Recently, this trusty old pressure washer stopped pumping water while using it. Engine still ran, but no pressurized water. We'll start the repair by looking at the problem, which we quickly realize is severe damage to the pump, and then decide to install a newer style of water pump to make it work.
Dates of filming: October 8th, 2018 (Disassembly and Pump Install)
October 17th, 2018 (New Washer Hose)
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 Keep Dreaming - Topher Mohr and Alex Elena
4:39 Hilltop - Dan Lebowitz
8:51 Cue - Silent Partner

Dad got this exact one for a hundred, except that the only original thing on it is the frame. When I tried pulling the cord, I didn't feel the compression, it was the same all the way through, after some adjustments, it started on the second pull at 28°f or like -2°c, so below freezing. When I looked at the engine, it was blue, was mostly constructed of metal, had JD on it, and the honda sticker was placed on top of sticker residue. The pump didn't work. After some searching I found it on the internet; the hose, gun, pump, engine, and wheels were different. I wasn't joking when I said the frame is the only original part. I'll edit this and post the engine brand and specs. It's a Jiangsu Jiangdong corporation model JF120 127CC 4 hp engine.

that surging the motor is doing, there is this tiny pin hole in the carb thats slightly plugged, its about 0.013 pin hole size. Theres a lil plug under the pilot jet to access it, makes all the difference when p.washing =)

Thanks for that tip! I have only really used it for odd jobs, and never messed with the engine or carb other than what was mentioned in this video. I'm sure it could run a bit better than it does, if it is just a gunked up carb passage it shouldn't be a big deal to sort it out

Now you'll have to pressure wash the rest of the house! I had to do the same with a Ridgid Washer. I'd have trashed the whole thing, but discovered the engine is an Isuzu, and is close in reliability to a Honda. That pushed me towards replacing the pump. I had no idea how many variations of a replacement pump there were, and I looked at over 20 different versions before I found what I was looking for. Anyway, I cleaned up the washer, changed the engine oil, and the washer is good for another few years, I hope.

The black hose underneath is an accumulator. These strap pumps don't run a typical unloader system, and so that hose is to capacitate the excess pressure when you release the wand. If that wasn't there, the sudden spike in pressure would be detrimental to the porcelain pistons, and since fluids don't compress, it would end up destroying things prematurely. I've thrown away dozens of those strap pumps, retro-fitting them to (most typically) a 3 piston axial wobbler pump (exactly like the himore you've fitted). Still not as good as a crank-opperated pump, but a much more economical option. The pistons seizing in their bores and fracturing is a common failure, as well as the straps breaking. Even when those pumps work correctly, they're sub-par. Their flow is "pulsy", causing the gun to sort of vibrate in your hand, causing fatigue, and makes your hands go numb after prolonged use. For the home-gamer, it's usually a non-issue. You're not washing down 10 cars a day with it, to care. The yellow plug is for shipping. Because the pumps come pre-filled with oil, the cap is to prevent the oil from leaking out, should the box be place wrong-side-up. It'll probably work itself loose as the pump oil heats up the air inside the pump, and increases pressure. Highly doubt it'll cause an issue while running. What would be concerning, is if you were to leave the plug in as it cools. The resulting vacuum from the shrinkage of air could cause the plug to seat itself, and seal off the pump body, while still cooling. This could cause the pump to start pulling water passed the packing seals over time, and into your pump oil, and cause pre-mature failure of your pump assembly due to oil frothing from the contaminated oil. Basically, take the plug out, it's packaging.

UPDATE:1 year and still cranks within the first 2-3 pulls. Probably will buy another when this one finally does bite the dust kzbin.infoUgkx43QMbQqu67IZadu9ou8Sg1BdrunMRNqX . No issues at all. Very happy with it.UPDATE: After 6 months of use and over 70 uses I would still highly recommend this pressure washer. It does vibrate a decent amount but never had it “walk” like others have mentioned. No oil leaks, still seems to run like the day I bought it. Still cranks within 2-3 pulls every time. Very happy with my purchase!Have used it about a dozen times now. Plenty of power, cranks up on 1-2 pulls every time. My only complaint would be I wish it was a little taller to make it easier to walk with it (hits my ankles a lot) and that the two hose connections were a little further apart but it hasn’t caused me any issues. Seems to run a good 1-1/2-2 hrs on a full tank, overall a well built machine and definitely worth the money in my opinion.

I knew it would be cake for you lol. You can spray with the gun tip much closer on harder surfaces or bare metal. 2-6" is where we train our crews to keep the tip. You'll get wet, aim your ricochet... Tone down psi at the "unloader" for wood or painted surfaces. Spray too far away and you lose a lot of the psi goodness the Honda is pushing. Try a Turbo zero tip matching the gpm of the unit, amazing results... Detergent injectors are subjective. Get a hand pump sprayer for car soap and casually washing stuff. Soap at 3000psi makes an unnecessary mess if you're not careful. Park the machine so it doesn't get too wet and Pull the tiny yellow oil valve cap plug when using. The pumphead needs to vent at full rpm bc temperature changes and expansion of fluids and gases inside. Replace plug when storing or turning unit on its side, Or use a solid cap to retain pump oil. You can use SAE30 NONdetergent as pump oil, and Detergent added SAE30 for motor. Do not reverse the two. Change both oils often and the washer is alive for a long time. Beer after dinner made me type a little lazy. I apologize for the grammar. Nice repair!

