I think Wolf (the non-remixed version) doesn’t get much attention because it’s very obviously sounds like a specific time in music like it’s easily dated. So unless you heard it when it initially came out it doesn’t have the same nostalgia feeling. Whereas a lot of other EXO songs aren’t as dated and are more or less timeless.

"Wolf" was EXO's first comeback since their debut promotions and it came out in May 2013 as part of their XOXO album. "Wolf" was another one of EXO's songs that the mainstream public thought SM was making an even bigger mistake with. It was a song and concept that was too unique for most mainstream listeners when it first came out, and most people didn't really like the song or the MV. However, as many have discovered, it's one of those songs that once you listen to it more, it grows on you, and now it has become much more popular. So what you see in their "Wolf" MV is that all 12 members come together to form the Tree of Life and in the middle of the song you see how they split up into EXO-K and EXO-M and each group creates their own tree. How I interpenetrate that is they are showing how the tree has now been split in half and each half of the tree represents the two halves of EXO. In the intro to EXO's debut "Mama" MVs they talk about how the Tree of Life has been split in two and each half has been hidden away. As aliens from Planet Exo, it's EXO's job to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them in order to restore peace in the world. However, as you saw in the concert performance, they don't split up into the two separate trees any more because now there are only 9 members. After the 3 Chinese members left, they now do everything together, so there is only one tree. This concert was in 2016 and Kris, Luhan and Tao left in 2014/2015. You should also check out the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version of their "Wolf" MV to see what the song sounds like in Mandarin and to discover how the MV is slightly different. In "Wolf" the members are supposed to be a wolf pack. So the entire performance and song is them acting like wolves. Everything in the MV says EXO, because as a wolf pack, they are supposed to be inside EXO's cave or the pack's den, etc. (Which some theories have pointed to, could be connected to SuperM's "Tiger Inside" MV.) The choreography was created to use movements that made them seem like wolves, and the moves, such as them showing their claws and bristling their backs and shaking are all things that wolves do as they compete for power and attention, etc. The wolf comes out of the forest (as he scratches the ground behind the Tree of Life) in the beginning of the MV and he is stalking his prey. Their prey is the girl that, in the song, they are talking about being so obsessed with and in love with that they can't help but act like a wolf and capture her so that no one else can have her, etc. In EXO's songs and MVs it is often thought that the girl that EXO sings about is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life. So, that is why EXO becomes so enamored by her and so possessive and protective of her, etc. Protecting the heart of the Tree of Life -- or "the girl" -- is what EXO has been sent to Earth to do. I'm not sure how this concept was supposed to fit into EXO's larger storyline, but many feel that after the 3 Chinese members -- Kris, Luhan and Tao -- left the group that the wolf part of the story was completely dropped and it is no longer part of EXO's story. So we just watch it as a fun side story now instead. Also, as you saw, the lyrics are about being a wolf. The main point of the song is they are saying, I'm a wolf, I'm a wolf and I love you so fiercely that I am going to capture you and possess you and devour you like the wolf that I am. As you can see, The concert version of "Wolf" is the remix version, so only the beginning and end of this performance is what you see and hear in the" MV -- the middle part, where it slows down, is new. Often, the performance and choreography for their songs in concert is different than the original because they put a different twist on it every time they perform it. How I interpret the part in the concert performance where Kai Xs out the tree, is that EXO are searching for the Tree of Life and Kai has eliminated that tree from their search. It's not the tree they want, so they get rid of it. In the intro to their debut "Mama" MVs, which sets up EXO's whole storyline and explains the group's concept, the narrator talks about how the Tree of Life has been split in two and each half has been hidden away. It's EXO's job to find the two halves of the Tree of Life and reunite them to restore peace in the world. So in their live performance, that is what they are doing. They are searching for the real Tree of Life. The shadows that they dance with also could have something to do with their X-EXO clones, which was later introduced in their "Obsession" MV in 2019. If there shadows are X-EXO, this could explain why we see them fighting with, and eventually eliminating, their other selves. Therefore, in this performance this could be a foreshadowing of events in their storyline that only begins to make sense as the story evolves and SM reveals more details in the future, etc. Which is why we say, if you want to really follow EXO's storyline you have to pay attention to everything EXO does and you have to try and remember everything you have ever seen and heard from them, because the story may not make sense at the moment, but it could be important in the future to help explain something else that is happening in EXO's storyline. And, at the end of their live stage, I don't necessarily think Kai is breathing heavy because he is tired. I actually think he is still in character. He has that brooding expression on his face and he is breathing heavy because he is acting like a wolf. Although I am sure the members are tired after that performances, you would be surprised how well they are able to recover. In reality, if you saw them interacting with the audience right after that performance you would probably be surprised at how they don't look or sound out of breath or tired. They have trained their whole career by doing cardio exercises while singing at the same time, in order to build endurance and stamina, so they are able to sing live while dancing this intently and not use up their energy. It's no surprise that you are impressed by everyone's vocals and dancing because, as SM artists, that is just something the company is known for. As you may know, SM is considered the vocal powerhouse of the industry. You literally can't be an SM artist without having amazing vocals and dance skills, even SM's rappers get intense vocal training, so all of SM's artists are some of the best singers in the industry. And EXO are the perfect example of that. Just imagine, that was only one song from a 3 song set, in a concert where they performed somewhere around 20 to 30 songs. So, if you think that performance was amazing, keep in mind, after this they only took about a 5 minute break to get ready for the next set of songs and change outfits, etc. What Baekhyun screams in the middle of "Wolf " is "Tokyo Dome," which is where this EXO PLANET #3 - The EXO'rDIUM(dot) in Japan world tour concert is being held. The Tokyo Dome is one of the largest concert venues in Japan, which holds 55,000 people, and there is an unwritten rule that in order to get permission to hold an event there you have to be able to fill it to capacity. EXO are such big-name artists that they have no problem selling out within seconds of tickets going on sale -- they literally hold the record for selling out concerts in 0.2 seconds -- and they usually have to have multiple day events in order to accommodate the number of fans who want to attend. "Growl" is the follow up song to "Wolf. "Growl" was the song that was the lead track on the XOXO repackaged album, which came out in August 2013. Now that you have seen both "Growl" and "Wolf," you should check out EXO's "Growl"/"Wolf" Drama video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXemp42LiNOoq9U. Watching the drama also might help to explain more of the story in their "Wolf" MV, however, as I said, I'm not sure the story goes any further than being mostly just a fun side story now. Fun fact: Kris' eyes turning red at the end of the MV will make more sense once you watch the drama version. On top of being aliens they -- Kris and Luhan in particular, and maybe Lay -- also are wolves. Just watch the short drama video to see what I mean. (Which is also thought to be connected to Lay's solo "Lose Control" and "What U Need?" MVs.)
