The story is basically about a man who abandoned his wife and child in order to pursue a life of ambition in the capital. He scored high in the civil service exams, landed an important job, and then lied about being married so he could marry the emperor’s daughter. When his real wife and child came looking for him, he tried to have them killed in secret, but they escaped and went to the guy in the clip (Judge Bao) for help. The famous clip is of Judge Bao reading the court the accusation against the man who abandoned his family and then tried to murder them. He was found guilty, but the imperial bureaucracy shielded him from the death sentence, and said that the court should let him go with basically no consequences. Judge Bao was so enraged by this that he ignored the emperor’s order and executed the man anyway, even though he himself could have been killed for doing so.
