From our Teamate, pa beader, we want to Define the terms used in the video with more accuracy (In this video I used the term "Dashboard" incorrectly). 1) Report = Power BI File Created with Desktop that contains the Tabs (Pages), Data Sets and Data Model. 2) Each Report is connected to One Data Set. 3) Tab in Power BI File = a Page a set of visuals. 4) Dashboard = a place to pin visuals in Power BI Service website. A Dashboard can contain visuals from different Reports and Data Sets.

Hi Mike: in PowerBI How do we calculate cumulative balance for financial data like balance sheet Asset/Liability accounts. in essence the calculation is Asset 1 balance in march is Balance beginning of year + accumulated transactions during the year on same account number. Example: Account 1211 Accumulated balance in July = balance as of 20xx/01/01 + All transactions booked on account 1211 up until end of July I couldn't solve this issue nor could i find solution online...is it possible for you to make video about it? it seems that many people has it, found in my search many questions but no concrete answer..

Mike, when creating a calendar using DAX you can add in Quarter by using Format just like you did for Month. Quarter = Format(dDate[Date], "Q") Another way to prevent hidden date tables from being created is to turn off that functionality. ExcelIsFun Hi Mike, I have a question for power BI that bothers me few days and I can’t find a solution for it.I have created the last year year to date (LY YTD) figures and year to date (YTD) figures from original sales data in power BI using measures. And I have also created three customer groups based on the LY YTD and YTD using measures. I would like to place the groups in power BI slicer so the other users can simply choose the group that they want to see and the sales report will show. But looks like we can’t place measures in slicer. I have tried the below methods but none of them work: 1, create columns instead of measure for LY YTD and YTD. However, it’s not working as they appeared to have dependency issue. 2, using SWITCH functions tried to link the measures with the sales report, still not working. The demonstration video that I looked at only shows the total figure, but I would like to have the list of all the customers that under the selected group. 3, I’ve tried the VAR logictest but the similar issue as method 2. Do you have any suggestions? I’m not quite sure whether I’m on the right track to solve my issue but each method is so close to my expected result... really really appreciate your advise! 😊
@excelisfun4 жыл бұрын
@@emmafeng55 I am not sure exactly without seeing a small replica of your larger model that can illustrate all the parameters in the problem. In general, if you want something in a slicer, you gotta put it is a table and put the table in the model with the correct relationship lines. If it was just customer group, then the customer attribute would go in Customer table. Maybe you need the LY YTD and YTD sales as amounts in column in customer table!?!?! If you can make a small model in Excel with your tables and customers and so on, amd give me an example of the final result, I am pretty sure I could figure it out... Can you do that?
@emmafeng554 жыл бұрын
@@excelisfun Hi Mike, yes i do tried to create the customer group in a new table and I'm not quite sure whether because my background linkage formula is incorrect so its not successfully link. If it's not too much trouble can I send you the small part of the data and you can have a look? May I have your email address? thanks a lot~~
@excelisfun4 жыл бұрын
@@emmafeng55 not a small part of the data. Send a complete parallel but much smaller model that shows your situation, state what your model is, what the goal is, and an example of what the end result is (maybe a few examples of what the correct answer would be). Maybe I can back my way into the logic that way. I get 100s of correspondences each day, so unless I can understand what your situation is, the goal and what the end result should be, in less that one minute, it is unlikely that I can help. excelisfun at gmail : )

Just a quick note: Power BI uses the term Dashboard in a very specific way. It is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports. What I find odd is you can only make use of it through the Power BI Service website. So you can't actually make Power BI Dashboards with the app. Not sure if that was confusing anybody else.
@excelisfun6 жыл бұрын
These terms are very important. I guess I made a mistake. I thought that the file was the "report", and each tab in the report was a Dashboard. Is that not correct? Is this more correct: 1) File = Report, 2) Tab = Tab, 3) Dashboard is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports in online BI Service website ?
@pabeader19416 жыл бұрын
A File created with Desktop = Report and Dataset A tab in a Report = Page A Dashboard is a place to pin visuals... Also, they make a point of noting that each Report(collection of Pages) is connected to one Dataset. That's where a Dashboard is a bit more flexible in that it's visuals can come from many different Datasets.

One comment: You are calling your reports "dashboards", but it may be wise to call them "Reports" because "Reports" and "Dashboards" are distinctively different things in Power BI Service. It took me a long time to understand the difference at the start of my Power BI learning journey, and I thought it would be important to establish the terminologies especially if the audience tends to be at a beginning proficiency. Btw, MSPTA has been an awesome series, Mike! I always recommend your channel for those who want to teach Excel to themselves, and now I can do the same for Power BI.

I'm with you, I find the formatting a bit confusing when you first come across it. I'm used to it now but still type my own stuff in a line but try to format if posting a question.

I greatly appreciate your Power BI insructional video and have learned so much compared to other Power BI videos. I took note step by step and found that the Ave Daily Gross Profit measure was not covered in the Power Query editor fTransactions field and was not available when you started creating the Dashboard. So I created the DAX forumla looking at the 016-MSPTDA-Excel file for Ave Daily Gross Profit as shown below. Ave Daily Gross Profit = AVERAGEX( dDate,[Total Gross Profit] ) measure in Power Query but the Total COGS $267,510.50 had different numbers than what is shown in the video when adding it to the values field in the Dashboard. Is the excel fact sheet source data using slightly different numbers? Please address this!

I thank you very much for all the shared classes. very very appreciated. in the homework instruction you suggest to calculate "Rolling 12-month Average for Transactional Sales". Actually, the results in the finished file calculate, in the "Rolling 12-month Average for Average Daily Sales". I hope could be useful
@jacquesmeyer70276 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike. You've left a measure out around 53:02. You've dragged the Ave Daily Gross Profit into the Value field, but in previous steps you did not show how you've calculate it.
@baruchschwartz8195 жыл бұрын
Yes he forgot to throw that in. You will note that in the screen shot before, ave daily gross profit measure is not yet created, and then it somehow appears. This in no way diminishes the magnitude of the greatness of this video. I think that the formula Mike would use is Ave Daily Gross Profit = averagex(ddate,[Total Gross Profit])
