If you buy pliers buy Channellock. They’re made not far from me in pa. They are the best in my opinion and my experience and last a LONG time.

Great video! As a mechanic in the Army in the 1980's chinese made cheap tools is all I was issued, and they worked just fine. Used them on everything from the Jeep to the M1 Abrams.

The best place to Warranty Gearwrench (in my experience) is through your local Car Quest. My store still distributes Gearwrench and special orders what I need, which cost slightly more but they have always warrantied the tools easier than going to Apex to do it. Apex can be a hassle at times .

Good job Triple-T of the attempts to explain expensive verses cheap tools. No man needs to be picked on for the tool brand he prefers to buy, the quality of the repair or service job is what counts. A true, dedicated, 50+hr/week technician like yourself, Justin Dow, The Flat Rate Master, etc. can appreciate the value of a higher quality tool for performing your job. A DIYer who cannot afford the higher-priced tool truck tools, but gets the job done with Harbor Freight tools does not need to complain about the prices of the tool truck stuff. I fall somewhere in the middle. I'm a DIYer looking to do automotive service and repair work on the side and I'm not looking to quit my "day job". I can afford to buy the tool truck tools because if I'm going to be working on someone else's car I don't want to ruin the job and maybe their car by using a cheap tool. Keep up the great work!

Good video. I recently purchased the the Gearwrench ratcheting wrench set that comes with SAE and metric. It’s a 20 piece set. I use them every day and I am really impressed because I actually ordered them off the Home Depot website and I think I payed around 70 dollars for the whole set. Very impressed with Gearwrench.

I can believe in the quality of the Snap On ratchets. I have my dad's ratchets from the 80s and they were still in good shape before I rebuilt them. I use them now and they work like new. Good review, Tony. Keep it up. ☺

I bought a Craftsman/Nextec 1/4"dr, 12v, impact for $55 and a spare battery for another $20. It has 70ft lbs of torque with a very controlable variable speed trigger. It is light,small and just plain handy. It has been in daily shop use for 4yrs now and is holding it's own against the tool truck impacts at a fraction of the cost and size. I love my Mac and Snap On impacts but this was by far the best value.

To reduce and possibly prevent ratchet damage. I purchased 3 very tough Icon breaker bars. I also purchased the Icon wobble extension set. My newer Kobalt 90 Tooth ratchets should last a long time.

Snap On's locking pliers are made in Spain via Grip On - lots of companies use them - I have them branded as Snap-On and Gray Tools. They hold up well enough to life in the Rust Belt and I prefer them to Vice-Grips.

Their lights are something to stay away from. I was told by a Snap On rep that Matcos ratchets are Gear Wrench. I don’t have a GW to compare mine to but they do look close.

Hey Tony if you want snap on quality sockets for 1/3 or less price wise buy USA Williams. I bought some and there is def a difference. I bought the Williams reversible ratchet wrenches too which are the same as blue point just way cheaper. Anything USA Williams has letters and numbers Taiwan Williams is all numbers. Taiwan is the exact same as bluepoint and us is snap on previous gen stuff.

I spent some time in plumbing and had really good luck with Channel-Lock adjustables (daily use) and as far as ratchets go I'm a DIY'er so Stanley and PT has never done me wrong yet. I have a Stanley set of wrenches that have like a satin finish on them that are pretty good as well. I believe I mentioned the Kobalt set of flex ratcheting wrenches I like in another one of your vids. Now I have a Pittsburgh set I like but I'm not in a shop so I can get away with it. Thumbs up brother.

Harbor freight definitely upped their quality with the flex head comfort ratchets, ive been beating them to hell for 2 yrs as a forklift mechanic, and not a single issue. The 1/4 flex is my go to for small work

Check out Williams proto Wright and SK as well. To give you an example though my dad was using a 14mm craftsman socket that kept slipping on a sway bar link nut. So I told him hold on I wanna see something. I grabbed my 14mm USA Williams socket never slipped again and got it right off. So there are differences that’s for sure. I myself never thought there was I thought oh it’s all bs hype. Well now I know from first hand experiences that the differences are there.

The new crescent brand long butterfly pliers ate the shiznit they work better than my knipex and snap ons I think Gearwrench makes a set also but awesome leverage and better access if u don't have them you may really like me I use them all the time since I got them, open wide and grab tight

TonyTheTechnician the cutter and I think linesman style pack of crescent are really nice too I ordered from Sears the sets and they work really well also, check out Cripe distributing for some great tool deals too a lot of NOS from USA companies and a lot of good deals, they also combine shipping and it saves a bunch they sell on eBay and you can order directly too but a cool store I got some killer prices there. I order 10mm sockets by the 5 packs for the techs that always lose or forgot them in vehicles.. I don't work for me but a great company with a ton of different stuff...just figured it may save you some cash! Good luck with your racing training for school too I'm jealous!😁

There are some good brands out there that aren't tool truck but hold up just as well as the tool truck tools. S&K, Tekton, and Gearwrench to name a few. I prefer Tekton mainly because their warranty process is good. Also, wrightgrip makes excellent wrenches, USA made, anti slip teeth, and not as expensive as Snap On.

I hear ya on all points here, young buck i work with (hes only been turnin wrench few years) "HFT is way better than snap on" except hes jamming a 14mm socket onto a 9/16" bolt head alot, and uses air impact instead of torque wrench for turbo install. But since hes been workin at current place where i work lil longer than i have so, he "knows" it all tools and trucks lol.As for tools, Allen also makes some good tools, mid range, particularly their impact sockets

If you ever need quick warranty on Gearwrench call apex tools tell them you were just talking to someone else and got disconnected, they were taking my info for sending a replacement... They almost always ask the item# and ship it too you and mail it the same day. I know people that got replacements for stuff they never even owned...! Kinda shady on that but on stuff I have had break myself Gearwrench has just shipped a new one to me asap... Just letting you know brother...

