A great explanation of issue Chris, but I am at a loss to understand why the numbers are changing to text in the first place? I only came across this issue when I moved into another office and used another computer. I just knew the functions did not seem to give the proper result. There are many videos about fixing the issue but none explaining why it happens in the first place. In your example why did you get 5 cells with text and all the others were numbers. Is there anywhere a default can be set to say it looks like a number, insert it as one? Considering spreadsheets are for manipulating numbers it would seem to be a smart option to have in the setup.

Here is my blog post on this topic. This question came from a PMBA student at the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. My blog post contains a link to the file I used also. The blog post link is chrismenardtraining.com/post/excel-5-easy-ways-to-identify-numbers-stored-as-text
