I lived in the heart of lahaina for years and have family and friends who have lost loved ones and all of their material possessions and some who have taken their lives because they lost their child to the fires. This is not pono on the behalf of the law enforcement and government officials who did not warn or notify residents of the fire and blocked off access to retreat. The government is doing nothing for the people!!! Thank goodness for the local people on the island helping one another in this time of need and the many donations that are given and appreciated from all the beautiful people around the world who choose to help these people they have never met in their lives to give them support and live in this time of unbearable tragedy. I had a family friend who came to stay with us who is a single mother who lost everything in the fire and hearing her cry and break down about what unfolded is truly heartbreaking. Please everyone if you can give anything to help our fellow people please help, anything helps and is greatly appreciated and mahalo to all of you beautiful brothers and sisters for all of your help for the support and help of all our loved ones in this time of need.

As a resident of Kona for over 30 years, I have never seen such carnage. In 1992 I was here for hurricane Iniki. I thought the devastation was horrible in Kauai! This is different because there was very little warning ! Why?!? I do not know, and the death rate is going to increase because according to some things I’ve been reading their thousands of people missing. I think 17,000 people live in the town of Lahaina. People who live in Hawaii and have extra room, please open your home up as I have. If you want to help donate to local community groups. If you know the history of Hawaii, you would understand why this happened? I’ll explain it again. The sugarcane industry destroyed many ecosystems throughout the islands. Maui last sugarcane mill/ crops finally closed a few years back. However, the land was never cleared. Lots of dried vegetation was lying around instead of being cleared. Both Maui and Hawaii experienced 80 mph hurricane gust winds. This caused HELCO utility poles fall on this extremely dry vegetation. When these hot utility poles hit the ground, it set the vegetation on fire. HELCO could be negligent as the county and state government for not clearing out that dried vegetation… so stop spreading conspiracies… especially if you don’t live here.

This reporter, regardless of her living in Maui previously, it is Stunning how often she Smiles, she is seemingly Unaffected in her facial expressions. We think or expect the government to help us, the ones with the resources (our taxes) and supposed knowledge but this will demonstrate that it's we the people who really step in and step up. This is a glimpse of what is to come in the future. This is why community, organization and knowledge sharing is so important. The government gives the illusion of helping but it's the people who make the biggest difference. Hawai'i is in my thoughts and in my heart. We cannot give our power away. We have to come together and create the world we want and deserve.

It was a wild fire due to high winds. We literally saw the high winds in the video of people hiding in the water. This wasn't some attack on Hawaii. The high winds most likely brought down power lines, causing a fire and the high winds caused it to spread all over.
