Each year the Kuspuk School District from the Middle Kuskokwim Region in Alaska takes students on an adventure of a lifetime. Some years over 30 students in grades 7-12 from around the region participate to learn about leadership skills, science, and math. Teachers and biologists work together to give the students a wonderful hands on learning experience in the 10-days they're in the wilderness. One biologist - Doug Molyneaux - a retired Dept. of Fish & Game biologist has been working with the 5th and 6th graders to prepare them for the actual trip in what he calls the "Simulation Excercise".
Students pretend to catch juvenile salmon, Dolly Varden, and rainbow trout - then measure, weigh, and graph the results just like the older students do out in the field.
