Lots of questions about where I got the moss poles. If you're in the UK I've added a link to the description! I don't know specific shops that sell them outside of the UK but I know they are available so I'll keep an eye out and add any links I find to the description too! X

I’m a private collector in US and got my hands on a bunch of these. I can share them with folks who are interested. 😊 btw they are incredible and I’ve turned them into self watering ones that are super low maintenance!

Hi James! Glad to have a new video from you! I’ve been rewatching all of your older videos:) Do you know if I can get some of those plastic moss poles in the states, and if so, would you be so kind as to post a link or comment as to where I can order them from? Your plants are absolutely incredible; you had me at variegated Billie

That mint monstera towards the end looks unreal. It's so lush - do you have any tips on how to encourage monsteras to bush out? I heard they respond to notching and would love to hear if you've ever had experience with that

When are you going to have a new video?
@danielnewald47582 жыл бұрын
Hey, i really enjoy your content. Great stuff. I also do have a question, perhaps you know something about this. Were the cultivars Monstera andersonii "Archipelago", Monstera deliciosa "White Monster" and Philodendron pedatumxsquamiferum "Florida Ghost" artificaially created? I couldn't find any information on that and i find it suspicious that all 3 seem to have a similar mutation. At lest they appear similar to me. Cheers, DN
@emmap32832 жыл бұрын
Hey! Im not James but I am a plant physiology and genetics student so I can offer some insight. You’re totally right that all three look similar, and thats because all three have similar mutations causing chlorophyll production in the leaves to be unstable and/or delayed. In the white monster and adasonii archipeliago, The transcription or reading of a gene essential for chorophyll production is mutated (likely at the connection site) causing chances to be much lower for the TRNA to latch and be able to print off the instructions to make chlorophyll. once some is printed, it lasts for quite a long time in the leaf which causes that delaying greening up you see as the leaves age. florida ghost is the same concept, but has an additional mutation that coils and stores the gene away in high light additionally lowering chances of transcription. Its extremely rare for a mutation to happen the exact same way twice, but very common for two similar mutations to have similar effects as you've noticed. the more types of mutation can cause an effect( ex green on green var, theres a million mutations that can do the same thing in slightly different ways) the more common it will be. Hope that helps!
@danielnewald47582 жыл бұрын
@@emmap3283 Thank you for the concise reply Emma! If it is indeed a mutation interfereing with an existing metabolism, it makes a lot of sense that even different mutations could cause a similar result. Is there perhaps a forum for these kinds of discussions? I am usually not a fan of hybrids or variegated plants but these 3 fascinate me, as do the mechanics behind it.
@emmap32832 жыл бұрын
@@danielnewald4758 unfortunately I havent found any that discuss common houseplants at scientific depth. Its very difficult to fully understand without pretty extensive education in genetics, and most people who are educated in it aren’t interested in mutated aroids in cultivation. Everything I've been able to learn about the physiology behind these processes in aroids has been trial and error, crossing out what could and couldn’t be possible given their behaviour in relation to crop plants with similar features that have been sequenced, and comparing that to their base gene structures. the UBC botanical garden had a very active discussion Board in the 2000s but has since died out. If there is one around i hope to find it soon!
@danielnewald47582 жыл бұрын
@@emmap3283 I see, i joined that forum recently but it felt pretty barren apart from the moderators. Amazing that you managed to cross reference it with such detail at all. It can be quite taxing to read through some of the literature especially if you don't know were to start. I hope so too, thx again Emma & sorry James for getting a little off topic. XD
