Great lesson why you don’t cut corners on an architect and project manager. I would of downsized the house and put out for detailed plans and a project manager. You can always add on eventually if you want to expand.

On most Grand Design episodes, budget problems could simply be solved by downsizing the build size by 30%. Oh yea....and don't cheap out on not hiring a project manager.

One of the great things about Grand Designs is the title music. Thank you, David Lowe.

Watched this episode 3x: makes me cringe what they went through in terms of monies coming up out of ground; doing things out of sequence; and much more... but they made it!! I find in building works there's always a solution - even if it costs. Builders are so adept at making on site decisions to resolve issues, whatever they are and even if it takes much head-scratching, time away from the problem, they get it done! This is a beautiful outcome. Beautiful home. ❤

Ddigging deep on an English shore is asking for storms to drive water at the house. You need to build high.

just put in an infinity pool, out the back doors, and fuck off with the putting the house close to the ocean. no need to be stupid. Your kids will never even have a home there to enjoy.

They should have kept it as one level. Easier to build and better not to have stairs as you get older.

Impressive house that cost a darn site more than 200k to build! I wonder if they are still there, 20 years on?

I think they are NOT. I read, under a different posting of this show (I forget where), that they sold up. Not surprising.

Constructing a proper building is super complicated. I will never understand the ego of people who think they can manage it themselves when they have zero experience in the field. Even professionals struggle because there are so many things that can go wrong or get missed.

I always think this. The money they “saved” by not having a project manager is almost always outweighed by the extra costs and time spent while they try to figure out how to do it.

And yet more than enough people pull it off. As a project manager myself I feel that if you have a planners brain, and are not affraid to ask the tough questions and look for the tough answers, then anyone can do it.

@@woutkoopman There are a lot of people that get it done eventually. Given enough time and money anyone can do anything, doesn’t mean it was time, stress, or cost effective. But yes, some people have that planners brain and will do the research, listen to the people they hire, make good decisions on when to pull back their wild ideas, and do a great job.

I’ve lived at the beach and have a property a stones thrown from the ocean now. The elements are harsh and if you start with shoddy, substandard products and construction you’re setting yourself up for endless headaches and a money pit.

Season 5, episode 10: The Miami-Style Beach House. Kevin McCloud meets Julie and Mark Veysey, whose Grand Design is a stunning Miami-style beach house on a beachfront plot overlooking the south Devon coast. Julie and Mark have had several holidays in Miami, and Julie wanted to recreate the outdoor beachfront lifestyle back in England, living in a house full of light and sun, within easy reach of the waves.
