I used to spend all my time here as a kid led soldiers led horses and cows and led toy guns I used to collect the bottles and sell them to landlords of pubs who had them on shelves around the pub I found cups whole with princess diana and charles on it was great would love to go back I didnt really know what I was finding back then but now I'd know what things were is a verry old landfill site

Sadly the cliff face is being capped at the moment; a layer of huge rocks to prevent the river carving out more.
@stevethemudlarker2 ай бұрын
it is rather amazing what you can find thanks mate .

it is a shame tho, but has to be done to prevent anymore collapse, plus also saving some wild life at the same time.

How did the council ruin it.
@catherinewilliams38502 ай бұрын
@@denisesocha6279 I think Steve said they cleared it all away.
@tom_burleigh2 ай бұрын
@@catherinewilliams3850 Not quite, they're trying to prevent future collapse by building a revetment; a slope of big rocks effectively capping it, kinda like sea defences. That's unfortunate for us mudlarks, but very good for the wildlife and environment.
@catherinewilliams38502 ай бұрын
@@tom_burleigh Ahh I see, I often wonder, why had dumps right by rivers, it seems a strange place to have them.
@tom_burleigh2 ай бұрын
@@catherinewilliams3850 It's because they were put where the land wasn't usable for other purposes; namely housing, commerce, industry, or farming; so swampy land or old quarries, or very steep hillsides. I think this site, sitting downstream of the confluence of two rivers would naturally have been a swampy sort of flood plain area. Indeed, part of the riverside only a hundred meters up from the cliff is still very much like that. In hindsight it was a bit of a stupid place to put a dumpsite, right next to a meandering, winding river; but the site was started in the 1840's a fair way away from the river, and kinda spread and spread and grew huge as the population grew. Thankfully nowerdays, landfill sites aren't allowed to be near rivers, and a lot more thought is put into how to prevent the toxins getting into the water table.

Are you across from the golf course? Golf course at the other side of the river
@tom_burleigh2 ай бұрын
No, it's a National trust paddock attached to East Riddlesdon hall directly accross the river, the golf course is about 1 and a half miles upstream.
@stevethemudlarker2 ай бұрын
ive no idea where the golf course is Richard, it was my first time here would love to go back, but as the winter comes brings the high water levels i await the return of summer lol. or hire a boat for the river and don my waders .

Steve I personally went on toms page and thanked him for taking you to that wonderful place to mudlark at. I feel bad for you that nobody else has invited You out with them even to the themes and that isn't right. They bring other people along as guest but not you. It makes me mad and sad You seem like such a decent guy. I don't get it. Question that deco bottle you found but you didn't take the other matching one. Would you be willing To sell the one you found. I collect art deco perfume bottles and art deco skyscraper looking Bottles. Please let me know. I really hope Tom Let's you go back there that place. How come he didn't want to be shown on his and other Videos he can't be that Bad looking he doesn't want the show him self. Well take care and be safe and happy larking.

I prefer to remain off camera, simply because I don't want any fame. I used to write books, (and may do again sometime), and one of the most uncomfortable experiences I ever had was someone gushing enthusiasm and praise at me because of something I'd written... for 10 excrutiating minutes, there was no escape. I'm incredibly introverted and find such things very draining. I'm not saying the same thing will happen with Mudlarking videos; most of the people I've met out mudlarking who've recognised me were cool people... but I decided at the start to remain off camera and I'm still happy passing unrecognised most of the places I go.

I agree, Tom. You are much too nice of a person to be rude to anyone and ignore their questions or requests. You would not have the time to enjoy doing what you went out for and truly love , mudlarking , enjoying nature, taking your walks, getting some exercise, and just having some solitude. You give us much with your videos and soothing voice and music. Occasionally, you give us a little peek into your private life, but that's not why we watch your videos. Thank you for answering their question. Keep on mudlarking ! 😊

It's not that dangerous we used to jump from the top and work our way down 😅😂
@tom_burleigh2 ай бұрын
It's more the potential danger that needs be shown in a video; I could be far more reckless in my videos and still quite safe, but if I showed reckless behaviour and someone copied me, who wasn't as agile as me, they could be seriously injured and it would at least partially be my fault. A lot of people try to copy what they see in videos.

its all just common sense when your around an area like this, but agree with tom, thanks guys.