@ffjsb
@ffjsb 2 жыл бұрын
Won't START, or won't turn at all like it's seized??? If you can pull the rope and the engine spins, drain the old fuel, and use the 4 cycle fuel that comes in the prepackaged can. Pull out the spark plug, clean it if needed. If it's only 2 years old or so, it should still be good. You can get a gauge to measure the gap of the igniter on the end too. Sometimes I'll cheat and use just a spritz of starting fluid to help an engine that's sat with old fuel started again. You may also be able to unscrew the carburetor bowl off and clean it if needed depending on the type of engine. Using the canned fuel helps engines from getting gummed up from old fuel. If you can't turn the engine and it feels like it's locked up, you have major problems. Find a friend that's handy, and invite him over for beers...

Whenever I receive a power washer to repair, the pumps are always the first to go bad. Usually the engines work perfectly fine. Most customers don't want to pay to put a new pump on so they just end up giving it to me, since they would normally throw them away. If I find a pressure washer with a blown engine, I would simply swap parts and use the blown engines for parts. I wouldn't buy one new unless the customer requests it. Because in some cases buying a new power washer would cost less than the new pump and the cost of installation. Most of the time, the pump is removed and scrapped and the working engine would be saved to be used for something else. Just about every residential pressure washer built nowadays is cheap Chinese garbage with Chinese Honda clones that have problems all the time. Only the prosumer and commercial units with good pumps will last for a long time, but it comes with a heavy price tag.

Hi! Unfortunately I got the pump off of eBay and the listing isn't up anymore, but I would definitely check there with the part number given in the video. You can also pretty much just go by the product pictures and find one that looks identical since they go by different names. Same goes for the replacement hose, eBay. I will say that it didn't care for the 5/16" hose and to go with a 3/8" because I couldn't get the siphon feed to work reliably with the 5/16". Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

The older stuff is better built... I have a 95 Craftsman track drive snowblower I bought for 50 dollars 7 years ago... the axle bushings were shot and the previous owner put water pipe as a bearing on one side, so it wallowed out the hole... so I bought a 1/2" steel bar and some pillow block bearings, calculated the new hole placements for the drive gear and the track drives and slapped it together... and replaced all the bronze bushings in the track drives and added ball bearings instead of bushings in the upper drive train. Works like a champ... I needed to add sheet metal wings on the auger housing because the tracks are now 3/4" wider than the auger housing. Before, the outside tracks were in line with the housing, so without the wings, it would climb up on the snow. Was about 75 dollars in parts total... works better than new. It has the original auger housing (not rusted through), scraper bar and motor, I also added an electric start I scavenged off a blown up motor... And I had to make a new carb cover (out of a car aluminum heat shield) and muffler (out of sheet metal from a rusted out push mower deck), they rusted off. I have an 8 year old Troy Bilt I use at my apartments and my auger housing is rusting through and the scraper bar had to be replaced already... They don't build things to last anymore... I just scored the exact same washer for free... Haven't dug into it yet... Pump is leaking like a sieve...

@Fuzzy Dice Projeects I've just discovered your channel and I'm now on a watching spree. I grew up around Firebird's and 'IROC Z's', so they remind me of my childhood and teenage years. I would have jumped at your new project immediately! Let me know if you get tired of it. As a coincidence, my Honda powered, consumer grade power washer started backfiring and dying towards the end of last summer. A small engine repair shop told me the water pressure pump was seizing and the unit was trash. He wouldn't even take it for free, or repair it. It's only less than a few years old and has been used maybe a half-dozen times. Does this sound right? If so, this looks like a project I could tackle relatively easily. Could you please provide a source and/or some details for the new water pressure pump? Hopefully the new one will last significantly longer. Thanks!

Glad you have been enjoying our videos! If your pressure washer isn't particularly old, it's likely it already has an axial pump and the swap should be even easier and a crank key should already be present. If it has a cover over the pump, take it off and see if it looks like (or very similar to) the one I installed here. Search "Pressure Washer Pump Honda GC160 Engine 7/8" Shaft" on eBay to find the one I ordered. The product page has some good details (seller: eprdistribution). I believe all of the Honda pressure washers use a 7/8" shaft but I could be wrong. Also measure the mounting bolts and compare to the specs on the eBay page.

I suggest you take the pump off the motor and run it by hand or with a drill and confirm the shop's diagnosis. I've not been around much equipment that "kinda" seizes up...

It's sitting at Sean's house, he has a short attention span and bought the Volvo expecting to drive that for a while. Of course, it broke immediately, and now he plans to put money into that before really working on the Datsun. Next thing the Datsun is getting is an actual gas tank, as the fuel cell is leaky and the fuel pump is loud and he just wants a fuel tank back under it.

Has anyone noticed that the new pump gets super hot? I had emailed the company and the suggested replacing the lubricating oil , which turns out was two ounces and not the full 4.5 ounces. I replaced the oil and it still gets super hot. Waiting to hear back from the company....

I can't believe a Honda would ever lose pressure for anything in any way. Hmmm, weird. Seems like a lot of work. Maybe next time you should just use some blue devil headgasket sealer, that shit fixes everything with no negative consequences whatsoever! 🙃

It was a piece of mild steel I used, should be about as soft as steel comes, but I doubt this little engine would be able to shear it anyway. If it somehow did, then it would probably be a catastrophic failure anyway
