file 2]] or to [[file 2]] in [[file 1]]. You could maybe create these additional links in document properties of [[file 1]] and/or [[file 2]]. The challenge you'll face when developing this script will be keeping track of changes. What happens when you delete the arrow on [[drawing]] between [[file 1]] and [[file 2]]? If [[file 3]] was on the drawing, and had a link to [[file 2]] but not an arrow on the drawing, what do you do? I could imagine 2 solutions... 1) A simple linker script, that you need to run manually, and which will create the links as represented on the drawing adding links between connected elements. This script would not maintain changes but would give you a once off opportunity to transform your arrows into file links. 2) Build a complex an indexer of sorts that would process all your Excalidraw files, then update all the impacted markdown files in your vault using a dedicated document property managed by the indexer. But that would be a very invasive approach and a complex indexe logic. I personally think 1) is not very useful in practice, and 2) is difficult to write and again not very useful in practice. But both options can be developed.

@@VisualPKM Thank you for such a detailed response! I wonder, is there a sort of "listener" that I could implement that in real time checks for changes to specific elements/properties? Perhaps something even from the f11 menu? Honestly, option 1 could be very good. Both scrintal and heptabase have severe shortcomings, so even a one-off linker could achieve the bulk of the work. Another possibility, just to have a line drawn from card-to-card if there is a [[reference]] to that card? and then allow the line to be changed in its color and curvature manually so as not to directly interfere with too much? So if I want to have a line appear from Cat to Dog I could just reference [[Dog]] in the cat note, then have a customizable line appear on the canvas

With minimal changes the writing machine script could be converted into what you are looking for (as for the Option 1 once off). I bet even ChatGPT could do it for you if you supplied it with this full conversation and the script from Writing Machine. I'd start my prompt like this: Modify this ExcalidrawAutomate script to....

when the pen is active you can double tap with your finger to toggle between pen-mode and eraser mode. I think that is good enough Apple Pencil, Samsung S-pen and the likes all require dedicated software components in the host app which are missing from Obsidian. Obsidian and Excalidraw are cross platform solutions, as such it is not realistic to support the special features of each individual platform they operate on.

did you check this release? "Smooth ink flow" addresses exactly that issue. 2.4.0 comes with significant improvements when you have many elements in the scene. The one I demonstrate in the video has over 4000 elements and adding new elements remains smooth, though it may slow down when you zoom out to something like 10%

I am using Ipad and I cannot insert images from my photos app or even take a picture without the app warning me I need to do something for the image to be saved and the instructions make no sense in the context of interfacing with this app through a mobile device. Ultimately it wants me to create a new pane (what is that?) and paste it over there. Another issue is for the Utility tool bar icons - I cant figure out what they are - I hover over them and get no text description. I also can't figure how to crop the image - the answers to all my issues seem to be hidden and the plug in does not work as expected. I overlaid a box over the image and i could not figure out how to get the box on top of the image layer except by trial and error because the layer icons don't tell me what they do with any text upon hovering over them.

Sounds strange. I tested it now on my iPad adding a photo from the Photo Library, Taking a Photo and Choosing a File. All worked as expected. No error message and the image was added correctly. How are you adding the picture? There is an image icon between the "A" - letter tool and the eraser in the top toolbar. That is the one I was using. Of course "Insert Any File" and the command palette "Insert Image" actions also work (tested it now to double check) in case the image you want to use is in your Vault. if the issue prevails please make a screenshot of the message and share it on github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw/issues

I'm from Brazil. I suggest incorporating it into the "generate" group, which has the marmeid plugin, tools for generating BPMN, CMMN and DMN diagrams, collaboration, choreography and Archimate 3.2.

excalidraw.com offers collaboration. I have videos on how to integrate that into your Obsidian experience. However, Obsidian is a PKM tool, where P stands for Personal. Collaboration features are not my priority - you can do that on excalidraw.com. I am focused on the P aspect. Also this is a visual thinking tool, not a process or system modeling tool, for that there are many dedicated tools. For example at work I use SPARX Enterprise Architect for serious modeling.

@@jackzhan8527 Probably YT is the possible worst place to debug an issue like this. I can only suggest that you look around in PDF++ settings. Can you select a rectangular area and paste the result here in the comments? I want to see that it appears as a proper link ![[my.pdf#....]] Be sure to disable paste as image in PDF++ settings. PDF++ has many settings... and you'll need to read it yourself, My guess is that the solution is there somewhere. How do you paste to Excalidraw?

Hello, I have a problem with the selection of an area of PDF to paste it in Excalidraw, if my PDF is in portrait mode it works correctly, but if the PDF is in landscape mode, the pasted area is not correct, it seems that the coordinates are not correct, but if I paste it in a note Obsidian, it is the correct area that appears! This sounds like this could be a bug. I assume you are talking about PDF++. I don't see a feature for rotating a page portrait vs. landscape in PDF++, is there a feature I am not seeing? Or you are saying that if you take a page in a landscape layout (e.g. a slide) then the cutout comes out wrong? I just tried it with a slide. It worked as expected for me. Does this happen with all your documents? or just one? If you can share more details and perhaps provide a sample document as well as some screenshots and more elaborate description I can take a look at the issue. You mean you embedded a pdf page as an image and you are writing over the image? How did you import the page, into frames? Did you try importing not into frames? How many pages have you imported? Does this happen with all your PDFs? Is your PDF just A4 text or something different? In Excalidraw plugin settings under Embed files into Excalidraw > PDF to Image > PDF to Image conversion scale try to set a lower number. The lower the number the faster the performance but the lower resolution of the imported page. I don't know if it's the new update, but i was working in a Excalidraw file, then updated to this version, was all correct until half/hour later my whole scene blow up, and all the previous drawings got lost. The file is now empty. 😢😢

@@VisualPKM I'm sorry, english is not my first lenguaje. I was in Excalidraw, solving some calculus exercises (using the pen), but at some point, the screen indicated 'error ....' and everything got deleted. Then, the classic start screen with the sword inside the Obsidian logo appeared, as if the file was completely new (though the file name remained the same). I regret not being able to specify the error or the code it showed; the frustration of losing my drawings didn’t let me think clearly. If there’s anything else to add, it’s that I was using the new 'Canvas and Shape Properties' feature, where I was editing the grid. Maybe that caused the error. If the error happens again, I’ll take a screenshot.

The more information you can gather the better, until I can reproduce an error, I can't fix it - assuming there was indeed an error. Plase share information about a next occurrence here: github.com/zsviczian/obsidian-excalidraw-plugin/ I do recommend turning on a service like Obsidian Sync to back up your data. BTW - Even if you are not using Obsidian sync but another service like OneDrive, Google Drive or iCloud, etc., these other services usually keep versions of your files, so you should be able access an earlier version of the file before the crash.

So First thoughts "Wow that ink update really worked" and a bit of feedback that it "may stutter" like right at end of your "draw session" like I Write or make something in one stroke and its smooth but right at the end when I leave the click , it "lags a bit" (a tinny little bit), So I tried random clicking like You create a dotted line in real life, dot dot dot dot, And could notice it (but i think it also may be due to me having very poor hardware, and no dedicated GPU, 6GB ram tho) Creating lines very fastly in 1 stroke does not seem to create that "effect"

That is an interesting feature request. Probably needs to be solved at the Excalidraw component level, not in the Obsidian plugin. i suggest opening a feature request here: github.com/excalidraw/excalidraw/issues
