It wasn't until I studied transcriptions of his playing that I really understood the level of mastery he was on.

This is outstanding stuff. Only 560 views?! I've never seen someone take Art Tatum's style and digest it so methodically for us. Every jazz pianist should see this.

Wow! Quite a demo at the end! I used to read Mr. Hyman's column in Keyboard Magazine regularly, before I had any interest in playing jazz, unfortunately. Good to play some catchup.

Dick Hyman is pure piano brilliance( as was Tatum) takes genius to help us understand another genius .. I love his arrangement of “Skylark” ( check it out )🎹❤️😊

Wonderful demonstration. Tatum was the Piano God, regardless of genre. Trying to box his genius into “Jazz” is a slight disservice. Rachmaninov certainly agreed.

Super amazing video. I wish there was one that went similarly deep in detail but analyzing Fats Waller's devices and general playing.
@itsRemco4 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen a documentary/lessons video yet as well with that amount of detail regarding Fats Waller's playing. I think Mr. Hyman would be the best fit to make such a video actually
@Aaron-md2eo2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think that's true. He really is a master of super accurately imitating other players' styles. Altough, I'm not sure if he's still active nowadays as he's already in his mid nineties. I really do admire him as a pianist, he's a marvelous musician.
@CliffordLetsche3 ай бұрын
Many of the devices used by Tatum are easily played by people with regular sized hands (even though his were huge). Some styles are really hard to navigate without having huge hands, like Fats, Nat Cole, Oscar Peterson, etc. That could be part of it. It’s easy to fixate on his outsized personality, but Fats was an amazing pianist…
@KawhackitaRagАй бұрын
If you follow Michael Dunn's channel "Noteman", he's posted several dozen EXCELLENT exact transcriptions of Waller's recordings, not just some of the piano solos, but also solos he takes on band performances (and sometimes, his piano playing for the band, or under his vocal, etc as well). The body of these transcriptions together (plus any he may add in the future), form IMO a true masterclass on Thomas Fats Waller's piano playing.

22:00 Art Tatum was years ahead of his time harmonically
@paxwallacejazz3 жыл бұрын
Whats striking me is that the chromatic content is generally more ornamental than structural unlike mature Bach or Satie/Debbusy/Ravel or Bill Evans or a Wayne Shorter Ballad. I always try to make my chromaticism architectural which normally complies with chromatically altered harmonies.

Tatum died kinda young. He’s yet another artist who could easily have become much more sophisticated or “modern” in concept had he lived another 20 years.
@KawhackitaRagАй бұрын
@@CliffordLetsche He was already ahead of his time right out of the starting gate, and yes we have no idea how he would have changed musically, if he had lived decades longer.

I can't find this music played by Tatum.
@KawhackitaRagАй бұрын
These are examples of various devices Tatum used, and are shown as standalone exercises, not necessarily in the context of a full recording. However as Mr. Hyman notes, Tatum reused these devices over and over in various keys in various pieces. So if you listen to enough of his recordings, you'll start to spot these devices.

Haha, funny. NOT. Seriously: the family name Hyman is the anglicised form of some older German family names: "Heimann" or "Heymann". Which is one of the family names that European / German Jewish families also adopted during Jewish emancipation and (partial) assimilation between 1700 and the early to mid 1800s (most probably due to phonetic similarity). Before this time, Jewish families didn't use the modern Western system of family names but used to adopt the names of their male ancestors, and the source of "Heymann" would (most probably) have been Haim, Chajm or Chaim, initially a Jewish male first name (which in Hebrew has various meanings: "life", or also "teacher" among them). Also, Dick (Richard) Hyman's full birth name would be "Richard Roven Hyman", where "Roven" is the shortened version of his mother's birth family name Rovinsky (her brother, Dick's uncle, a classical pianist didn't shorten his surname, though). Both of Dick's parents were of Jewish origin: Dick's father Joseph Charlap Hyman (1889 - 1949) came from a Sephardic background, his mother was Lee Roven Hyman (neé Rovinsky) (1896 - 1970). Dick's older brother Arthur C. Hyman (1921 - 2009) was the one who intruduced Dick to Jazz, when they were kids, by letting him listen to his Jazz records. So, next time you make such an "original" joke, perhaps you first use your ability to research a bit more about those things you want to make fun of. Or you might even decide to show at least some respect. (Apart from that: I suppose Dick doesn't like it at all if people use his commercial content without his explicit permission.)
