Expedia Kids in the City: Poshbrood

Our nation's capital, Washington in the District of Columbia, is a family-friendly, beautiful historic city with endless monuments, walks, museums, restaurants and activities to keep your whole brood entertained.

Two important and wonderful things about DC:
1.) Admission to all 19 Smithsonian Museums is FREE! (Includes the National Zoo!)
2.) The 1899 Height of Buildings Act established that no building could be taller than the Capitol (289 feet) so Washington is not a city with skyscrapers, it is very European with a "light and airy" feel as Thomas Jefferson envisioned.
A few of our favorite family activities include:
1.) Taking a picnic to Jefferson Memorial
One of Washington, DC's most popular attractions, this dome-shaped rotunda honors America's third president. The 19-foot bronze statue of Jefferson is located on the Tidal Basin, surrounded by a grove of trees making it especially beautiful during Cherry Blossom season in the spring. Paddle boats are available for rent in the warmer months and is a fun family activity!
2.) Air & Space Museum-Dulles
Kids (and adults) LOVE the Air & Space Museum on the National Mall. But have you seen the second Air & Space museum in Virginia? The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles International Airport is the companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall.
The building opened in December, 2003, and provides enough space for the Smithsonian to display the thousands of aviation and space artifacts that cannot be exhibited on the National Mall. Our brood loves to check out the Space Shuttle Discovery that was recently delivered to the facility.
3.) Newseum
Do you have a budding journalist? The 25,000 square foot Newseum delights with exhibits designed with future journalists in mind. Kids can deliver the weather forecast in front of a green screen, get critiqued by a professional photojournalist after snapping photos of a news scene and view front page stories from all over the globe. So cool!
