Not even a little bit surprised by WVU being ranked 21 and 1st in the Big 12. West Virginia students only make up about 1/2 the students. Kids from New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania make up the other half. Out of state tuition is significantly cheaper than instate tuition is for those states. It has always been this way too, so there are a LOT of fans outside the state.

EXACTLY not only are you getting an entire state with over a million people that are almost exclusively wvu fans but you get major footholds in all of the border states plus much of the east coast and mid Atlantic people forget kids used to stay up past there bed time to watch Pat white and Steve slayton on Thursday nights wvu became almost a lovable meme among the cfb community because of them being a cheat code in ncaa 07

A little more than 15 years ago WVU had the largest warched non national playoff college football game on ESPN, and it was on a Thursday! WVU at Louisville. For 3 years in a row WVU was one of the most televised programs on ESPN networks, admittedly they have fallen off some. The Big 12 has not helped WVU with scheduling. They still are a marketable brand. Pay attenion driving around, you'll see the flying WV symbol around. It is a popular brand.

@@samsnyder4433 what helps the Mountaineers is it's on the east coast, was in the Big East and a lot of the schools from there went to the ACC and now the Mountaineers are in the Big 12 and we have a history playing Penn State and other teams in the Big ten and also a good history of playing SEC schools. We also have some pretty good rivals. Not to mention all the great bowl game victories against many teams including the Georgia bulldogs and Clemson which we beat 70 to 33 in a bowl game and we played for national championships but lost. 🥴 But brand does not mean best it just means people know who you our. It's like more people probably know who Nike is but I like another brand and I think it's better made but Nike is still the bigger brand.

The Big East was a power conference that was always in the National Championship conversation. WVU played for the title in 88 was constantly in the mix in the 90's and at time in the Rich Rodriguez era. WVU is in reality a blue collar WV, PA, an NJ school with a big DC presence. Because NJ schools are so expensive there is a huge NJ alumni base. More people watch WVU than Rutgers in NJ. In the current big 12 WVU being the East Coast outpost drives up value.

It is wild how no matter where you go in the country, you'll run into WVU fans that are from the state or are connected to the program in some way. I think what people don’t understand is the amount of people who are from WV but had to move due to jobs and economics. It’s a lot like Steelers Nation. West Virginia is easily the top brand in the Big 12 not saying it's the best team that would be based on year to year but West Virginia actually plays other great teams like Penn State and Pitt when other B12 teams seem to hide from playing other good teams or at least scheduling them. Next year we start playing Alabama. West Virginia is also the 15th most winningest school right behind Clemson and above Texas A&m. Next in the Big 12 I think is Colorado than Utah but I think they're down in the 40th most winningest teams. West Virginia's fan base will travel and pack a stadium and TV ratings are great when they're playing a decent team on a network and West Virginia has many rivals outside of Penn State and Pitt. You can make an argument for about another 10 teams throughout history we have had a rival with plus we have played for a national championship which we lost against Notre Dame. Last time we played Clemson it was 70 to 33 in a bowl game. West Virginia seems to own the ACC. We have paperwork and all to show it. 😁 Title in hand. 🤣😂

Last year I for some reason got a K-pop girls group (Korean pop) in my Facebook feed. One was wearing a Press Virginia cheerleader shirt. The big 12's historical mistake is not getting how big a brand WVU is in East and how small many of their schools, excluding TX and OK were outside their regions. On a national level and beyond WVU is probably the biggest brand left in the league historically.

WVU is nationally known. I have been saying this for years. WVU has many alumni and fans in major east coast media markets including DC, New York, Carolinas Georgia and Florida. When WVU is winning, the viewership is high. Even when losing numbers are not terrible. At least go back and do a bit of research to have good talking points..or trust your source. Also, WVU has always been a school and brand affiliated with "power 5" the Big East was not a 2nd tier league, It included many ACC, Big 10 schools, along with WVU. The midwest base of this conference does not detract the value of a university that the media has the numbers to back it up.

How hard is it to reach Morgantown for most of the fans? If it's tricky to get to or there are issues with being at the stadium, a lot of fans might opt to watch at home. It's similar with the UFL and Birmingham: the city's a bit in a bowl and the stadium setting exasperates the heat and thus there's a lot of couch support.

