Saw a funny interview a few years ago where Deschamps said that they were all looking at Barthez after it went in asking why he didn't save it. It was only when they saw the replay that they realised just how special a shot it was.

I would say Roberto Carlos is the best free kick taker of all time. That goal he scored from a corner kick where he made the ball bend twice in different directions was insane. I have never seen anything like that before or ever since.

For best freekick taker I'm surprised he didn't mention fellow Brazilian international Juninho (Olympique Lyonnais player not the middlesborough player). They played together for Brazil. In france we used to say if you foul any lyon player anywhere in your own half it was like giving a penalty away with Juninho taking them lol. Scored 75 goals for Lyon 44 were freekicks !!!

Saying, as a former Real Madrid player (and a Brazilian), that Beckham was "the best free kick taker of all time" over the factual best free kick taker in history, the (yet again, Brazilian) Juninho Pernambucano, is like saying that Messi or Ronaldinho were the best free kick takers of all football players, just because they were your team mates at your former club, LMAO. This video must be from a promotional event for Real Madrid, cause that's the only way one can explain Roberto Carlos' omission of fellow Brazilian Juninho. That, or the fact that they didn't really like each other, him and Juninho (envy over who's the best at free kicks in Brazil, maybe?)...

+DFC That's the thing: it most likely isn't his opinion (hard to believe a Brazilian would choose an English man over a legend of set pieces in his own country) - but the "opinion" of his club, or sponsors interested in having certain names included in this interview. That alone makes this interview useless. P.S. Just found out - I was right: he was interviewed at the Heineken Ibiza Final 2015. Heineken are a partner of the UEFA Champions League. So yeah, it was at a promotional event, and clearly the sponsors were interested in having former RM players with a great charisma (and Beckham was one of them) included in the "opinion" of Roberto Carlos. Young people like you must learn to make the difference between an actual opinion of a footballer and the "opinions" that are part of a contract with a sponsor associated with certain clubs or competitions.

Best LB ever anyone who says Maldini needs to be shot. Maldini was a great defender and better than Carlos defensively but Carlos modernised what it is to be a fullback. Great going forward and almost as good defensively. I think he picked Beckham because he played with him otherwise Juninho or Pirlo would have been his choice. In my opinion Payet is in with a great shout he hardly misses.

I liked RC, but I don't think he modernised the position at all. It's just the way the position has been played in Brazil for a while (maybe since Zagallo in 1958)... Branco and Leonardo did the same thing before RC in the 80s and 90s. Leonardo was so skill-full that he was turned into a midfield when he played in Europe (same happened to Ze Roberto), but he always played left fullback for the national team. But I agree that Roberto Carlos was one of the best.

I've always been able to curl the ball like Roberto. It's just something that came naturally to me. Sadly, I never even played for a proper team, because I didn't really play football until I was 11, so I was always playing catch up to other boys my age.
