I bought the Xero excursion boots. They leaked after two weeks. To be fair Xero sent another pair free of charge...they also leaked after a few weeks. It's a shame as they are so comfy. The tread struggles in soft mud. I also did find the breathability was poor. I did buy the vivobarefoot forest tracker esc. They are amazing in the wet and mud...no slipping! Regularly use the leather balm and you'll have no problems. Great review. I enjoy you channel. 😀

I also bought a pair of Xcursion boots and they were probably the worst footwear I ever owned. They fell apart with 3 months of daily use. They leaked from the beginning despite being advertised as waterproof. They had a horrible chafing spot that never broke in and gave me blisters. They weren't cheap. I have heard similar things from multiple people. I hope they fixed the quality because I like the Alpine and Z-Trek design. Will not buy from them again until I know the quality is there.

As a resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota, I can confirm that the Xero Alpine is the king of winter barefoot boots! I have trekked on frozen lakes in -30 temperatures and did not freeze my feet - they are a MUST if you deal with serious Winter. Added bonus, they are vegan!

I am super happy with my Xero Alpine. They are the best gripping snow boots I’ve ever owned. I can walk straight up or down any snowy bank and not slip at all. I have some experience in snow as I live in Canada. I am a women and bought the men’s to get a wider fit.

I'm also a Minnesotan and sport the Xero Alpine. Yes, they are extremely good in the cold (-25F to 20F) even when wet. They dry super fast! My only beef is that they are NOT non-slip and are not very good on slick ice. I have reached out to them about using a lower density rubber for the Alpines, they did not have plans to change the sole to non-slip as of winter '21/'22.

YES YES YES!!! I would LOOOOOOVE barefoot protective construction boots :D Steeltoes are TERRIBLE for your body and balance - I never felt safe in them walking on top plates or roofs (rooves? lol) and had so much pain in my feet, hips and back. They seem like they protect you from 1 or 2 things while introducing 15 new issues. Now that I'm in barefoot shoes I keep thinking there's gotta be flexible but protective footwear out there for the few times you might that actually might step on a nail or shoot something into your foot. ;) I know a few whacky people that do construction completely barefoot and have way more confidence in their climb, gait, etc. than anyone in clunky Blundstones, etc.!

I recently bought a pair of Peerko Frost boots lined with wool. I don't think they are water proof, but so far I have not had a problem with rain or temps in the 30s and 40s. They are very toasty!

Just want to note that I recently bought Wilding's Rabina boots and have been wearing them for roughly 1 month. Though I love the flexibility, feel and style, I find the circumference around the ankle, even when tied very tight, is still too loose on me. I get SO many rocks in them and they aren't easy to untie, empty out and put back on so I kind of just walk with the pebbles & rocks inside until I get home. That's definitely impacting my love for them especially since getting them to Canada was expensive. I think they should change the design of this boot (perhaps others too) to reduce the material around the ankle my 1-1.5cm. I don't have crazy skinny ankles or anything. They are not warm, but I wasn't really expecting them to be. I actually don't mind feeling the cold a bit if it means I can feel the ground more. Thanks for doing a winter boot video! :)

The Vivo Tracker Forest Esc looks nice, but there is no way that it is an “extreme cold” boot. It’s not insulated, not waterproof (it’s water resistant according to their website) and is marketed as a hiking boot. 20 minutes in the snow, and you won’t feel your feet. I guarantee it.

I would agree with not 'extreme cold'. It would be an interesting thing to test. With their available thermal insoles and good cozy socks, I wonder how long they'd be comfy in snow/freezing temps? I've had my pair for 5 months, hiked and worked in wet mud, and tested in ankle-high streams with no wetness getting through. I believe they will continue to perform that way if the leather is periodically maintained/re-treated. I'm thinking of using Sno-Seal.

I use my Tracker FG 2 as hiking and winter boots, since buying 2 different paira for this purpose with vivos prices would be kinda insane for me atm. I can tell you that in combination with Merino-Wool socks, these shoes keep me warm and comfortable for longer periods of time 3-4h with temperatures of around -7C. Atleast that's the longest and coldest I had to use them. Most of this I would attribute to the Socks, they are insane for cold wheater. Even if you get abit cold from sitting down, as soon as you start walking they get comfortably warm again, big reccomendation.

