Awesome! Great shot of the air table at work also! I use Shaffer's products as well, good stuff, I was told a long time ago they had a contract with the government for years and years.

I had to do a total of 4 (2 each) of those helicoils on my C8AE heads. Way easier to do with heads off the vehicle. No issues so far. Thanks for sharing.

I usually put a little red thread locker on inserts to keep them in place as I tighten the bolt. Otherwise, the insert may keep turning and come out the bottom.

@kenchilton if the bolt isn't getting installed crooked it doesn't have any reason to bind up on the threads and turn the insert out. I don't use thread locker very often on the OD of the inserts because a little bit of it can squeeze through to the inside threads. Everyone does it differently. I have had good success doing it this way. 🤷♂️

I don't think the thread locker would hold on exhaust anyway. 271 releases at about 400F. I don't know if it bonds again after cooling. Ive never tested that. I just did an fe head and 440 Chrysler yesterday. The 440 had a broken stud, had to drill it out and they all go into the water jacket. Haven't decided exactly how I will fix that one yet. @RoederPerformance

Yes great information and video but if you could on a video please show us a little more about the air ride bed plate I have used mill machines before but never heard of an air bed that was very intriguing to me

Sometimes it's easier to install the next size larger bolt...
@RoederPerformance4 күн бұрын
@@Faolan161 why would I do that when I have easy access and the tools to fix it?
@Faolan1614 күн бұрын
@RoederPerformance because a thread insert is not a fix much of the time, it's a bandaid... especially when you leave out the loctite or can't use it due to excess heat...
@RoederPerformance3 күн бұрын
@@Faolan161 I guess we will just disagree. The thread insert is completely engaged into the OD threads and when you tighten the bolt, that now turns in nicely, it locks in. I don't disagree a thread in the parent material is always preferred but then you have odd sized bolts in some of the threads and if running iron manifolds the holes need to be enlarged. This just seems to be a much better alternative to me. It's not like it's a constantly removed and installed component.
@Faolan1613 күн бұрын
@RoederPerformance no worries. There's a difference between fixing and bandaging.... Now if you could positively lock the thread insert, then I'd agree with it being a fix. It's like using inserts for spark plug threads... When they come out with the plug, it's quite an inconvenience. Not that it happens all the time... but when it does, it's a headache, every time.

What brand taps do you buy? thanks
@RoederPerformanceКүн бұрын
@mannyfilmsinc no particular brand. The tap I used for the thread inserts came in the kitchen. Typically if it's not CHY-NA I will have decent success and life of taps.
