Im also an O/O making plenty and it's nice to travel as well as be my own boss etc. Have a folding cot with a nice comfortable mattress that rolls up, have usually canned foods, bread and pb/ jelly and lunch meat etc.. saves on costs as well as no need for hotels.

How much are you grossing per week?
@RedsCustomDesign2 жыл бұрын
If you need a weekly paycheck this isn't the job for you. You have good weeks where you may gross (that's before expenses) $5k+ and there's other weeks you may not even get a load (but you still have your fixed expenses to pay). You can average gross $80k+ depending on you, the company, the area, the loads, the price, etc. Grossing $100k is not out of the question if you are a decent runner.

Golden nugget advice at the end there. Leaving your van in an active city with loads always being pumped out... That's good
@sharongypsydove83966 жыл бұрын
If you're going to drive for owner you better take 60/ 40 and you better get your fuel service charges 100% or it's not worth it... Any owner that decides he's going to keep the fuel service charges is a crook... And make sure you can get your 60% loaded on your Comdata card right away, that way you have your fuel money and your living money and also that way your fuel service Chargers end up becoming your payroll and guaranteed that coming in every week... I expedited for over 10 years.. I worked for two absolutely outstanding owners when my first owner passed away I went with somebody for 4 months from November to February... And when Freight wasn't running and I was sitting for 10 days in North Dakota in the cold he decided he was going to stop paying me... it took me almost a month to find a new owner and I wouldn't have been able to survive if the few loads that I did take I wouldn't have had my 60% loaded he kept all my fuel service charges for 4 months he owes me a little over $4,000 and I'll never see it... So you make sure you sign a contract that is binding... And always make sure that any equipment AKA your van you treat like it was yours... Keep it clean you take care of your equipment and your equipment will take care of you

Great video and setup. What kind of vehicle insurance do you have to have in order to do expediting?
@RedsCustomDesign2 жыл бұрын
Depends on if you book your own loads, or are using multiple carriers. Then you have to carry a 1 million dollar cargo/ liability insurance. Or if you are leased to a company you can get it through them. But that depends on the company. Regular auto insurance won't be, it has to be "for hire".

I wouldn't say there is a lot but there is a far amount. But expediting is like truck driving, it doesn't matter were you "live" because you'll be all over. Love the build, but would the van handle better and safer, due to wheel base dynamics, if the freight was carried behind the driver (middle of the vehicle), as opposed to behind the back wheels? Although it seems like maybe the Promaster has a better wheel base ratio than the Transit or Sprinter, but maybe that depends on the van length. Some vans have doors on both sides, which would be handy for freight.

So let me ask you. If I am now an expediter, and get a load at 18:00, after being off the whole day and being able to sleep the night before, am I supposed to get on the road and drive overnight, or am I allowed to wait until 05:00 or 06:00 and take off in this line of shipping? I don't care if I am 3 to 4 weeks or 3 to 4 months on the road, what I do care about is I cannot drive at night or overnight. I may be able to drive until 24:00, but I will stop, sleep, wake in the morning and carry on.
@RedsCustomDesign2 жыл бұрын
Then you won't be in the expedite business long. Because it doesn't work like that. You don't have a "sleep schedule" . If you don't have a run by noon then you better lay down and take a nap because odds are you will get a night run. That's how this business works, they call, you go. You sleep when you can. 70% of the loads will be at night. And driving for 10, 14, 18, + hours straight is not uncommon. Good luck to you.
@deanleman51472 жыл бұрын
Ok, I understand. What would be the max straight out number of miles an expediter is supposed to complete before rest? I read you listed 10, 14, 16 hours straight. 10 and 12 is acceptable, but 14 sounds crazy. Can I take 30 minute brakes? Also. I doubt that your van has a fuel dependency to last 14 and 16 hours on the move without refueling.
@RedsCustomDesign2 жыл бұрын
You time depends on the load. And how much time they give you. You can always ask for more but most of the time you won't get it. As for "allowed to drive" there is no requirement/ registration on driving in a van. I personally have drove 24 hours straight. Is it for everyone? No. Was it "safe" ? Probable no. Is it being everyday in the industry? Everyday. Most people will stop and fuel every 300-400 miles and fuel.
@MichaelSmith-qw3is2 жыл бұрын
@@RedsCustomDesign ok, now let me ask you. After you complete a long run, how much time you get to rest or how soon you get a another run? Do they take into account that you need some rest?
@RedsCustomDesign2 жыл бұрын
I never went out of service (unless I home). And that depends on where you are at, time of day, how many are ahead of you on the board (your same company). You can get back to back runs. Or you could sit for a week.

From what I gathered insurance price depends on your driving history, location (state you live in), your credit score, and insurance company. Some companies that you sign in to do expediting exclusively for them will put you their insurance policy for about $150 a week ($8000 a year). That is considered cheap. In some states the insurance can reach as high as $20,000 a year if you are doing it for yourself. Just check with different companies in your area or internet. This kills the profit.
