Fascinating. Excellent video. Particularly liked the bit a bit how you could view it's construction.

Wonderful ! Please make more Allan Holdsworth videos ! His music is like a legacy. When you see accomplished musicians like yourself studying his music, it cements his legacy more and more. Can you please enlighten me about the Pull off thing ? He never did ? I myself am transcribing his music lately and i didn’t notice that. Great Video Yet Again !

Thanks very much! Regarding pull-offs, Holdsworth felt that pulling off distorted the purity of the sound, as you’re literally pulling the string slightly out of tune in the motion of pulling off. He developed a technique where he ‘hammers off’, so lifts his finger off and hammers on the note below rather than pulling off to it. It’s a tricky technique to develop and requires a really low action, but it explains why when you slow his playing down you can hear every note so clearly and with such clarity. It’s almost more like a keyboard than a guitar. Hope that makes sense…

@@PeteCallard Thank you so much for the kindness and the reply. I’ve noticed that his playing is totally creamy and fluid, butter, but i never thought he would be so into it to the point of having active pull offs. Nothing surprises me since he was a Legend pretty much on every aspect of the electric guitar. Please make more videos covering his material. I’ve made a playlist on my channel where I have all my Holdsworth covers if you are kind enough to check. Used your In the Mystery and Devil Takes the hindmost to practice and learn. Thank you once again, wonderful player, great content.

Thanks so much, Holdsworth is my favourite guitar player so I’ll definitely do more videos on him - I just wish it wasn’t so hard! Just been checking out your videos - amazing playing and attention to detail. That must have taken a huge amount of time to get together!👏👏👏

Truth be told in some instances Allan does pull off towards the floor, usually in slower passages where, I believe, his fingers don't have the velocity to generate a good hammer. Of course, he could generate the hammer at a slower tempo if desired, but it kind of throws off the flow of an easy, smooth delivery. This is my intuitive opinion as to why he doesn't do quick hammers at slow tempos. If you watch him demoing his Kiesel guitar demo video you can see him perform these pull offs at slow tempo and hear how different they sound from his "all hammer ons" method, back to back, with visual confirmation. After that it is easily identifiable by ear alone as to when he swaps in pull offs. They give a totally different attack. Allan has called the pull off attack a "meowing" sound. Also, and Allan has said this, and you can see him do it at certain viewing angles, '...I do more of a lift off...", to paraphrase. He actually does gentle pulloffs by lifting his fingers off and slightly TOWARDS THE CEILING! This motion is undetectable from a fully front view if him. There is a concert on here from somewhere in Germany with lots of shots from Allan's right side, giving a great view of his left hand, where you can see him lifting off slightly towards the ceiling. Another point of interest on display there is how close his fingers stay to the fretboard. This close action helps smooth the legato too, I find when I apply it. That concert is priceless to see for students of technique. It took me about two months to get the all hammer on technique down, like starting from the beginning again. But it was worth it.

Great analysis and expansion of a great lick ! where have i seen that strat before...i'm 99,99% sure you used it on ''I am you'' , ''Juggling Molecules'' , ''DMT'' , ''My head feels like a frisbee'' back in the brilliant 2013 Live show in London ? haha

You’re eagle eyed! Yes, I used on the Troxy gig I think - it contrasted nicely with Simon’s black strat…
