Chasing Cars understands the starting price of the EV5 will be less than $60,000 AUD (before on-road costs) - that's $40K USD. With 10,000 units on the way to Australia - more than 5x as many EV6s sold in this country last year - Kia will need to give the EV5 a big push in the pricing stakes against the Tesla Model Y.

Sharp pricing in AU, that's rubbish, EV5 starts in China at 149,800 Yuan or AU$31017, if AU is over $60,000 it wont sell, looks like KIA Korea are ripping off Australians by overpricing the AU version to make up for the low pricing of the Chinese local version, Not a good move KIA for your reputation, example Tesla Model Y Rear wheel AU$55,900, Chinese version 249,900 Yuan or AU $51700 converted,, does KIA think we are that stupid, my recommendation is for Aussies to not buy the EV5 and let KIA know why, teach KIA a lesson to not rip us off, once they have so much excess stock sitting idle they will bring the price down.

Kia seem to be going big in the EV market with the EV6, 9 and now 5. The first two models are well out of reach as affordable vehicles. If the EV 5 comes in at $65K drive away it will also be out of reach as affordable. I say this because the median price paid for a new car is around $40K - you're going to need to save a lot on fuel and servicing to reach the extra $25K. Given that it is made in China where labour costs are presumably lower than Korea I don't understand the pricing. BYD, MG and ORA have all shown that EVs can be made for around $45k that's the price where lots will be sold and manufacturers will meet the NVES and avoid penalties.
@chasingcars5 ай бұрын
While your point definitely has merit, the average new car transaction price in Australia in 2023 was $50,000, not $40,000.
@Twopeetfeet5 ай бұрын
I think the fallacy here is that labour costs are the driver of low prices. The world at large needs to start adjusting and waking up to the fact that China has scale, IP and control of key supply chains that bring down manufacturing unit costs down significantly. Yes, I agree labour is a factor but automation, scale and supply chains are a bigger factor here. Add in some subsisidies from industrial policy and you have an EV juggernaut. There's a reason why GM and Ford are so keen on getting CATL to either set up a JV factory in US or license their technology if not.

Can we dispell the LFP = 100% mantra! No lithuim battery "should" be charged and left at 100%, that increases degradation, no matter the chemistry. LFP has a very flat voltage curve in the middle, and it only really changes at both extremes of SOC. Hence with a buffer, a LFP BMS finds it hard to track SOC unless you get near the top or bottom, and relies on "electron counting". Overtime this inaccurancy in "electron counting" adds up and the SOC becomes unknown, which can mean running out of charge unexpectedly. So the manufactures don't need to deal with the headache, they say charge to 100% regularly. Not to protect the battery, or because it is OK, but because they can't track SOC otherwise. In practice, don't charge a LFP to 100% every day, every time, unless you need to of course. Charge to 80-90, and every week or so before a trip charge to 100 if you want to extend battery life. Same issue with NCA if you only charge to a low SOC regularly, like 60%. The voltage rise at 60% is low, and the BMS can lose track of the actual SOC if you just use the 40 to 60% range for example.
@matthewmanzi95045 ай бұрын
You are correct in most but also it doesn’t matter. Charging to 100 percent should still give you close to a million KM on the batteries. Even poor LFP batteries should get 2000 to 3000 cycles when charging to full but good ones should get over 10k cycles. It really doesn’t matter what your charging habits are with a good LFP battery.
@davidgrieve76915 ай бұрын
@@matthewmanzi9504 Thanks for the comment. Very rare to find someone in the space who actually understands the subject matter - but I'd advise against 100% charging and leaving. It should be fine if you daily trip and charge overnight though. It's not the charge to 100% that is the problem, it's the time spent at a high voltage (and high temp). Lab cycle tests don't generally include sitting at 100%.

Yes, its more expensive than a similar segment (Sportage), it will have much more interior space, better drive, and be much much cheaper ongoing running costs which can save around $3k-$5k annually depending upon kms travelled. This is another important step in making EVs mainstream.
@vustatube5 ай бұрын
It's not similar. Sportage is hybrid, not even a plug in hybrid. This is a full electric vehicle lol EVs will always cost significantly more than a hybrid. If you're not sure a hybrid vehicle still has an engine and still requires fuel. EVs run on battery only with no engine