The Emmer is quite nice and I love them as a warm sneaker, but wouldn't use them outdoors at 0°C for longer than an hour. Without an inner sole they don't keep the feet warm enough in winter. Edit: I just walked outside for 2,5h, between puddles and rain, 8°C outside. My feet are warm and dry!

I've been looking at getting a pair of jikatabi for gardening. While they may not be truly "barefoot" and do require special socks (they have the big toe separate), they do have steel toe options and are the footwear of choice for Japanese construction workers.

the main issue of boots with thin sole is that it's thin. If you have real winters with snow and -10 C you need thick sole that protects your feet from freezing. Because cold comes from below. Of course unless you cover only short distances from one warm building to another or move by car.

That's why the ones designed for the cold come with thermal soles or thermal soles can be added to them. Vivobarefoot's Tracker Winter SG (which is a new updated version of an older Snow boot) is specifically for cold harsh winters and comes with their thermal soles. The Tracker Forest ESC (the most extreme shoe in this video) I was told by their customer service can handle the -23 C we got in New England last winter but I will have to buy Thermal soles for them since they don't come with them. Also Merino wool socks are something else you can add to barefoot boots for extra warmth.

Xero Shoes said that men and women can wear both their styles. I find most men's shoes are slightly wider, so I got the Denver in a size 8 where I wear a size 10 in women's Timberland boots (which I need for deep snow). I like the Denver boots for most times of year. Although if it's icy, Vibram Trek Ascent Insulated are my go to, as while they aren't waterproof, they have amazing grip on ice, that I've never seen on anything else! I can still walk at about 5km per hour with them. The biggest downside of course is the same argument of gloves vs mittens, where having separate toes is quite cold. I'm hoping to try Toetoe's ski and snow socks with them this year. I personally find Vivo barefoot doesn't fit me right, but Vibram and Xero work better with my foot shape, so I'm glad I was able to get them as not everyone ships to Canada, where boots are very important. If anyone else is reading this and lives in Canada, Cool East Market has some good stuff, including lots mentioned in this video.

I bought a pair of Ahinsa lined winter boots. Very satisfied with them. Second year of (seasonal) use and still holding up well. The most comfortable "barefoot" footwear I have owned in about 10 yrs. They do not get wet easily. Not for extreme cold. Grip could be better on ice.

I live in Canada and have both the Vivo Barefoot Forest ESCs and the Vivo Tracker IIs (with thermal footbed). I love the Forest ESCs for my everyday wear, but anything under 0 celcius and the cold goes right through the bottom (Vivo I'd sold out of the thermal foot bed). The Trackers are more supportive/waterproof and can handle the cold pavement and snow a lot better than my ESCs, but they can't handle anything under -2 celcius. The Forest ESCs also arent waterproof nor would they be my go to for anything hard core. The leather is super soft and prone to knicks and scratches. My Trackers would be my go to for a harder hike but won't be able to handle a real Canadian winter. So I ordered the Xero Alpines because I now can't wear anything that isn't zero drop /Barefoot due to my feet going back to a natural width and all my old shoes and boots are very uncomfortable...now.

Another Canadian! I use the Xero Denver for fall and winter, and they're quite nice, especially with a pair of wool socks over my regular socks (I got half a size larger to accommodate that, and Cool East Market is cheaper but didn't have my actual size). I also find the Vibram Trek Ascent Insulated works well until around -5 C when paired with thick toe socks. In my mind, nothing can compare to the Vibram ones for ice grip, I can walk at a decent pace over solid ice (frozen puddles, etc) with no issue whatsoever, but since the sole is so soft to allow for that, they do get wet easily, which sucks here on the East where we seem to get more slush than snow. I have heard the Vibram V-Trek Insulated is better for that as they use a synthetic fleece rather than wool for the insulation, but I couldn't justify buying a second pair that was so similar and still not waterproof. I have a pair of boots with ice picks in them that really sucks (tight, hard soles, and without the picks, they're useless), and a pair of taller Timberland boots that I use for really slushy snowy conditions, but I have a lot of joint pain (waiting for a specialist) and also find that zero drop helps, combined with just being lower to the ground in general. Less chance of ankle issues, and the Xero boots have just enough ankle support to help without feeling stuck.

