A continued look at Generation Ships and Interstellar Colonization.
In order to colonize the galaxy, we are going to have to spend huge times on board equally huge spaceships. To move thousands of people, and our ecosystem, to distant planets, will require not only giant ark-like starships, but entire fleets of them. Today we will examine how we could do this even if physics never offers us any superior methods in the future for covering the void of interstellar space faster.

The 5G evasive maneuver reminded me of a scene from a show called Knights of Sidonia. A rediculausly huge generation ship had to do a double digit high G emergency maneuver and something like 1/3 of its crew died as a result. I don't remember the exact g-force but I do remember thinking that it would kill a bunch of people. I also don't remember the exact death toll but it was insanely high.

For double digit G forces 1/3 of the population seems pretty low.
@mechredd
@mechredd 2 жыл бұрын
@@garethbaus5471 the crew had been genetically modified to better survive in space so the high G's may not have been as big of a problem for them as I first thought. Splattering against the wall when their safety harnesses broke was the problem graphically depictedin the scene. The ship was built out of a hollowed our asteroid and was something like 1000 years old. It had several large open areas inside that contained small cities. Some walls broke, and many hard points that people tethered themselves to failed. People would essentially fall sideways for a quarter mile before hitting a main bulkhead or building at several times terminal velocity.

Her displacement-the actual mass of the vessel-is estimated at approximately 100,000 metric tons (110,000 short tons), slightly less than that of an American Nimitz-class aircraft carrier."

It occurs to me (and my next book will include this concept) that a ship that leaves Earth in 2050 using whatever tech we have at that time might be surpassed by a later ship using better tech that is developed later. Imagine that a 'century ship' with a projected travel time of 100 years might arrive at their destination only to find that a faster ship with better tech left 50 years later but arrived a decade earlier.

Hi Arthur, After seeing this video for the second time, I got an idea of how to brake a starship at the destination star. Instead of using the braking method you suggest by sending a series of starships each braking a little and thereby helping the next, I suggest this: 1) Send your starship using stellaser 2) Your starship is a giant "Mass driver" that can accellerate packages (Projectiles) using magnetism. 3) When approaching the destination star, fire off Projectiles in a series of shots. This will slow you a little down. 3a) The projectiles will have the speed of your Starship and the speed added by the Mass driver. 3b) The Projectiles is fired in a way that they will slingshot around the star and come back to you. 3c) The "giant Massdriver starship" can now catch the projectiles doing the reverse of firing off projectiles. (And possible magnetically adjusting projectiles' flight-vector before catching them, like a buzzard ramjet is thought to do with hydrogen) 3d) Your speed will be greatly reduced by "catching" these high-speed projectiles. 3e) The faster your starship goes, the faster the projectiles are. 3f) You only have to add "a little" energy to the projectiles, not much matter. And you can regain your mass by catching it going back to you. 4) Of course you will have to be very exact at firing the projectiles, and it's potential dangerous, but hey this is SFIA :-) 5) You will actually be able to accellerate using this "mass-less" technique as well. 6) As long as we depend on mass for propulsion, this has to be the most efficient way of accellerating. Only adding energy for accelleration. 7) Without doing any math, I can conceive that only a smaller mass (maybe 1% of the starship) needs to be projectiles for any starship speed. (remembering 3a, and the fact that you can adjust the parameters to fit: firing time, projectiles speed etc.) What do you think? Isn't this a way better way of braking a high speed spacecraft at the destination? Please let me now if you think this is conceiveable.
@isaacarthurSFIA
@isaacarthurSFIA 5 жыл бұрын
You can't realistically slingshot a high speed projectile around a star, that only works if it's moving in the zone of that star's escape velocity, way under even 1% of light speed, and it's also speeding up as it approaches from that same gravity pulling it toward it.

When you talk about transporting ecologies, please talk about how acceleration could affect trees, especially in rotating habitats. Specifically, if acceleration of the ship occurs along the axis of a rotating cylinder, any trees standing along the inside surface of the cylinder would experience an apparent horizontal force, which could potentially topple them if it is too high.

Nice video. Regarding the slow down problem, one technique that the NASA and other space agencies use is the gravity of the planets, moons or even the star we are visiting. The idea is to enter close in an orbit with that planet/star and just use fuel to pass from one orbit to other, like doing an spiral. This means that the ship will need to pass several times around the planet/star and when the speed is much less the use fuel to go to final destination.

I've been looking forward to this episode for... well two days. He only announced it a day or 2 ago. But since then... great anticipation. Also, exodus fleet sounds like the great beginning of a sci-fi series. Isaac Arthur novel confirmed??? Edit: another KZbinr i like, Jeremy Scott, better known as cinemasins, wrote a novel, The Ables, that i quite enjoyed. I used a lot of commas in that sentence. Anyway, i think an IA novel could be a great triumph. A more successful attempt at realism in the vein of Card, wth similar character development. Im thinking he'd be in the same vein as Ramez Naam or Daniel Suarez... realistic to the point that yeah, this might actually be happening now or very soon.

Personal opinion ahead: If I had to design a colony ship I'd make it a modular "mini fleet" ship where the engine detaches from the habitat and other components and they then fly 100 to 1,000,000 km apart. Then put early warning drones and shields ahead, and thus leave the most massive and thus slowest components out back. And also leave the engine furthest in the rear. That way all the stuff that cannot maneuver as fast is given extra warning time from the components ahead of it. And, if your engine is a "flying bomb" type engine (antimatter or anything else where the fuel could explode if anything goes wrong and ruin your day) it is given the most warning and reaction time. And, if it does explode the debris is behind your habitat. Though if I could I'd have the fuel separate from the engine and have a "pac-man" ship with emergency fuel supplies on route or waiting up ahead. Maybe even an extra engine or two. Though, I'm a very impatient type of person so if I were making a ship to get there as fast as possible I'd have a pac-man ship but instead of fuel I'd send out large focusing lenses to refocus a stellaser for most if not all of the journey. Sort of a temporary and janky laser highway.

