Cashflow is what keeps a business alive. There is nothing worse than sitting on big ticket items that won't turn over as that is cash that is not working for you. So many comic dealers don't understand that. I ran a collectibles shop 15 years ago and the owner loved seeing those big ticket items ring up. But usually those big ticket items had the worst margins and you'd be lucky to sell 2 or 3 per week (we're talking in the $600-$1000 range, not 10's of thousands). But what kept the doors open were the literal hundreds of $15-$20 items that sold every week. If I sold a Sideshow statue for $600, I would be lucky to make a $150 profit. Most of the time it was closer to $125. But on those NECA action figures that I sold for $20, I'd make about $8 in profit. And I would sell 40-50 of those action figures for each sideshow piece that went out the door. But the owner LOVED those big ticket sales, so he'd invest more and more of the operating profits into those big items. That's what led to us closing the doors. As an owner, I'd happily trade one massive key for multiple smaller books of similar value if I can move them quickly.

Bingo ! Steady cash flow ….. you can’t really afford to tie up large amounts on single issues that won’t sell but are worth big bucks … they aren’t making you money and your just Warehousing…. You need to stock books you can steadily sell and reinvest in books you can quickly sell.

Fun Fact: When you do your homework and price something FAIRLY, eventually it sells. It may not sell when you WANT it to sell, or as QUICKLY as you want it to sell, but if you CHOOSE to not be greedy and put a FAIR price on it -- eventually it will find a buyer.

This can be said for a lot of things in a lot of different markets. For example this is also why they split stocks so people can buy into it more easily other than having a single share like Bitcoin being at around $30k let's say. Also it's like classic cars as well. Right when you hit near or at the $30k the market is a lot smaller. But you're also likely can only sell it at an auction or a reseller. Those two people take out a lot of fees. So your actual take-home isn't going to be that much when you sell it. There is a sweet spot when it comes to comics and pricing I personally feel $1k - $2k is your limit for a easy sale and a person that might not know what they're buying but they want the book regardless. Anything over that you're going to be selling to a die-hard collector

To folks buying them for flipping beware you take a huge hit on your taxes. If you do conventions they’re great for attracting folks to yer booth. And selling them in person for cash at conventions is about the only way to not loose money.

My most expensive issue is definitely for a limited market. Its Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #17 from 1942 in a CGC 9.8. Not a key issue or iconic cover, and the issue isn't too difficult to obtain if you simply want to own it, its just a unique collectible because of how old it is in such a high grade. Lately I've been getting more and more interested in the Golden Age Books. The artwork is more alluring, the rarity, and just a bigger satisfaction when you hunt the one you want down.

About 10 years ago, I had Journey into Mystery #83 at around a 5.0 raw. I had a buyer that was looking to pick it up for around $18K. Came from my great uncle's PC, along with other older books I got from him when I was around 5 or 6. Sadly, we had some major flooding in our home, and I lost a good chunk of my some 3,000 books, JiM #83 among them. Started my PC up against around 2015 and am slowly working my way back up. Around 1,500 books in my current PC, but nothing major like Journey 83. I miss those older books.

A lot of selling high ticket items is creating a base of customers that can help lead you to more opportunities. I've seen it in both comic books and sports memorabilia. The more contacts you can make the better it is for selling.

I agree. My coworker advises to only buy 9.8 graded comics but the problem with that narrow mindset is a smaller pool of buyers when the book becomes very expensive. Also sometimes the lower grade books tend to appreciate in value at a higher rate which makes sense since collectors on a budget are the ones paying for lower grade copies. I am a little bit more flexible when buying graded books, for modern ones I am a bit more strict and tend to stick to 9.8 and 9.6 but if the price is good I will settle for it.

Most people who are not in the comic biz (dealers, sellers, KZbinrs) have a mortgage and general living expenses that makes spending four figures and above quite difficult. Add a spouse who you cannot talk into using disposable income to invest in books and well… you get the idea. Your stats seem normal and reasonable to me. Also my most expensive ungraded book is Hulk 181 est 9.4 per a dealer; amazing Spider-Man 129 9.6 or 9.8; and Amazing Spider-Man annual 1 in 9.0. I started collecting in the Bronze Age and have most Bronze Age keys and many silver keys ; but most of the silver is mid grade

I collect entire runs, and I have over 20,000 marvels in chronological reading order starting with the origin of Galactus at the moment of Big Bang to today. The origin of galactus is the actual #1 of the saga, a true key. I don't know anyone as hardcore as me. I don't grade or understand key collectors. People who have Action #1 aren't even as hard-core as me. I read the book "All the Marvels" by a guy who claimed to have read every Marvel comic, but he crammed through them, he barely grasped the saga. Reading the saga is what I do, and I don't know anyone who has actually assembled 20,000 comics in saga order. Marvel is interesting because all of those comics are one big story that even the movies barely scratch the surface of.

