I can guarantee you are not a pipe layer. Nothing wrong with the machine at all. Even has an Engcon steel wrist with tongs, that’s a step up than a plain Jane excavator. You dig with a grading bucket because it leaves a smoother finish. You don’t always need a bucket with teeth. Also, the grading bucket makes dumping stone easier. People who don’t do this type of work see a grading bucket digging and think it should have teeth on it when it doesn’t need a bucket with teeth. A grading bucket will dig just as good as a digging bucket if the soil is like this. Also, when digging around other utilities, a grading bucket is used to minimize the chance of damage to existing utilities. Been in this game a long time.

Definitely needs a digging bucket with teeth , losing to much power with the rotary tilt as it is and you can easily slope the banks with no roto tilt and pulling digging bucket flat on the bottom of the trench will leave it plenty good for bedding

@Jimmfhalpert5 жыл бұрын
He did check his grade, he is using a pipe laser. You can see his beam when they are digging out(he kept checking it with his shovel), and also his target sitting on top of the pipe at the end of the video. His grade must have been a hair high, which is why the excavator pushed down on the top of the pipe. When they hooked both joints and lifted them it was to home the pipe. Other than being extremely slow I don't see where they went wrong.

@@rustydumper Greta work and the right bucket. People who don’t do this think you need a bucket with teeth, digging bucket, to dig. That is not correct. Especially in the underground utility world. Grading bucket dogs smoother and lessens the chance of damage to existing utilities around the new installation. Grading bucket also gives you better control while stoning. These guys are a well working team and the operator knows what he is doing and is very smooth. It’s easy to pick out people who don’t do this work when they call a grading bucket a ditching bucket.
@rustydumper Жыл бұрын
@@mikeznel6048 lol I do this for a living, it's the wrong bucket, look at the state of the trench. With a toothed bucket you don't end up with a trench looking like a 4 year old dug it plus there isn't a whole lot of communication between ground and operator thus bad practice. A good ground guy can tell when he's near to a pipe run just by assessing the ground, between that guy and a competent engineer it's not that difficult.

@strangefruit87765 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you look closely you’ll see the beam every now and then. They make special lasers that you put in the pipe or a manhole and you can set the pitch of fall or rise from level plane and aim them in a straight line down the pipe. Then you use a little target that sits inside the end of the pipe you just laid to check and see if it’s on each time you lay a new joint. You can also mark your distance from flowline to bottom of pipe on a rake so that your ditch hand can fine grade and check grade with the rake he’s using before you set the pipe in. It’s a good idea though to at least check your work with a normal laser at some point so you know your pipe laser is putting you where you need to be.
@strangefruit87765 жыл бұрын
At about 5:44 you can see him checking his grade with his shovel. We generally use a rake with the offset distance marked on it with a piece of tape to check the ditch bottom with.
