EMBA programs are a little more tricky compared to regular full-time MBA, when it comes to their perceived value. The best way to find out is to check with your HR team if getting that qualification will give you a leg up in the race. Do the same with HR folks from the company you want to target as well. That'll give you an idea of whether the investment would be worth it.

For the Indian schools there was no statistic on the average package post mba - is it because of lack of data or due to high variation ? EMBA programs are typically marketed towards working professionals, many of whom are sponsored by their current companies. So it wouldn't work in the bschool's interest to show this degree as a career change tool, as it would conflict with their sponsors' interests.

Hi Sameer thanks for the video.In order to pursue an international MBA, you will have to leave your job in India. Are there eMBAs that are fulltime in that case and dont require you to be working part-time? eg: does INSEAD allow this for the GEMBA course? On the other hand, is being in your early 30s a hindrance for regular MBAs?

EMBA programs by design are part-time. We've worked with several candidates who're over 30 and aiming for full-time MBA. You'll find some stories on our blog. As long as you're familiar and comfortable with the risks/rewards, you can consider it. A full-time degree has better market value than an EMBA, specially for career changers.

You haven't shared the reason for quitting your job, without having an alternative in hand. MBA application process takes over a year, as you might know. Which means it wouldn't be a good idea to just wait for an MBA to turn the tide. Specially when you're unsure about what you want to use it for. Better to search for a job first, and get back into the corporate world. And then continue thinking about where you want to take your career, whether an MBA is really needed etc.

Her academic graph has been quite unusual, compared to what adcoms typically expect. In such a situation, and especially for matters related to eligibility, rather than relying on a 3rd party's opinion, it's best for her to check directly with some of her target universities. That way she'd be sure that her application isn't getting rejected on technical grounds.

Part-time/evening programs are typically positioned for working (and often sponsored) candidates. So bschools cannot aggressively promote their careers services as an added benefit to such students. The EMBA candidates we know who've managed career changes are those who've proactively managed to reach out to prospective companies. For the full-time Fellows programs, reach out directly and check with them directly, as OPT rules are also being reviewed along with their focus on H1B candidates. Best to get such updates directly from the schools rather than relying on third parties.

Regular MBA would have a bigger impact compared to EMBA. But the issue is that your age and experience will be on the higher side compared to the class average. Applicants with a similar experience level who work with us typically aim for these: www.mbacrystalball.com/blog/2018/05/14/sloan-fellows-program-review-mit-lbs-stanford/ You can check the official websites to see if any of your target programs offer a score waiver. Self-study works well for a lot of applicants, since it allows them to pace the prep at their own speed and personalise the prep materials based on their strengths and weaknesses. Many start off with the official guide and then include additional material based on their learning needs. You'll find several resources in our GMAT video description. The school's branding plays a more important role than whether MBA or EMBA, am I right? Not everyone is able to forgo their salaries, opportunity costs and pay a premium for a top MBA program. If it comes down to either a top 25 MBA program vs a top 5 EMBA program (due to costs) - What would be a better choice?
@MBACrystalBall
@MBACrystalBall 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you want to use the degree for. While the brand is important, the format of the program matters too if you're looking for a big career change. A top EMBA program can cost as much as (if not more than) a full-time MBA. What you save in an EMBA program is the opportunity cost.

@@MBACrystalBall I'm still not sure whether to stay in the same field or move towards a different one. I might want to go outside to try something different then reflect if its something that I like. If not, then try something else again. For e.g. in IB, Finance, Operations or Consulting Roles. Thus, I wanted to use the MBA/EMBA as a platform to discover what people in these roles do and have it easier to move around post graduate studies. When you mentioned format matters - How is full-time different from part-time? @@MBACrystalBall Okay - I didn't know that as I have already gotten offers from both the programs that I have applied for (i.e. MBA for no. 2 school and EMBA for no. 1 school based in Singapore). I had preferred the EMBA route as the opportunity costs from salaries is significant and the guys I network with are > senior managers with some experience in each of the fields that I had mentioned earlier. I guess not everyone knows what they want - At least I don't, so the self-discovery component/journey promised in each of these programs is what that attracted me to take up a MBA.

Brochures are marketing tools. Given the intense competition in the industry, most bschools tend to oversell what their programs can do. We see many full-time MBA grads from top schools also scratching their heads after completing the course, since they still don't know where they want to go. Which is why we suggest being clear about what a program can and cannot do for you, before you sign on the dotted line. Of course, if you've done your homework well, you will not have much to worry about.

@@MBACrystalBall Agree, it's a little late to ask. My GMAT score is 720. I did apply to other IIM B and C but not to any international program. I would say the primary reason for that was my plan to ultimately move back to India (short future). Also, going for an international program would have meant a debt that would need working internationally for next 4-5 years or at least till the time I'm able to pay back the loan. Your views on this?

@MBACrystalBall 4 жыл бұрын
Among the 3 (A/B/C) you've converted the best one. Good work there. But none of those 3 would give you an edge over someone who's completed a 2-year PGP from those IIMs (given the difference in selectivity between their two formats). Or for that matter others just like you've who've already got an international MBA. European MBA programs are more cost effective for mature (30+) students. Indian salaries have grown to a level where it's not to difficult to service an education loan on an INR salary, if you can get the right role. Of course, you're better aware of your personal priorities and constraints than anyone else. So take the call based on what you think is right.

Also, I find working currently highly fulfilling and fun. However, I am unsure about the MBA relevance in consulting industry. Since you enjoy the work, if you ever plan to shift tracks and get into the more elite consulting firms (where the pay would be significantly higher than what you're currently getting), then an MBA would be very helpful. For smaller companies, it may not matter as much.

That's a valid concern. Good that you're factoring it in. As a general approach, most candidates with your level of experience skip the 2-year programs and aim for 1-year full-time MBA. What you've found from your research is correct. All the good MBA programs will ask for experience and a good GMAT or GRE score. Bypassing them to get into a mediocre program won't be a good idea. Why are you not looking for a job first, considering the career gap that you already have?
