I love this song and this MV so much! Universe is my favourite Winter album of theirs. Lights Out is my favourite song off the album and is the song I want played at my funeral. I miss them and their gorgeous voices. I wish we had a new Winter album, this was the last one they made. I'm sad about that.

Something interesting to note about "Universe," is that it didn't come out until 2017, but if you were to watch EXO's 32 pre-debut teaser videos from 2012, you will hear that SM used "Universe" in at least one of those teasers. So, even before we even knew who EXO was, SM was working on setting up their storyline and putting little clues in their teasers for us to look out for in the future. SM did this with several of EXO's songs. They used them as soundtracks on the teaser videos and then surprised us by releasing the full song years later as part of an album. That's how much forward thinking SM has put into developing EXO's storyline and why we have said that absolutely everything that EXO does is planned out way in advance. So even though I can see how people might think on the surface, that it seems as though the members are all talking about their friendships and the struggles they had over the past few years -- about Lay, etc. I'm not really sure that that was the original intent of the song. Because, if SM originally produced this song in 2012, as we hear in EXO's pre-debut teasers, then that was before EXO had even gone through any of their major struggles as a group. I think the meaning of the song has evolved only because we as listeners have reinterpreted it to fit a new narrative. That's the beauty of songs like this, you can interpret it however you want and make it fit whatever story you want or need it to. However, I totally agree that the MV could be telling a completely different story. And now after 5 years, they have reinterpreted the song to represent their friendship and their connection to each other and EXO-Ls, etc. and that is part of the story the MV is telling. I just don't think that was the thought anyone had when the song was originally wrote and used in their pre-debut teaser. :D

I agree that it was most likely NOT the intention of the song when written because this song was not written by one of the members. However since this type of song can be interpreted and adapted in various ways it allows for those different meanings to shine through. That is something I have always loved about a lot of their songs. 😊💕

Omg... I cried. I’m finally starting to dig deep into exo (I’ve been distracted by too much again 😆) and I had already seen this MV before. Didn’t look up the lyrics. It wasn’t something I could vibe with because I found it right after I found monster and I LOVE dark concepts and that’s my fave MV even to this day. But I’m opening my ears to some of their songs I didn’t quite vibe to the first time (it’s like barely 2 I think haha - I haven’t gotten too far into their music) and this was one of them I never went back to. I’m so thankful you did this reaction and posted it... idk if I would have ever gone back to it anytime soon tbh. Now the MV AND song hit different. It was beautiful the entire time, Chen caught my attention in the song immediately surprisingly.. but the moment the song got to the end and they said “because it’s love” I legit started crying 😭. That line hit me so hard. I’m just trying my best to spread my love and appreciation towards exo a lot more and I have to tell you, this helped. I also watched the reaction you did for mama, I love the message but unsure of the song.. while the MV (both), everything about it spoke to my emo soul 😂. Anyways I’m so excited to dive deeper, get to know them and their own struggles and being a family thru it all. I have so much room in my heart for these guys. And I mean ot12... I am going back to the beginning the best I can for everything. So again, thank you. So much.

Caitlyn still has a long way ahead, poor thing! Universe was the first album where all the lyrics are gender neutral, it was amazing of them to do it that way. I love how you explain everything and all the theories. I don't think this song has nothing to do with lay nor exols. The video tho, the video is about them and their silent struggles and how they overcome them when they decide to come together and share their problems. I can't wait for you to show her "For Life" that's a video for exols!

I'm glad someone noticed that Chen usually gets the worst hairstyles for the videos. I feel like there are only two to three MVs when the stylist is not taking revenge on him for being so nice and loud :D It's actually my first time seeing that MV too and I really really love it and yes, it made me cry (I did listen to Promise again a few hours ago too, so double the struggle) Since they seem to release such songs after hardships (eg. Universe and Promise) I'm wondering if there will be a song connected to Chen's marriage and all that mess that some so called "fans" created. Because I wasn't a fan of EXO when the news of Baekhyun and Kai dating other celebrities surfaced, I'm wondering if it created the same uproar as the latest news? From what I've seen there really weren't any "fans" that were against these two having relationships. :(

I've really only skimmed the video because I have class soon (woo for online semester *heavy sarcasm*) and you may have mentioned this already in the video. The whole Universe album was written with gender-neutral pronouns. At no point in any of the songs do they use the Korean forms or pronouns for he/him or she/her, it's all they/them or cute nicknames. SM being SM never stated or even acknowledged that this was done but it is something fans figured out when looking at the lyrics and something I love about this album ^^
