Diddy Kong Racing was one of my favorite N64 games, and David Wise's amazing soundtrack made all the difference. Every time I hear "Ancient Lake" playing, I suddenly feel 8 years old again playing the game for the first time.

This interview is SOOO Good, obviously because David Wise is in it, but also largely because the interviewers have done their research! Props to you interviewers for your research, knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm/appreciation for the DKC soundtrack! :)

Ahhh, David Wise. What a guy. It's so cool to hear him talk so casually about all the video game music that formed the magic of my childhood. That was so cool, I'm dedicating today to Rare games. I need to go play some DKC now.

The greatest synthesist of game music! So cool to hear him talk about in DKC he repeated short WAV clips to basically make his own oscillators/samples. The compositions are deeper and more organic than anything else on SNES, with the same physical limitations.

it's weird listening to this man for the first time, after his music has become such a part of me and made me who I am. if I could pick any game to play for the rest of my life it would be dkc 1 or 2. I've never played games that could give me such vibrant and vivid feelings. every single time I go back I have the same incredible atmospheric experience.

It's fascinating David Wise starts with the rhythm of the piece rather than melody; I wonder if it's a common technique for video game composing. I heard Koji Kondo recomposed the Super Mario Bros theme over and over until it perfectly fit the rhythm of Mario's movement.

I do feel, through his voice and delivery that he doesn't know how to react to the hype that his music created, and that he does not realize that he shaped peoples childhoods! DKC2 was my all time favorite game, but even when I was a child it was the music that really drew me to it.

+Dr. Dhoom lol.. OK, you can't deny that people in the late 80s and 90s that were in the game industry ever saw this coming, that's all I'm saying, but continue to be snarky about it, I suppose.

+phuse99 You're both right. He surely is humble. And doesn't think of himself as a brilliant composer. But at this point, he does know that there are many people around the world that have a special connection to his music. He probably never dreamed of that while making DKC. In my experience, many of the best composers are humble, and don't think of themselves as brilliant. :)

Awesome interview, man. This is the only audio interview I have ever heard with the genius himself and I'm glad it was done by an interviewer who knows his stuff. As I'm sure you know by now, all the hype over him composing for DKCTF was totally warranted. He absolutely nailed it again. I bought a sweet sound bar specifically to play this game and blast his new tunes and they sound amazing.

A perfect example of how computational limitations actually gave more character to games. The lack of power in the SNES was one of the factors that gave DKC music its charm! Kind of like how Mario's character design was developed and built around the graphical limitations of the console the original game ("Donkey Kong" in 1981) ran on...

Well after listening to the interview, I do respect this guy even more. I did not realize HOW MUCH he was limitated by the hardware at the time, and still he did such an incredible work ... I mean, even apart from the melodies, only the sounds/instruments themselves, they had this high level of quality and clarity ! I can't imagine how far could Mr Wise go with nowadays' DAWs, whose are almost limitless while very handy, considering how magical his work already was with old and limitated hardware. This also felt incredible, to learn that every piece of the DKC games soundtrack just comes from him having a look at the graphics of the game ! Seriously just think of that, only the design of the levels was there at the time, no music, he had to compose it from zero with just some pixels and maybe kind of a "theme" but that's all. And out of just that, he composed songs like Aquatic Ambiance, Stickerbrush Symphony, Mining Melacholy, etc. I mean, EVERY song is just ALWAYS really well adapted to the specific atmosphere/gameplay of each level, and there was no one behind him going like "hey here's a lava level, so go with this rythm, and that bank of sounds, and that kind of melody" he did not have a workline or anything of this kind. He just had his mind. And that restrained workspace. AND STILL, he created this totally UNIQUE soundtrack that earns such a special place in our hearts. Finally, it almost feels weird how he sounds like completely unaware, of how strongly his music affected some people out there. If that's just due to him being humble, well then he's the most humble of all humble men, because through his words I almost hear something like "nah, what I did was not so big and impressive" but honestly it totally was. Would he agree or not, but I can tell without a single bit of doubt: David Wise is a brilliant, kind-hearted and very talented artist. May he never be famous or whatever, I sincerely hope his music will keep existing through time, just as long as it's possible, as for such an humble being he left such a deep mark in my very heart. And I know I'm not the only one. I hope this does not sound exaggerated, this is sincerely how I feel toward this guy's work. THANKS A LOT for this interview guys ! same words as marco matheus, interesting questions and everything, it's some really good stuff right there, and you are the ones who did that, not somebody else. Lots of respect for that.

A great video. Loved the discussion. I've never had a chance to hear Mr. Wise speak before and it was nice to hear a lot of my reasons for loving his music (and DKC 2 in particularly) validated by your similar opinions. And, frankly, I've been looking for insight into the development of DCT: TF's soundtrack and the details of his collaboration with Yamamoto-san, so this is really exactly what I've been looking for.
