I work in a lumber yard. I was sifting through some boards to figure out what I wanted to use for a cutting board. I picked some exotics but was told most are poisonous and can’t really be used for cutting boards unless only used for decor. Is this true? I see a lot of exotics used in videos and I highly doubt people would spend 100s of dollars on a cutting board they couldn’t use.
@ShopTherapy Жыл бұрын
To the best of my knowledge, that is not an accurate statement. I have heard the argument that some exotic woods contain oils that certain individuals can be sensitive/allergic to, but the general consensus was that no food would be sitting on the board long enough to allow those oils to leach into the food. To your point if they are toxic then 98% of the cutting board industry is doing it wrong 😅

Nice but personally i would have used a jointer with glue. Just adds that additional strength more than just glue itself.

Nice work. If you really want the purpleheart to pop, wipe it with acetone and leave it in the sun for a few hours. The purple becomes amazing.
@ShopTherapy4 жыл бұрын
I'll definitely have to try that next time, thank you!
@jameswalsh40563 жыл бұрын
i'd like to try your idea Tim. Would you apply the acetone after final milling and before glue-up or prior to any milling/sanding?

Be careful though too much Sun turns it brown.

I was wondering why you didn't wipe off the gluing surface on the Purple Heart with solvent to remove the oils. The gluing can fail with oily woods like this?
@ShopTherapy4 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, and I don't have an answer lol 😆 I've luckily never had any problems with the glue holding longterm so I didn't think to do that, but it sounds like a good idea and something I'll do going forward.

just curious .....did you sell this board if so how did you price it....or what would you price a piece like this. The materials are expensive
@ShopTherapy3 жыл бұрын
I didn't sell this one, it was a gift for a family member. I've honestly seen prices all over the place for these but I'd check out Etsy to get an idea based on the size, materials and layout (some are laser etched, have fancier patterns, etc) because they vary so significantly. Hope that's somewhat helpful!

I was with you up to frame 1:31 . . . with 1 purple in center flanked by a red on both sides. Then you cut to the dog for a few seconds and at frame 1:38 there are 3 thin red strips and 2 thin purple strips . . . I do love it but I missed that step . . . lol . . .
@ShopTherapy4 жыл бұрын
Haha, very good point! I apparently forgot to record the part where I took those 3 strips and cut them in half. I thought the contrast/change of size would look nicer than everything being the same size :)

@ShopTherapy4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The boards were 1/2 thick and I cut them into just over 3/4" wide strips to account for planing the surfaces.

Nice video! I make mine the same way, except without the naptha step and without the planer - lots of finishing by hand with a belt sander instead. I recently purchased an electric hand plane, so maybe that'll cut down the time a bit. How do you like the Dewalt planer, now that you've used it for a while? Would you recommend it?
@ShopTherapy5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The first few I made without the planer so I definitely know what you mean about the sanding, I actually ended up killing my orbital sander making a few boards lol. I honestly love it though and get way more use from it than I expected I would when I bought it. It's a big investment which is what kept me from getting one for so long, but then I saw a deal on Amazon that let me pay $100 a month without any kind of financing to get a kit that had the planer, both infeed/outfeed tables and a set of replacement blades which is why I ended up getting it. Having it sent to me with only $100 down and being able to pay for it over time made it that much more enjoyable.

Beautiful board... forgive me if im wrong... but doesnt that beeswax finish at the end say that its not food safe on the bottle somewhere. Im pretty sure i have that same bottle and i chose not to use it because i read that in there. I will double check tomorrow. But thats a beautiful piece of work there!
@ShopTherapy4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, haha. I just went and read the whole bottle and didn't see anything mentioning that is was or was not food safe so now I'm curious. I started making my own mix of beeswax and mineral oil though so hopefully it won't be an issue but I certainly don't want to be promoting unsafe practices.
@ajkustoms53864 жыл бұрын
@@ShopTherapy so i just re read the bottle i have. It doesnt exactly say that you cant use it on cutting boards because its toxic... however it does say to avoid prolonged skin exposure to it as well as if ingested you should see a physician. So thats equally alarming to me lol. I just thought you’d like to know, not trying to step on your video. I too am going to be making my own from the Katz Moses “goo” video lol. Anyways, love the content so keep it coming!

Is the Naptha dangerous?
@ShopTherapy4 жыл бұрын
All chemicals can be dangerous if you don't take the appropriate precautions, but in this case I'd say no it's not really dangerous since I was in a well ventilated area and wearing a respirator. The fumes are nasty, but it evaporates from the wood very quickly and won't leave any residue behind if that's what you meant. Naphtha is definitely not food safe or anything like that, but it's great for cleaning the wood without raising the grain after you've sanded.
