Haile Selassie personally led his troops at the Battle of Maychew (2nd Italo-Ethiopian War) and even took down an Italian plane with his Oerlikon. Upon his return he led the Gideon Force, along with Colonel Orde Wingate (World War II). His diplomatic battles were fought In Geneva, London and Khartoum.

I got to see Haile Selassie in 1973 when he visited Asmara. It was a huge event. The streets were lined with people and the children were thrown candy.

True, it was AWFUL from what I've heard. Similar suffering happened to the native people of Guam after the Japanese captured it. They literally enslaved them and according to U.S. soldiers who liberated the island, they found beheaded corpses of those who had resisted Japan's troops. If that isn't stunning enough, the Japanese were so confident they would hold Guam forever that they apparently sent whole Japanese families to the island, likely to make it a colony (with the Guam natives as their bondservants). An American newsreel capturing these findings is here on KZbin. The Axis powers were literally the most evil, hellish bunch in modern history along with the Communists that came after them.

Horror is all the various nations within what was then called Abyssinia, now called Ethiopia, lived under. In fact, the Italian invasion ended slavery in Abyssinia. People suffered under the Italians of course but they didn't want Haile Silasie back in power which was why he was eventually killed in 1974 and was buried under his toilet. This all is to say, that country's history is very complicated.
