This concert was not his last, definitely. His last concert was Bruckner No.7 Symphony on April 23rd 1989 with the Vienna Philharmonic in Viennas Golden Hall. Why do I know exactly ? Because I played the principal horn in this last concert conducted by Herbert v. Karajan. I was called to play the first Wagner Tuba, but the principal horn became ill. So I took over, but had no time for the dress rehearsal, because I had to play a Mozartian horn concerto. I could not cancel that concerto. Even after a night drive of some 200 miles, the concert was wonderful, but ..... After the end was minute-long silence, then the first people in the audience started crying, the orchestra began crying, all we came to tears, Karajan cried as well. We all realized that there will be no repeat. The Maestro of the Maestros wrote me a wonderful letter, which I keep as a high inspiring treasure. Two months later we were waiting near the stage entrance of the famous Cuvilliers Theatre in Munich, half hour before the festival performance of "Capriccio" - Wolfgang Sawallisch conducting. He had not heard these very depressing news about von Karajans passing away. Sawallisch was really destroyed. He appeared before the curtain at the beginning, informing the audience about this great loss & dedicated the festive performance of Capriccio to the memory of the greatest conductor - he spoke under tears !

Thanks for sharing your remarkable story. In your experience, who were the best Bruckner conductors? I imagine Karajan was among them? Also, what is your opinion of the acoustic of the Musikverein? I know how wonderful it sounds as a listener, but what is it like as a performer?

I attended several concerts in October of 1982 at Carnegie Hall when Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic were in town. The usual noisey concert goers along with the sirens occasionally passing by on 57th Street in NYC were largely absent during their performance of the Mahler 9th. Such was the respect and admiration the audience had for the Maestro and the Berlin Philharmonic!

Karajan was in Salzburg at this time when he was in a very painful appearance, but the music he creates seems to be a natural thing that resembles a resignation that seems to be born naturally. It was probably Ozawa who recommended Jessye Norman to Karajan.

That long build up of tension and then this subito piano at 0:43...!! Karajan had an unparalleled sense for the big line. (Un)fun fact : around the same time, Jessye Norman recorded large excepts of "Tristan" with Masur. They were published only recently and should have remained in a drawer IMHO if it wasnt for her singing: Masur conducts the dryest, flattest, most prosaic and wooden "Tristan" ever. I'd give 20 more seconds of Karajan with "Liebestod" for Masurs entire legacy!

I believe someone has already stated this below but this was NOT Karajan's last concert. This was given in August 1987. He continued to give concerts long past this. In fact, one of his last concerts was with the Vienna Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall in New York in February 1989. He then gave a performance and made a recording of Bruckner's 7th with the Vienna Philharmonic in the Musikverein in April 1989. I know that it was his last recording but am not sure as to whether it was his final performance.

Karajan was a hugely dominant figure, with a vast repertoire; there were others who were equally great, perhaps greater within a less extensive repertoire: Celibadache: his readings of the Bruckner symphonies are unsurpassed I think. And George Szell's recordings of the last three Mozart symphonies have stayed in the catalogue for almost fifty years, with good reason!
@hectorberlioz1449 Жыл бұрын
@@johnschlesinger2009 how dare you to compare Celi with Karajan. His Bruckner recordings are so self indulgent and against the music. Szell was great and not only in Mozart. Bernstein, Kleiber , Haitink and Solti all were greater than the overrated and insane Celibidache. Obviously you have no understanding about conducting at all!

No se puede dirigir mejor. Eterno Karajan.

Actually von Karajan conducted the New Year's Concert in 1987.
@ cagin: By the way: at the Silvesterkonzert in Berlin on 31.12.1987 Karajan conducted the same program as in Salzburg on August 15th (Tannhäuser-Ouverture, Siegfried-Idyll and Vorspiel und Isoldes Liebstod), but with the Berlin Philharmonic instead of the Vienna Philharmonic. The CD edition is from Salzburg with the Vienna Philharmonic - one of the most impressive concerts I ever had the pleasure to witness).

@cagin : I was not precise: When I wrote "New Year's Concert" I meant the concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which Karajan conducted on 1.1.1987. In Berlin they have a "Silvesterkonzert" on December 31st, but this concert is much less prestigeous than the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic.

I am tired of correcting this but many people still does the same mistake by labeling this concert as Karajan's last. Has nothing to do with reality since this concert took place in 15.8.1987 and Karajan lived two more years before his death and certainly conducted many concerts (1988 new year concert with Vienna Phil. is one of the more famous ones) and made many recordings. Summary : This is NOT Karajan's final concert. HIs final concert was with the same orc. and he conducted Bruckner 7.

I know Karajan's 1987 the all-Wagner Salzburg concert was filmed. Does any one know where to find the complete concert on blu ray or dvd? There is no way that they just filmed Tannhauser and Tristan und Isolde with Jessye Norman and not the center two pieces of great music.

@arrrrrow The "critical" point, that he doesn't look at the orchestra??!!! Pardon me, I thought the critical point would be the quality of the performance... In earlier times, he did look at it; at this time, he had reached such a connection he may have not needed "to look". "You've met him": should we conclude you were his intimate friend? Maybe he cared more about the quality of the performance than about "the check"? And a manager, notoriously, tends to cheat his customers... (kidding...)
@Gheorgyi13 жыл бұрын
@MsMrgrinch All these "superior minds" who sentence "case closed" make me laugh. I'd love to see THEM conducting a symphonic orchestra of about 100 components. They look at him because the movements of his hands and his gestuality tells them what to do (as though, at this level and after years of experience together, there were any need...), while he can't develop a divergent squint by looking at the same time at the first violins AND at the basso's. All you ridiculous know-all, pipe down.

And it would be so interesting to know just what credentials you have to pose as such a musical connoisseur.

@abmsghost1 It's not being "rude", but impatient with fools. "Irrelevant"? I bet you don't even know what that phrase means. OF COURSE HvK held himself in very high esteem: he was conscious of his own worth. Should he have faked modesty to accommodate your father? He didn'y "abuse" any of the great composers, he conducted their music. I'm tired of this kind of bickering, and calling myself out of it. PS: "Age 104"? Don't be ridiculous.
