Years ago, after becoming an "adult", I realized I could start buying the cards I longed for as a kid. I saw the difference in the price of PSA 10 vs PSA 9 and thought, "A 9 is still MINT condition, I don't need the 10." And was able to buy a lot more of my favorite cards because of that decision.

GemMint is the biggest scam in the hobby. Mint was always the gold standard in collectibles before there sports card grading companies created this artificial high end market with the GemMint. I collect like you do as my motto. Is, “A 9 is fine”. We have a Mint collection of cards, and the Rolen PSA 10 vs 9 example of centering that Chris shows in the video confirms my opinion of PSA 10 cards.

Perhaps the extreme case.... 1980 Ricky Henderson.... ......pas9 - $125,000 After watching many KZbin PSA submittal videos and seeing beautiful, flawless cards graded 9 or even 8 I have wondered why any COLLECTOR would ever bother buying a 10. I'm glad I am not alone.

And this absolutely speaks to my philosophy as a collector. If I have a valued and treasured card in raw form that looks gem mint to me I'll leave it that way. Having it graded and coming back a 9 only diminishes it. Throw in the cost of grading and that makes that 9 even worse. I have bought some 9s and 10s but I'm happy with my raw collection too. I'm a collector saving money and working on a limited budget. Great video that leaves one to pause and consider.

Since I don't resell I shop the card and most times I pay less then the grading fees. I just love having all the rookie cards that i couldn't get when I was a kid. For example I just bought a Bo Jackson 87 Donruss psa 8 for less then 20.00 with shipping.

I've been collecting sports cards for 30yrs now and have never bought a 10. I only buy psa 9s and sometimes 8s. The cost of psa 10s to me is extreme. A psa 9 card is considered mint and that's what matters to me. On any given day a 9 can be a 10 and a 10 can be a 9 depending on the grader that's grading the card. I'm surprised more people don't appreciate psa 9s more considering that it means the cards Mint! Also feel the gap in price between the two is far to large. Thanks for the content!

I had 100s of cards graded from my collection, mostly junk wax era, in the last 2-3 years. I sold most of the PSA 10s, all the basketball, kept a few 10s and bought 50s mid grade baseball HOFers. The 10s are creating false scarcity, when you often can’t tell the difference between a 9 and a 10.

More than half the people in this hobby collect plastic and what's typed on the paper slip in the plastic than they do cards. Buying / getting 10s is all that matters to them, as long as the slab tells them it's a "10".

It always amazes me when I goto a local show and I’m looking to sell my doubles to dealers. They don’t even look at the card, if it’s a PSA 9, they look up comps for a PSA 9 and that’s their comp price. It could under graded or over graded, and all that matters is the PSA grade.

I have a TON of PSA 9's (in a few eras) and, for some odd reason, SGC 4's (almost all vintage of course). Eye appeal is important for me, but always different from person to person. I don't mind something slightly off centered as long as the corners are sharp and it doesn't have any noticeable print defects. Or if it does have print defects, I prefer it to be better centered. Just some tradeoffs that we all go through as collectors.

This!!! Great topic Chris, and exposing one of the great myths in collecting. Unless you are a high end dealer or rich 10s are overpriced and irrelevant. 9s are great for 80s and up and most of the time you couldn’t tell the difference. For vintage I simply go with a “collectors grade” of 7 for 70s, 6 for 60s, and so on. Obviously for the big ticket players you get whatever you can afford. Even if you’re a collector who wants to maintain value in your collection, get the grade right before the biggest price jump. Off the top of my head I think of the SP Jeter. I would buy the PSA8 at $600. 90% or more of collectors aren’t going to dish out the $8000 for a 9, so if you ever wanted to move it, that 8 grade is going to be in high demand for the largest swath of buyers. Just my perspective and opinion, but great stuff!

Not disagreeing with you and Mike. But I always believe in buying the best you can afford for your collection. As collectors we get into this mentality as buy for your enjoyment vs not wanting to look like an investor which I don’t understand. We eventually have to sell or let go of our collection whether it’s because of financial reasons or mortality. Why not take the chance of maximizing that when you get the chance. I also think this might be a good topic to talk about in a podcast? It would be way too long here in the comments section.

