Bloom & Gray - Flower Farm

Bloom & Gray - Flower Farm

Күн бұрын

Thank you for watching my latest video! My name is Sarah and I am a flower farmer in East Yorkshire, UK. I am in my 6th season of flower growing and I love sharing the highs and lows with you here on KZbin!
☕ If you get value from my videos then you can buy me a coffee to show your appreciation. I am currently saving up for a microscope to help me monitor soil health on the farm, and share that journey here on KZbin, all of my future coffee donations are going towards that fund. I'm appreciative of all of your support!

Some tips on what to grow near your tipi: Rudbeckia laciniata ‘Goldball’, 2 m high with floppy yellow flower balls, (I stake the one I greow). Rudbeckia fulgida ’Goldsturm’, 70 cm yellow with brown center. Another tall autumn flower is Heliopsis helianthoides ’Fire & Twister’. Nice dark leaves, and colourful flowers. You can go with dianthus barbatus, Green trick or Sweet white. I like to watch your videos!

Oh happiness rising because you upload a new exciting, motivating video. Me too I am a graduated biologist (specialised in phytopathology) and did a gardening apprenticeship first. As a biologist I worked in the fields of soil microbiology and vermicomposting. My main crop here in Germany is yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius). First I just had some ornamental plants in the driveway only and then more and more flowers came. People demanded more, it grew and now one of my customers is even doing an art exhibition with fotos of the blossoms.

I’d take those limelight hydrangeas and border your t-pee and the garden fence line. Add a little garden gate entrance into the garden., plant some clematis and climbing roses on it.., let the gardens lead your around.

Really enjoyed all the updates and the walk around. In relation to the anesthetics around your work shops space- I think it would be wonderful to have some annuals there to wow your guests. Maybe even offer a field walk through that area. Back the spot with the new limelights for a barrier to the main portion and in front grow quick crop successions. Maybe Procuts, Covent garden gyp, some grasses, saponaria etc. Love your channel!

We watch a lot of KZbin videos on drying flowers and we recently bought a book called Everlastings: How to Grow, Harvest and Create with Dried Flowers by Bex Partridge. It has practical information on drying techniques as well as some projects to make with your dried materials. Check with your local library and see what they have on the topic. Serena from You can't Eat the Grass did an experiment with the same flower dried two different ways. One was hanging to dry and the other was using silica gel. They both dried really well but the silica gel result retained more colour.

Sarah, at 19:25 you talk about pulling out and getting rid of some of the perennials by the teepee. I hope you would consider selling them locally to those who would be interested. Imagine the funds that could come from that and which you could reinvest in annuals in that spot (or your new microscope)! If I lived in the UK I’d most certainly come and buy some from you. Good luck with all of your amazing projects!

The hydrangea limelight propagate quite easily. Just cut a branch and insert into soil (I did not use rooting hormone). Also, their patent expired April 2022 so it’s okay to propagate.

Hi David, yes I have thought about this and I know I would enjoy keeping bees but I just don’t have the time to dedicate to it right now. Maybe in the future at some point! Or maybe I can get a bee keeper to come and put some hives on the farm and show me the ropes!

Could you cover the weed membrane with wood chips to improve the aesthetics? 🤔 So many good things happening on the flower farm!! ☀️
@bloomandgray
@bloomandgray 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I was thinking of taking up the black plastic (which is actually damp-proof membrane) and replacing with weed membrane and wood chips, but eventually the wood chips will break down and weeds may start to grow and it will be hard to seperate that from the membrane (I’ve done this before and when you want to change it, it becomes really difficult 😂)

Those plumes behind you! Did you grow them?! I bought myself a package of the ornamental pink pampas grass. I’m zone 4b., I have no clue if they will even produce plumes for me. They are zone 7 and state to start 12-14weeks early. Last frost is usually first week of June.. so I’m planning on starting them around Christmas indoors under lights, hopefully they will preform first year.🤞🏻I’d love, If you have any tips, I would appreciate the help.

Where is the link to the teepee ?
@TheEmbrio

Seems like your fields and soil biology might benefit from hedges, as wind block, as woody material source, as an ecosystem builder. Autumn is the right time to stick cuttings in, see what grows, and multiply any shrubs and hedge trees you might have close by. In a few years, that hedge will be a source of carbon and miscellium building material !
@bloomandgray
@bloomandgray Жыл бұрын
I planted lots of hedging this year, hopefully it will take well and start providing benefits to the farm soon!