If you were to build a circular particle accelerator you could bring subatomic particles up to the mass of huge freight trains and then accelerate it in the opposite direction than you wish to move your ship. This is admittedly a very complex rocket but if the Accelerator ring is on a plane perpendicular to the direction of thrust you could then take your exhaust particle and lower its sideways velocity and thus its mass to the point that you could then bring the particle back to the primary accelerator ring without losing all the velocity gained by deflecting it rearward. This is not a reaction-less thruster it just appears to be one from the outside.

Neil deGrasse Tyson has been the star in science for me. Isaac has now passed Tyson, and is my NR 1 to listen, learn and enjoy the future with! I liked your "Alien encounters" series the most. Do you have any plans to add more "Crazy-Smart-Fat" aliens videos? I would looooooove that! I would really enjoy your view on how a possible encounter with aliens races would look like. If you use the Star Trek "Warp Tech requirement", how would that unfold? IF there are galactic teams of alien races, where they contact us first when "we are ready". How would that look like? How would the politics in galactic empires look like, with aliens psychology like: Humans - Klingons - Romulons - Ferengi - Borg, if they all are around in different empires?

I was wondering if you would do a show on refining materials in microgravity. Mining materials in microgravity is somewhat straight forward but refining them seems a whole lot more difficult and I haven't seen much on doing that. Thanks

Maybe I missed it, but launching those probes from your generation ship will also provide some breaking thrust. Using a railgun/massdriver to launch them would eliminate the need for fuel, and if that stellaser is providing power that might not be a bad idea. It could also work with your nav computer to eliminate small objects you encounter en route, although I would still want a laser too. And each probe launched does reduce the mass that you will need to decelerate at the end of your journey. As for the stellaser, I wonder if it would be possible to modify its beam to double as data transmission. You are catching the beam with a giant antenna array after all. If it could transmit information as well as thrust, it may be possible to augment your crews en route by beaming an intelligence with the requisite skills to address the needs of the crew/mission as they arise- plus transmission time. This is important because if you don't need a geologist until you arrive, you can just beam his/her mind over as they are arriving. Androids could be used to house these transient intelligences. In this way, you can reduce your crew and the habitation space and support systems. The less mass on each ship, the faster it can accelerate and slow down. So eliminating the mass of even a few dozen specialists that will not be needed prior to arrival could save the mission a lot of time. On a similar note, if 3d printing of living tissues can ever achieve creating living organisms either micro or macroscopic could save literally tons of mass because you would not need to keep your future biosphere alive for the entire journey. You simply fabricate it on location when it is needed. Without needing to provide a biosphere with shielded living quarters, you can save huge amounts of mass and necessary crew. The crew itself need only contain a few dozen fertile individuals and a freezer full of thousands of fertilized embryos ready for implantation. And as for the materials needed for colonization, much of that could be manufactured after arriving with resources harvested from the asteroids and planets in the system. Again, why take unnecessary baggage along if it is only going to slow you down? While such a ship would still dwarf anything we have ever built in space, it could be made to be a fraction of the size of the ships you are describing. If so, we could speed up these missions a lot and colonize the stars much much faster.

I really like that your rocket equation chart, in addition to integer and a couple rational ratios, has ratios of e and e^2. However, I would have to take off 1 point if I was grading the chart. e is about 2.718281828 The chart lists 2.71 for e. 2.71 is e truncated to the hundredths place. Correctly rounding e to the nearest hundredths place is 2.72

Wouldn't you send drones ahead at MUCH faster speeds to auto-manufacture Stelasers and use those to slow down the ships? Seems like a better way.

A breeding TWR would probably be better than an rtg. You simply load them with non fissile heavy elements at the start of the journey and activate them in sequence as needed for a very stable and predictable power source. Since non fissile uranium is very stable they wouldn't degrade with time either. Use the spent ones as particle shielding in front of the craft for dual use. The unused ones can be stored behind the ship in the mass shadow for shielding from relativistic neutrons that might start the breeding process early.

a stellaser would probably be more likely retro reflectors that bounce directly back at the other mirror instead just two mirrors. since light doesn't reflect on a mirror at 180 degrees but 90, watch technology connections video on retro reflectors.

Hey, Isaac and others who are interested, I had this thought sometime ago that I thought would be nice to share: so for colony ships, I keep seeing the use of spin gravity to provide a section of a ship with gravity. While that is fine, I can see it possibly leading to some mechanical problems. So instead, why not provide gravity throughout the ship without that potential problem? I propose the ship take the accelerate-to-halfpoint-and-decelerate-for-the-rest procedure and do so at 1 g through whatever means presented. With this acceleration, the floors can be stacked "vertically" in relation to the ship's horizontal profile, allowing you to be on the "floor" during acceleration phase and on the "ceiling" in the deceleration phase. While this might cause problems for things that are sensitive on gravity orientation, like hydroponic farms, maybe those suite can be gyrostabilized when the time for the rotation comes, far easier to manage than a constantly spinning giant rig in the middle of the vessel.

now you just have to propose a mechanism which easily provides 1g of acceleration for an extended period of time.
@AnakinSkyobiliviator
@AnakinSkyobiliviator 6 жыл бұрын
But to provide rotation to kilometer-wide ring and the limited surface area in which you can walk on and that requires even more power the more surface area you want to add? The combined surface area of the decks could probably meet that and with a smaller profile.
