The Lock Tour boat gets you right up close to the dredging and other activities they’re doing, recommend it for all ages.

@curtdrellack8906 You are right... Companies always want bigger to carry more and the time will come when the Great Lakes shipping companies will want exactly that... to carry more... I know if they future proof it and rebuild that lock bigger than 1000ft long that will encourage them even more... but they'll always try and push the boundaries.... The new 24,000 TEU container ships won't fit in the Panama canal or the Suez Canal but it hasn't stopped them being built.

is it done yet?

If the "lakers" could not get through the Soo Locks to deliver their iron ore cargoes downstream, then it would be possible to send it from Duluth by rail - after all, the iron ore is railed from the mines to Duluth in the first place! It might not be as economical as sending it by ship, but it could be done! Anyway, I hope the project is brought in on time and within budget.

Do you have any idea how many trains that would require? There is a reason the locks are vital to shipping ore.

Sounds like a poor design, just big enough. No talk about newer bigger ships. Typical government project.

Those bigger ships wouldn’t be able to make it through the seaway from the Atlantic. Why do extra for ships that will never be able to get there?
@jstoli996c4s2 жыл бұрын
The ships going through the Soo Locks won't get any bigger than the 1,000 footers, so why overengineer them? Ship size is limited by size of the locks in the Welland Canal in Ontario CA, which won't accommodate the 1,000 footers.
@curtdrellack89062 жыл бұрын
They told me my 2012 f250 couldn't get any bigger in size, now look at today's new trucks,- wider, taller, heavier. Don't ever set limitations when talking about the future. One never knows. Also, the Barker size ships never leave the lakes. Always plan head.

@@curtdrellack8906the 1,000 footers were specifically built for Great Lakes travel, hauling massive amounts of ore. They were never meant to get to Lake Ontario or the St Lawerence Seaway,and the locks to get to them were built prior to the birthing of the 1,000 footers. There’s really no need to spend tens of billions of dollars to upgrade the locks on them to accommodate the 1,000 footers or large container ships like Evergreen.
@kentslocum Жыл бұрын
Not really. If the current ships are built to fit perfectly in the current lock, then building a second identical lock doubles capacity without overspending taxpayer funds.