So I think you made a REALLY compelling case that for a collector with a reasonable budget, the PSA 9s are a MUCH better value. But here's another question... Which would be a better INVESTMENT long term? Tough one but I'm going with the PSA 9s. To me there is a much better chance that a lot of those cards double in price (from say $10-12 to $20-30) compared to hoping that the Puckett doubles in price to $1500. I could very well be wrong. But at the very least those 9s should hold their value. I fear that may not be the case on that Puckett

After missing out on 3 of the 9s on eBay (half the PSA 9 pop) I caved and paid more for a 10. Also not all 9s are created equal. I've had some with noticeable scratches and print lines. I’ve been doing this since I started rebuilding my collection! I started buying raw but then saw that a few more dollars I could get PSA 9s better investment no grading fees and I know I’m getting a good quality card in a PSA slab! But I’ve also started buying SCG and CSG 9,9.5&10s because I’m a collector the card is still graded and looks as good and also I’ll buy the CSG Green Label 9.5s and then when I get several others I want I’ll send them in and get them back as 10s and the price is the same or in CSG way less most of the time! I’m looking at two what looks to be future HOFs RC now in green label 9.5s for $18 each one a 1st Bowman Chr. And Bowman’s Best. I’m my eyes as a collector I’m getting more Value for my money! And I may try to crack and get PSAs 10 one day but I’m not interested in selling them! I’m a Pure Collector And Love My Cards, The Game of Baseball And The Hobby Of Collecting Cards!!! Nice video Chris!

Of course, that makes a lot of sense but the "elite collector/investor" (not referring to Donruss Elite cards here) wouldn't do that because there's no prestige in owning a $25 slabbed card that's widely available that anyone can have. Those people want to acquire something that they consider highly sought after and difficult to obtain.

There's nothing wrong with owning rarer collectibles. You can buy rare stuff without paying premium prices if you know where to look. Original photos are still mostly an uncharted territory. I've bought many originals for as little as 20.00 or less, and they all have been HOF players.

@@vintagecollector5340 I never said that there was. I'm just saying that the big money collectors/investors will always want what's considered to be the most expensive version of those cards.

I had a PSA 10 and a Psa 8 of Kobe's Topps RC they looked the same other than a brown spec on the back of the 8. But the fronts were Identical.

The fact there are over 20 HOFers in a 7 year period tells you about how watered down the HOF is.

The grading companies continue to be disgustingly greedy in my opinion. Grading scale 1-10 you could say you have a 10% chance to make a huge profit if you get a 10. You lose money on grading fee alone with a 90% chance on the majority of the cards in the video with any grade of 9 and under. Ridiculous! People please stop grading cards at least for a few months to wake up these greedy companies. They haven't adjusted down on grading fees with the market nearly enough.

I buy 10s on the couple guys that I love for example Nolan Arenado. Ill take 9s on the rest due to just wanting the card in my pc at the cheaper price point . Collecting 10s for Hofers if you have the cash flow would be awesome but lets be honest most of us mortals are on budgets.

My man! Always appreciate the content. But if I may be so bold, would have loved to see more pea 10 vs 9 comparisons. I know your research department is vast so I love seeing values like that and I don’t have to utilize my research department which is suspect at best. Would have been nice also to see which had the biggest gaps and smallest gaps between 9s and 10s. Anywho great stuff as always just a recommendation for future research department deployments. Great thoughts! Every collector has their own quarks. I’m pretty sure Mike only collects PSA graded cards or prefers them over SGC. From my standpoint, I have no preference in grading company or holder. You can acquire a lot of nice pieces if you can control your OCD on many levels 😂.

What is crazy to me is that almost all of the cards even graded a 9 sell for far less then the PSA $19 grading cost even if you are a $100 a year collectors club member! Like why would anyone even send those cards in to be graded. PSA needs to lower their fees for real. Card gets graded a 9 from that era and it sells for half of the grading cost/ Thats absurd. If PSA wants to continue to have real business they are gonna need to knock down the grading costs to like $10 a card. I have all of these cards and i know all of them are a 9 and some would be a 10 but why send them in. If they all get 9s i lose money, alot especially after shipping there and back and insurance. The difference between 9s and 10s cannot be seen with the naked eye at all.

I feel the grading is very suspect these days with all the different graders. I do not buy cards online as I have to really get a close look at what I buy now days. I am into mid-grade vintage cards. Even with those the grading is all over the place. I've seen many 5's that look a look nicer than cards getting 7's.

If they take the subjectivity out of grading and figure how to use AI so that the difference between a 9 and a 10 can be precisely determined, than I would buy the 10 if I could afford it.
