I've noticed some things that tell you before a match starts if someone will be bad. On Wii U, people tend to be better if their Mii is more detailed (you know, not a massive smile and the regular plain black eyes), and on 3DS, like the Link you found, if their name consists of all capital letters. I don't know, that's what I tend to see.