I get everything you're saying even as a Primary collector! It makes sense from an economic point to get some smaller but well known issues and try to flip them for a little more than go BALLS to the walls and get the big comics and HOPE you get a big buyer in your store, a lucky auction, etc! As to specific books for me...A LOT actually but...On a personal note: the 78 Whiz comics I got, Captain Marvel Adventures #1 (even if it is REALLY beat up), and the first appearances of Ant Man and Thor!

I make a pretty good living, but these days, I'd rather spend $100 on 50-100 books, as opposed to just one. I'm sure that plays into the market scenario for high cost books.

Great video.. I have always wondered how you handle the sale and shipping of a $12K book.. Do you just accept PayPal goods and services and ship it Priority Mail insured with signature? How do you prevent fraud? I know a guy that sold a $9K book. Buyer picked it up in person and he paid him in person with PayPal. On the buyer side.. I would have a hard time buying a $12K book and having it shipped. Not that a seller like you would not pack with care but I see the Post Office destroy well packed packages. Like you said.. the $10K+ book club is a small circle.. I guess folks could meet up in person and trade or handle their transactions that way if the high dollar collectors know each other.

James - I think you make some good observations about reaching the top tier. When it comes time to sell a huge book right now as you said, you don’t have the clientele for a lot of more common big books (GSX 1 in 9.6 or even 9.8 isn’t considered rare by most of the players because I could literally call and get one on demand). But a rare golden age book James people are going to find you. Most books even on the top tier aren’t going to fit that definition. But if you have a chamber of chills 19 cgc 8.0 you’ll have a line out your door. I’d also say that look at the margin you have to work with. You can sell to other dealers and depending on the margin you have the liquidity is often more valuable if you’re maintaining a wide margin. A bigger dealer likely has a wider client base but will want to hold their own margin. That said they pay immediately. The more unique the book the more likely one of the major auction houses will appeal to you (watch the fees) because many of the most significant dealers in the country are still running their stuff through auction (your friend Nick Barrucci can certainly validate that as well and has some very strong connections to deep pockets as well). But you’re right, it’s your network that will facilitate meeting the big time dealers and collectors - many of the established collectors are older and are simply not going to buy a book of a certain magnitude from anyone selling on KZbin Facebook etc.

I purchased a Captain America Comics 61 for a good amount of $$, 8.5, i believe it's a great cpr candidate and if it gets into the 9's, the most recent sales were close to 10k, but who will spend 10k on a Captain America Comics #61 in high grade? I guess i have those GA collectors in mind who want high grade GA. Impulse sucks, but I'm not wrong yet, it's the risk I've taken.

In the last 5.5 months I spent 6 figures starting my collection there are a lot of us that don’t care about 9.8’s we are happy just having the book. I had a Superman #6 I practically gave away for a trade for Hulk181 .5 purple Label because the Superman wasn’t moving at all

I hear you. I have an Incredible Hulk #1 UK Price Variant 5.0 and two Werewolf By Night #32 UK Price Variants, one in 9.2 and one in 9.4. As you suggest, they will have to go to Heritage I think as I've had no luck selling them as yet. What are your views on trades?

Now this I agree with. I sell via an antique mall and especially with the economy being where it is, lower cost items are still moving. It’s as though even with tougher times, ppl still want to be in the game and collecting something (albeit not the big ones). Just to feel good. I have listed big big ticket items on eBay and it seems every time I get bombed with scammers and I can’t psych myself to actually sell. I don’t think I trust selling anything over 1k on eBay.

I do not have any monster keys in my collection. It's hard for me to drop hundreds, let alone thousands, on a book. My nicer keys, were bought before the covid hike. I also bought some of my keys raw and sent them to get graded. My most expensive book is around $300.