WV and the brand is a world wide recognized logo. When WV gets a good TV slot they almost always outperform on that spot through the year. In addition WV is always a top 25 brand sales for Nike. I would definitely believe WV is the top brand in the BIG12

Lets Go Mountaineers! People really underestimate how far WVU's fanbase reaches. Just because we are not a highly populated state doesn't mean we dont have a large reaching fanbase. We are surrounded by Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virgina, Kentucky, and Maryland. We have a lot of fans in those states, especially in Pennsylvania and Maryland with how close they are to Morgantown. WVU is based in Morgantown but the majority of its student body is from NY, NJ, and PA. Plus its a guaranteed 2 million eyeballs draw (the only game in town for a state just under 2 million people not including alumni all over the east coast and south east). I use to live in DC before moving to Houston, never saw a Texas Tech, or Kansas State game in the DC metro if they were not in a bowl before I moved to Texas.

If you are looking at the last 4-5 years on WVU maybe but the last 40 years WVU has had some amazing games that drove TV market. You can take the person out of WV but you can't take WV out of the person. Just look at bowl game ticket sales, WV consistently buys more than their opponents. It's because WVU is the team of WV, with a small minority cheering for Marshall, and that fanbase raises their kids as WVU fans and there kids. We have WVU fans who are 3-4 generations removed from the state. WV is also in the Pittsburgh TV market and has more fans in it than Pitt does.

Perception often dont align with data/facts. Data shows what value metrics are important and according to this formula WVU is 21st, which isnt an opinion its a value evaluation formula. A lot of people who dont track or analyze value metrics assume because WV is a small state that WVU would not be valuable. Which is incredibly wrong. WVU ranks #8 or #9 in Brand Value(Logo, Merch, etc) WVU Ranks in top 12-20 in SM engagement WVU engagement % in the state of WV is much higher, and has strong fanbases located in NC, PA, Maryland & DC, NJ, VA, TN, & FL Cable & Streaming package Viewership is usually in the top 25-30 WVU ranks #4 in Watchability Also: WVU ranks in the top 20-30 in many sports, not just football. This is a massive advantage not many people recognize. Many programs while they have other sports are not actively followed by fans. WVU ranks pretty high in Football, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer(Men & womens), etc This is a pretty big * as it indicates higher engagement consistency throughout the year offering more revenue consistency and less singular dependency. Cumulative Engagement = Revenue Potential Total Fanbase Population may be smaller but its engagement % is much higher & allocated across multiple product lines. This is indicative of support & passion in many ways. EX: Fanbase_A has 3.8Million fans but mainly a "football only" type of program with engagement % of 50% for Football and 10% avg for all other product lines. Fanbase_B has 2.6Million fans & is highly active across multiple sports with an engagement % of 75% for football and 30% avg for all other product lines. Just a generic example, but thats how a smaller fanbase size or small state can actually offer more value. Also BYU is not the only show in town. Utah takes a large share away from BYU. WVU is the only show in the state of WV. Apart from a few stragglers that watch Marshall, but they dont take away any noticeable market share. BYU is a great brand, but they have just become a power conference and theres another show in town that takes away from their share/potential thats been in a power conference for a good bit longer. If Utes didnt exists, or was some small D2 program I would agree with you on BYU, and while im sure the religion helps, and I do see that helping them gain more value overtime, itll take them time to climb up the list. ALSO: BIG EAST was a power conference. WVU is 3-0 in BCS bowls(Sugar Bowl vs UGA, Fiesta Bowl vs OU, Orange Bowl vs Clemson). 1988 National Championship appearance vs ND. WVU lost as Major Harris(Heisman finalist QB) got hurt in the first drive of the game. WVU is also the 15th Winningest P4 program in football and a 21st winningest basketball program. These formula rankings can vary, because we dont know how these metrics are weighted differently in each formula. ie are traditional revenue metrics weighted more than nontraditional. I would think if you averaged a few of the more common value formulas WVU would rank in the 25-32 range. This particular formula / weighting method has WVU 21st. Another could have them 32nd or so, so there can be some ranking differences, but either way you slice it WVU's value is much higher than what most people would perceive it to be who assume state population equates to value.

In the old BIG 12 pecking order, TX and OK were 1 and 2 and interchangeable. Based on the historical success of the program, brand, University, consistency, fan base etc. . . If anyone thought that WVU wasn't 3 - you better ask somebody. Now in the new look BIG 12, WVU is the premiere program. As a program, WVU has been through the wringer in recent years but never slid off the table. If every program was at its best WVU is still better. WVU seems an odd duck in the BIG 12. Also something you're not taking into account when knocking on WVU football/sports is there's no professional sports teams of any kind in the State of West Virginia. @@Jbob37 I think the Big 12 is a great conference and a tough place to play but most of the Big 12 teams are not nationally recognized like West Virginia now that Oklahoma and Texas is in the SEC West Virginia is definitely the top brand not the best team but the top brand and that's not something we just achieved overnight. West Virginia just has a long history in football and we've been punched in the mouth by everyone but unlike others that run and hide we punch back win or lose we're going to do it all over again next year. 😁
