why not walk at night in the Callejones? That's an unfair statement. Guanajuato is a very safe place, even at night! Also, forgot to mention the best thing about living in Mexico....living with Mexicans.

Hi, I'm over in San Miguel de Allende. I've got two portable electric heaters in my condo, and they are quite effective at maintaining a comfortable temperature through the winter season. No need to walk around your home in a jacket. I used to fly into Leon, but the flights from the US are so much cheaper into Mexico City. From the Terminal Norte, there's a direct bus to San Miguel de Allende that gets me there in 3.5 hours, and certainly one to Guanajuato as well. I've just checked United's website, and a RT ticket from Houston to Leon is more expensive than my RT flight this coming September to Bangkok.....

love this story on Mexico. Many people moving to Mexico, because they can't make it in USA. America, keeps taking more and more money away from us. Cost of food, rent and Etc. Cost of medical is affordable in Mexico.

Wages are much much higher in the US. What happens when you rich gringos overrun an area like San Miguel or Ajijic is that you push prices up and make it prohibitively expensive for the Mexicans. Shame on you.

@@Ge0ffrey1 This won't affect you. What do you have to say about Sant Fe in CDMX? Puerta de Hierro in Gdl.? Excluive areas in Monterrey ? Judging by your comment, you and I won't be able to afford living in these areas in our lifetime. So let's just live and let live.

Great video. Food for thought, for anyone thinking of moving to Mexico because its cheaper to live. Remember that the more people who move there drives their economy up and eventually the cost of living will rise. It's akin to the "supply and demand" situation, and unless you are grandfathered in, you will have to pay the price.

$1000 for rent ? I can stay in North Carolina for that price. We are looking at Cuenca, Ecuador. I thought Guanajuato may be about the same cost of living but now I’m not too sure. Also looking at Chiang Mai, Thailand.

@@RedSpiralHandTV Right! Just like here in the US, one must carry out their due diligence and research. IF you do that, you can find all sorts of different properties at different price points. The time of year you go to secure a property also affects the supply and rental costs. These are some of the things I have learned from three recent visits to Mexico, and speaking with a Real Estate agent. But what I have also found is that taking the time to build friendships with Mexican people can pay big dividends! Not only do you end up with great people as your friends, but you also build a network of contacts who know the "hidden market" of properties that may be available for rent or purchase but may not be that obvious through listings. Just returned from Mexico, and had another great trip, AND learned from a transit through the airport in Guadalajara (GDL), that I would much prefer to transit there to other locations than Benito Juarez in Mexico City! GDL is very user friendly compared to Benito Juarez!

How do you find an apartment in Guanajuato? I cannot afford anywhere near $1000 US. Those sound like gringo prices.
@gabrielgarza8283

You can search "apartamento en Guanajuato se renta" or "casa en Guanajuato se renta" maybe replace the word Renta could be "se alquila" instead.

Google "casa en Guanajuato se alquila" ir "se renta" and you should find many options. I always do this, though I want to buy a mountain secluded house in another part of Mexico.( I won't tell you where, lest the prices start going up.)

he is right but I would like to put this in yes you can get something for $1,000 really nice but for a thousand US Dollars you can pretty much get a nice mansion for that each month probably less more like $500 but keep this in mind to get those prices you must learn Spanish that's when I started getting those prices if you don't know Spanish you will get a gringo price

I was certain that I would move to Costa Rica, but I got there, house hunted and didn't like it. Too far, too expensive, too many Americans and too humid for me. Not enough culture either, meaning too Americanized.

Lovely town. However, Guanajuato is not the best choice if you are an oldster. Everywhere hills and stairs. Many, many stairs and steps and more steps. You see very few old people and fat people in Guanajuato. Even a trip to buy milk is cardio-vascular. Many of the expats live in Pastita, which is relatively flatter but not as central as I'd like. Guanajuato will never become another San Miguel, overrun with gringo retirees, thanks be to God. The hills and the stairs function as a natural defense mechanism against the liberal tie-dye wearing jubilado. Rather, Guanajuato is filled with the young and was made for the young. One other comment about Guanajuato. People raise chickens on rooftops. Roosters do not start crowing at the crack of dawn, rather they start about 4 am and continue until about 3 in the afternoon. When one crows on one rooftop, another follows across the callejon, and so on and so forth.

I’ll save you a few more trips. Stay away from Latin America if you don’t like barking dogs or roosters crowing. Actually, you should probably also avoid most Arab countries as well. Oh, and much of Southeast Asia. Dogs are used more as intrusion detection systems than pets outside the U.S. and Western Europe. Roosters are used for gambling on cockfights. No one is going to hush either of them for you.
