Derrick Ryan Dearman (36) is scheduled to be executed in Alabama on October 17, 2024. Dearman was sentenced to death for the mass murder of five people in a home while they were sleeping, including one woman who was pregnant. The murders occurred in Citronelle, Alabama.
VICTIMS: Shannon Melissa Randall (35), Joseph Adam Turner (26), Justin Kaleb Reed (23), Chelsea Marie Reed (22), Robert Lee Brown (26), and Kaleb & Chelsea's unborn child.

Alabama is on the other end of the spectrum from California. in CA, it is almost impossible to execute somebody, due to the appeals process, and in Alabama, it is almost impossible to win any appeal. There is a satisfactory median between the two. For context: California has only executed 13 people since the death Penalty was re-established in 1976, and none in almost 20 years. There are 650 people on death row in the state. There was a federal, and then a state moratorium on it, which have both since expired, but the Governor is not inclined to start them up again, for political reasons. Meanwhile, Alabama does not even guarantee legal representation in the appeals process. So, a death row prisoner there better hope a non-profit will take up his case, or give himself a crash course in the very complex law surrounding capital murder appeals.

In NY a "person" is a defined term. It's someone who has been born is and alive. Killing a pregnant person doesn't count the fetus. One time the trauma team induced labor and delivered to child during a crisis. The baby died shortly later, and the defendant was charged with that additional murder. The physician testified he wasn't familiar with these laws and his only motive was to save the child. The killer was convicted on the life with no chance of parole statute.
