Watching this really puts Anthy's dislike for Nanami into context, too- Nanami is a little TOO close for comfort- she wants to be chosen by her brother above all others, specifically. And Anthy has to deal with the fact that what Nanami wants would inevitably lead to where Anthy is. And the fact that, despite her kind of numbness for most of the series, Nanami knows that where she is is a nightmare. She can accept viewing herself as a selfless martyr for her brother's sake but it obviously gets under her skin to see Nanami following in those footsteps. She only reaches out using the cowbell because it's very passive symbolic gesture; reaching out actively would mean utilizing agency, and a sense of self, which she has rejected in order to stay where she is. Having agency and being the rose bride are inherently in opposition. It's not until the end of the show when she reaches for Utena's hand that she exercises real agency for the first time. It's why Utena says "Anthy, at long last I finally meet you." And it's why she fucking dips out too.

I am still convinced that every prank anthy does to torment nanami is also a covert attempt to warn her. even being found with akio in the observatory, and it ultimately kind of works since in the end nanami is too spooked to go back to her brother. But I also believe anthy hates herself and resents knowing she has to choose the lie instead of just believing it. so nanami reminds her of what she has lost and she is envious and resentful of her. she can't just warn nanami, she has to hurt her too. and maybe if it hurts enough, nanami will run while she still can

@@CrowandTalbot Exactly, that's why I was saying that cowbell was a passive way of warning her, because Anthy for most of the story lacks the ability to be like an active agent- she is passive or at most passive aggressive, but it was still a subtle symbolic gesture of warning that Nanami was acting like cattle led to the slaughter.

I always wonder if Anthy’s power extends to making it so people don’t question the world around them and she let’s Nanami see how messed up it is out of spite because no one will believe her. Or if Nanami is really one of the few people to actually question the world. Like was there ever really a mongoose in that desk before Nanami went to put the snake into it or did it only manifest in that moment the draw was opened. And once it was there, Utena perceived it as alway having been. And to Miki it was just common.

So I’ve been watching a lot of Utena videos the past week; I rather like that my favorite show from 25 years ago is popular again. I like your commentary very much! This show has tons of depth, and your observations are insightful!
