Chanyeol’s singing voice is so underrated but thank god he actually have videos online doing covers, songs outside of exo including his soundcloud. And the important song for EXOLs was PROMISE this was a song composed by lay, chen and chanyeol for the fans when tao left. At one point Suho mentioned in a recent interview, during that time they rarely talked to each other. They just held it together. But now he said that everything is good. And the boys always look happy together. :) especially in their recent reality show, which ill send you the link once its subbed. I want you to watch it because they are very special. :)

Okay, here's the breakdown. The whale concept was derived from the a whale called Alice aka ‘The Loneliest Whale in the World’, who is an unidentified whale species, being the only whale emitting a call at 52-hertz. The astronaut concept was derived from the story of the astronaut who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship and coming back saying that those 48 minutes were the longest and most loneliest of mankind. The combination of these two concepts placed within the MV discusses being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut is in space) and being isolated. Isolation was one of the themes in the mv. The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, would meet a low point where they feel most isolated and most out of their place, but that this song (and EXO) will be there to warm their hearts. There was also theories that this music video is about the ex members, cause ya know, space and Galaxy hyung (It's Kris, you'll know what this means in Showtime), and basketball is Kris' favorite sport, and the fighting scene was connected to Tao cause he did martial arts. I hardly believe this is about the former members, but people always wanted to say it was, so yeah.

I agree with you; I don't think the mv or song was meant to be about KrisLuTao directly. I'm more inclined to believe the mv represents different types of loneliness & how we can feel lonely even in a crowded room, but if you just turn around, chances are, there's someone there for you^.^ It's just easy for EXO-Ls to connect loneliness/sadness/hurt to the situation. The winter albums are supposed to be a gift from EXO to EXO-Ls, and the words behind the songs are supposed to be meant for EXO-Ls. EXO was apologizing for not telling us they love us enough, but still promising to always be there to sing for us, through our tears and smiles~

Not that I hate them but I sometimes don't really like it when fans do that eventho the meaning of the song is completely different. "Promise" seems to be the one that actually talk about their situation back then. & that whale & astronaut concept always gets me. It's so well done applied into the MV & connecting to the song.

"Sing For You" was a special winter single release so it is a ballad. EXO's winter albums are usually their ballad albums. "Sing For You" is literally, as the title says, EXO singing to EXO-L and some say the MV and song are about how the members feel and how they are dealing with Kris, Luhan and Tao leaving the group. The members really felt like they let fans down during this time and that they broke their promise to always be one. So this song was a promise and apology song. That's why you see Chanyeol and Suho get in a fight, because as the leader Suho really blamed himself for not being able to keep the group together and Chanyeol is pretty much yelling at Suho to stop blaming himself and that there is no point because Kris, Luhan and Tao made their own choices and there is nothing he could have done about it even if he wanted to, etc. They are all angry and sad because they felt like they were all so blindsided by all that happened during this time and there was so much uncertainty about what it meant for the group, etc. In the end you start to see them being happy and playing around as friends again because they were learning to get past it all and move on and they made the choice to let it go and to keep singing for us, EXO-Ls.:) The whale seems kind of weird until you discover the meaning behind it all and then it shows how clever and meaningful they were with the concept. The whale is supposed to represent Alice aka ‘The Loneliest Whale in the World’, who is an unidentified whale species, she is the only whale that has been found to emit a call at a really high frequency which means that when she speaks there might not be any other whales that can hear her or answer her back. The astronaut comes from the story of an astronaut who spent 48 minutes in his spaceship as he came back to Earth and how he said that those 48 minutes were the longest and most lonely of mankind. The combination of these two concepts along with the lyrics of the song talk about being away from home, being somewhere unfamiliar (since the whale and astronaut are in space) and being isolated from everything and everyone. Isolation is one of the themes within the MV. The song and the MV seems to talk about how everyone, in their lifetime, will reach a low point where they feel most isolated and like they don't belong or don't fit in, etc. But as the song says, EXO promises that this song and the members will be there to warm listeners', and especially EXO-Ls hearts. You should also see a live performance of the song, when they performed this live it was really emotional. :D

It has the highest suicide rate by country, with 24.7 people out of 100,000 committing suicide each year according to the Washington Post. According to the OECD Better Life Index, South Korea has the lowest ranking community support in the world, with only 72% of South Koreans feeling that they have people to turn to in times of need. Additionally, South Korea’s work-to-life ratio is lower than that of many other countries. By offering up inspirational tracks in the dark of the winter, EXO offer their own sort of 52-hertz whale to their fans. “Sing For You” feature aspects of loneliness, offering understanding to K-pop fans, both Korean and otherwise, who need support in the lonely world. Because it breaks the illusion of what it means to be an idol, and EXO is arguably one of the most popular male K-pop idol group in the world today, depression has been taboo to the group (despite former members leaving and others visibly struggling through performances). But throughout the music video for “Sing For You,” EXO depicts the sort of inner turmoil that isn’t about the love-related lyrics of the song, and instead depict the struggles that go along with the world that they (and the rest of us) live in. “Sing For You” is the opposite of an upbeat anthem; the music video shows suffering and loneliness in a way that just doesn’t let viewers ignore it. The 52-hertz whale may be alone, but he’s also a symbol of hope, of resilience, when feeling alone. By bringing out their inner whales and depicting loneliness that is on par with that of the 52-hertz whale, EXO not only helps their audiences understand that each individual isn’t the only one struggling in this world with loneliness, but also helps people relate more to the very human K-pop artists.

