Bio: Wajahat S. Khan is an Emmy-nominated journalist and author reporting on Indo-Pacific security and focusing on the Af-Pak conflict. An Adjunct Professor at New York University’s Center of Global Affairs and non-resident Senior Fellow at Washington’s Atlantic Council, Khan is a graduate of the Columbia University School of Journalism and the University of Michigan, as well as Pakistan’s only Shorenstein Fellow for Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He has reported from 16 countries covering conflict, diplomacy, and media for digital, cable and network news. During the final years of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, Khan was bureau chief in Kabul and Islamabad for NBC News, and embedded with over a hundred NATO, Afghan, Indian and Pakistani military and paramilitary units as he covered South Asia for leading US, British, Indian, Japanese and Pakistani networks and publications since the beginning of the 2001 U.S. invasion of Afghanistan. Even karachiites like myself whose families came from India thought he was mad. LOL you weren’t alone in that assumption. But the guy makes sense. Muhajirs from India came with more political awareness perhaps and understood the struggle for freedom and were probably aghast with the stupidity and shortsightedness of the ruling elite once they arrived in Pakistan. Karachi still remains the most progressive city idealogically in Pakistan. Too bad that the most educated lot from India that came with high ideals left for North America in droves in the 90s. Right now from afar it appears the Pashtun / Pathan and muhajirs / Baloch will likely form the most natural alliances in Karachi given what little PPP and Punjabi elite has done for the “ city of lights “. Maybe we can have our Parsi , Hindu and Christian communities return to Karachi as well. Might be wishful thinking. Glad to hear this AH vocalize distaste for religiosity without mincing words.

I myself never knew AH perspective but his today podcast with WSK cleared my misconceptions and after seeing what happened with PTi and IK AH sounded rational to me and what mqm did. Yes indeed Karachiites Mahajir knew from the 70s they are not welcomed and accepted in Pakistani system so they started to migrate to US Canada UK etc in bunch and it snowballed in later years. The immigration drive has always been much higher from Karachi then rest of Pakistan because of the injustice Mahajir and Karachi always faced.

This interview totally changed my perspective about Altaf Hussain. I am a Punjabi Pathan. I used to hate Altaf Hussain and his MQM and used to think that he was a traitor ever since i was born, I am 33 now by the way. But after watching this interview I am starting to question my own existence and ideologies that i used to base my life on. How can Altaf Hussain be like this as presented in this interview. i am still having difficulty accepting this. I am conflicted with myself right now. I don't know what to believe in anymore.

I'm 1984 born. First time listening to altaf hussain and it was pure enlightenment for me. He seems to be an educated and well versed with Pakistani system and also victim of it. Thank you wajahat for this. It has further fortified my hatred and dislike towards that particular group of army that has always negatively intervened in politics of Pakistan.

There's no particular group which interferes in the politics. Army is a well developed institute with a very clear agenda of keeping the democracy in Pakistan weak and whoever represents them has been trained and tried in doing so. Anyone who is not fit to do so won't make it far in the ranks.

I am an Urdu speaking and I never thought in my life I would be listening to Altaf Hussain. I always believed in Army's version of Altaf being a traitor. Army's recent role in politics brought me here to listen to him and believe him to some extent though not fully. He could do too much for under previliged but his ways were nasty. And that is the reason we are still in the same state.

What I liked of Altaf Bhai: 1. One time he said to boys of Karachi that no more hooting and respect the girls. (Boys stopped hooting girls and started respecting girls) 2. One day he said let's keep Karachi clean. (All the people of Karachi started cleaning Karachi, even highly educated people came out with broom and cleaned entire Karachi. ). I am proud of my dear Altaf Bhai.

I'm a muhajir from Karachi i was a fan boy of altaf bhai grew up in North nazimabad under the influence of mqm but the Hindustan times speech and that 22 august speech of altaf bhai and then interviews with Indian media where he said "sare jaha se acha Hindustan humara" really hurt me i believe the division of India in 1947 was not a conspiracy but a true struggle division of blood yes it was but only Muslims blood I believe altaf bhai shouldve never said anything bad to the country he should've directly said it to the army like army murdabad on 22 august And i feel altaf bhai should've defended Pakistan on Indian media like gen mushraf and imran Khan did yes he should've shown his grievances for the army but should've defended Pakistan when indian media was saying against Pakistan