I like my Jim Green African ranger boots a lot. Not the biggest amount of groundfeel and not the highest boots ever, but I like how rugged they are and how little plastics is in them. They are definitely wide enough for a good pair of socks. Do note that they are leather, so water repellent but not water proof

I have Vivo Tracker II all weather shoes and with the thermal sole I have used them with no issues in snow around -20c weather for couple of hours. I also own the Wildling Flying Foxes and I can confirm that with some kind of thermal sole you are quite well equipped until the temperature hits below 0c. I use them as a day to day shoe until the snow comes.

If I'm moving huaraches with toe socks work for me down to about minus 5 C. Most of the cold comes from the ground. With snow and ice, I ditch barefoot shoes for deeper traction.

I live in Wyoming where winters can range from 50 degrees during an indian summer, all the way down to -40. obviously wouldn need different shoes as this is nearly a 100 degree difference, but with some of these 4 snowflake boots, do they fit socks well? Are there brands that make wider socks or do you not realize a difference.

And I can give a winter update on my Forest ESCs now 9mos later. Just before winter I treated them with Sno-Seal, an old favorite natural beeswax waterproofing, and they kept my feet cozy & dry through wet, muddy, ice, snow, and slush, up to about 2 hrs in temps below freezing. I have light merino hiking socks and the regular insoles. Note: these are sold as water resistant, not waterproof, but mine have performed as waterproof from right out of the box. It's summer now where I am. Using them lately for work in our woodsy pasture, harvesting some aging trees for firewood. Lots of stepping on & over branchy brush and some clambering along downed trunks :~)

I really wanted to love my Wildling boots. After 1 year in the pacific northwest (plenty of rain), they are falling apart. The sole is significantly coming away from the body (especially the split on the bottom), the laces are awful (twist constantly and started wearing out after a few months) and frankly, they look like garbage already. Despite taking good care of them, they get soaked in rain and take 2 to 4 days (!!) to dry. I literally have to cycle through other pairs of shoes whenever I wear these in wet weather. They were very expensive with shipping and duties to Canada on top of the price. Not worth the money :((

I think the Outlander is probably be best choice for winter boots. Is a pitty that there are a trillion shoes form vivobarefoot (and I love mine)... but there is just one from Lems. It does feel all quite biased. Lems do have 3 to 4 contenders that should be on this list, and for me the outlander would be most probably the overall winner.

Freet boots are one you missed. Also, Softstar Switchback for truly wide feet. Lems just came out with a great ‘Blundstone’ barefoot alternative. A review would be nice and to compare it to the Xero Tari…one narrower ( Tari) and one much wider (Lems). Also, one of your descriptions said Vivobarefoot is SLIGHTLY narrower than Be Lenka. That just isn’t the case. Vivobarefoot are one the the most narrow barefoot brands and Be Lenka is the widest. Sorry not trying to nit pick but that could be misleading some people.

The Vivo Forest Escapes look really cool but I'm concerned about them getting too warm outside of the coldest of temperatures. I'm looking for a boot that I can wear most of the year, is barefoot, and looks nice enough to wear around town. However I get a lot of rain in NC and while cool in the winder, I'm unlikely to deal with snow too much. Does anyone have feedback regarding if those would be too hot?

I think this video might hold a bit more credibility if they were shown in actual winter conditions. Try 2 feet of snow and minus temperatures. Only the Xero seemed like it would handle the temperatures and I know Xeros are much too narrow for me. None of these boots seem to have the height to handle any "real" snow unfortunately.

Steger Mukluks are my favorite! I can be outside in below zero (Fahrenheit) conditions for hours and my toes stay warm in those. I have the cute ones with the straps that tie around the calf.

@cranebeg amazingly actually. I still use them atleast 3 times a week for hiking/trail walking and the sole is barely worn. Leather is undamaged but I take good care not to accidentally puncture them. 10/10 still

I purchased my first pair of vivo waterproof boots within 7 wears that had split, I'll never buy vivo again. So looking for another pair of waterproof barefoot boots that can take 2-3 hours trekking with my dogs in wet and muddy areas, any ideas.

I recently bought the Vivo forest Esc on sale. I’m a big fan of the vivo brand and in my experience all their shoes and boots are extremely hard wearing so are well worth the premium - I’ve had some pairs 5 years at least and going strong. Amazing quality on the Forest Esc and probably their best to date. Incredibly supple and comfortable out of the box too. Can’t recommend them enough in fact.