Remember in Love Me Right, you can see two jerseys hanged outside their lockers (Kris and Luhan) and one inside the locker but the door was opened (which refer to Tao who's no longer with them but hasn't officially/lawfully left yet). If i could make a request, will you react to audio listening of 'EXO 2014 (Promise)', please? This is if you want to keep the performance for EXO-mas, but trust me, it's better to watch the performance (with lyrics) one. Because if you believe that Sing for You was about the ex members, then Promise was EXO's song about their feelings towards EXO-L in between the situation, written/ arranged by Lay, Chen, and Chanyeol. Hope you get through everything that is hard to you at the moment, don't be sad, you can always cry of course, nothing embarrassing about that. Fighting!

This is one of my most favorite EXO songs and it's also one of the most underrated in my opinion. It always gives me goosebumps at the chorus. And it always makes me feel so emotional. There are various theories for the song, like you said one of them is singing for the members that left... but another is singing for the members that remain. They went through a lot, and the song is like a reaffirmation that after all that their relationship is stronger. They may not always understand and talk about it but at that moment after everything, they felt the genuine affection and camaraderie. Suho and Chanyeol fighting, people said it could be about how Suho doubted and beat himself up as the leader over the other members leaving and Chanyeol holding him back. I believe this song is for us and for the members that remained too. I think it's meant to comfort us in times of loneliness. Most of the winter albums have that purpose. If you love Chanyeol's voice, please do watch him singing :) he had a duet with Chen that was awesome, it's called If We Love Again. He also has a soundcloud where he puts out his original songs and covers. He also sang Coldplay's Everglow for his sister's wedding, and he sounded so nice even though the range was so high for his baritone voice.

There's nothing wrong with crying, I cry when I watch this. Its simple, its beautiful, touching and meaningful, especially for the members. I can't watch it and not feel sad knowing what it means to Exo. Just like I need to hear Miracles In December every Christmas now or I don't feel complete, and its so beautiful, I cry every time, and I know it's gonna make me cry, and I think it's because I feel like I need a good cry. We all need that from time to time, its only human. But this song highlights that each member went through their own agony when the members were leaving. It was sudden, something they couldn't stop, and these members were like brothers, so I'm sure they were torn between wanting to help their brothers but didn't know how, and the company. They all BELONG to the company, this is their JOB. So they were devastated. Yet were required to continue working despite their feelings. They were told not to talk about it, just work. So they did. And that was hard for them. They had already bonded with those members. It took a toll on the group. They were thinking the group might break up. But they survived. And they thank their fans for loving them so much and sticking with them through such a struggling time. Because fans were outraged at the company as these members left. Rumors were rampant.But like me, the fans stuck with Exo. They are so talented, I love them and how they make me feel. I'm glad they're still here.💖💖💖

The mv reflects their emotions, about what and how they feel after everything got messed up. Suho blamed himself. He felt he didnt do well as a leader. He felt he couldve kept all the members if hes a good leader. He felt he failed them. 2014 couldve been their biggest downfall to the point that they stopped talking. They just kept all those emotions bottled up. Until Suho started to step in. He would talk to each member, tried to be open again until he was able to gather all together in a table and talk. Minseok felt guilty even more bec as the oldest he also felt it's his responsibility to keep the members together. Thank God those are things in the past. They have become stronger since then. Early last yr Sehun posted a cryptic message smth about getting hurt by people but forgiven by time. ...

The whale and the astronaut was actually inspired from a poem. Though the astronaut want to be with the his friend (the whale) forever, but he knows he has to go back from where he came from because that place is not for him. And he can see that the whale is sad through its eyes. So he also decided to let go of him 😔

My opinion bout this MV. First of all, the whole MV related to EX-member. Next to this would be PROMISE. Sadly there's no mv for it. Lay composed that song ato EXO-Ls as their way of saying sorry for breaking the promise of staying together, for hurting our feelings and also a way of saying thank you for still believing in them. Lay asked Chen to write the Korean version and Chabyeol for the rap part. Chinese version Lay did everything and was meant to members who left. He actually asked Tao if they could write the Chinese version together to which Tao agreed. But he left eventually. Lay wanted this song to be included in the album but SM rejected the idea so they only perform this on concerts. :(

I would personally say, this song is not for the ex-members, even if it's for them, the only song dedicating to them is Promise. That's all. I don't hate the ex-members but this is their decision to leave EXO. They move on, so did EXO. Kris also was being interviewed in a western radio and finally talked about his relationship with EXO after 5 years of leaving EXO, he never contact with EXO members since he left. That's the bitter truth :/ By the way, I cried along with you too, Mama Pillbug :( Don't worry, this song is so sad. Every time I listen to this, I remember all my hardships too. It's like listening to this song, it keeps me calm. I love everything about the whale and astronaut concept, the loneliness they potrayed in the MV.