I'm liking the cheap comparison to tool truck brand. cheap tools aren't as cheap as they use to be but they are made better in my mind. having said that a dollar . 99 gets you what you paid for so I have bought alot of cheap tools none a dollar .99 perfect example I used my flex head Stanley ratchet it works great it was 20. bucks 3/8 drive and it has some really nice features much cheaper than a tool tuck ratchet and it really is a good tool. I can see the ajustabul handle being the weak point so I'm not going to use a pipe on the handle some of it is how you use your tools

When I get cheaper ratcheting tools, I always service them straight away and oil them so they have less back pull and last a long time. A bit of lubricant will make any tool run smoother.

TonyTheTechnician no the Milwaukee vice grips with the soft grips and the square red tightening part, give a lot of leverage to tighten as u can put a screwdriver through the hole and really tighten them up..

Harbor Freight does have great impact sockets,they have a Pittsburgh Pro line and non Pittsburgh pro line.Differance is in the metals used.The pro line is made out of chrome moly steel which holds up better for impact use.The non pro line is made out of chrome vanadium steel which is not good for impact use

I think Gearwrench are the best tools for the money. I beat the hell out of my gear wrench stuff, like i said on one of your other videos their Semi deeps are my favorite sockets out there. Just bought Tekton wrenches, and i can't complain about them either. Most of my work is on diesel engines so they get used hard lol. I love your mixture of tools, i think every great technician will have a mixture of brands. Hell i have Snapon, Mac, Cornwell, Matco and some HF. Keep doing your thing man, this is the best tool channel on KZbin hands down. You seem like a very down to earth guy. Idk if you would be interested, but i have a spreadsheet of over 300 cross referenced tools. (A lot of times big brands just put their name is stuff) Its saved me a lot of money. I bought Milwaukee wrenches and snap on ratchets. I also bought Williams sockets and ratchet wrenches. All are very nice and worth every penny. Snap on does make the best ratchet I’ll give them that the rest is way overpriced.

I am very new to the industry, starting as lube tech while attending classes. From what I am hearing starting with a mid range set is a good way to start. Any suggestions on different brands? I would like quality, but can't start just dropping tons of cash just yet.

Tom Metcalf I can understand that. Gearwrench Taiwan stuff. I try to stay away from China Gearwrench. Channel lock. Dewalt and Milwaukee. Tekton has some nice USA made products for cheap. Also southwire has some USA made pliers. Sunex and grey pneumatic for impact grade sockets.

HF Earthquake 1/2 impact guns are the best. mine has lasted 19 years. old made of iron. paid 49$ for it. still works after abuse and dealership professional use. just bought a new one that is lighter but works great. these are better then what you get from the truck. the hf colored socket sets are really nice.

You really learn to appreciate low back drag fishing bolts buried deep in crammed engine bays. The last thing I want on a long pattern flex is a quick release button because I am frequently pressing on the ratchet head to keep the socket fully engaged to the bolt head. Extremely important when breaking fasteners seized to aluminum castings.

about to pull the trigger on some expensive (to me, especially since I'm not a pro) tools. I wanted some nice sockets from Koken but god damn, that added up to over $400 worth of stuff quick!! Got all the payment info and everything entered into the checkout screen, hovering my mouse over the submit button, and I can't get those nagging "wtf is wrong with you" thoughts out of my head as I'm staring at the $ total. Better go to youtube and see what Tony the technician has to say about quality tools! That should help me decide...

I really appreciate it and hope you find alot of helpful videos. Koken can get expensive when you buy a few items. I personally haven't used them. But I have heard people say good things about them. Sometimes it's hard to make that decision. Deciding if your going to use these tools enough to justify the price. Are you going to be able to make your money back by servicing your car yourself instead of allowing someone else to do the work for a higher price. I'm sure you will find alot of other brands that are affordable as well and will fit your needs 👍👍👍

Kinda hard to say that this time though because I don't really NEED any of these sockets to get the job done. I just wanted to get a deep 1/4" set in case I run into a situation where I need them since I don't have any deeps in 1/4" yet... I could get a decent set of those for $20 without buying all this koken stuff but I can't shake the temptation right now to be extravagant. their extensions and universals are so nice

I really like my Sunex impact sockets. They seem to be built as a tank, and good value. I also like my Gearwrech ratcet 120XP comfort grip, and that's my favorite so far. Have one Snap On 3/8" ratchet. Dewalt DCF 899 high torque impact is really good for the money, but are lacking a boot. But it has never let me down. Milwaukee powertools have great guarantee and they now have a second generation High Torque model out. I prefer Milwaukee because of their power and innovations. New fuel ratchets are also coming soon. Makita angle grinder with adjustable speed is a good one. I have nerver considered buying Snap On powertools over Milwaukee even if I had the money. But they do make som good hand tools, i like the wrenches and torque wrenches. Wright Grip wrenches I think is equal to Snap On Flankdrive Plus. And they are so good to use, really sturdy built. I go for mid range and sometimes high end tools and are a DIY enthusiast with an expensive tool habit.

You definitely don't have to pay an arm and a leg for truck brand tools. I went up harbor freight and bought the cheapest ratchet and socket set I could find to test it out. Paid $5 for the set andI went to the pick yard and managed to remove an entire rear axle housing out of a 4runner with the crappy little set. Used a cheater bar on the control arm bolts and it held up surprisingly. Definitely wouldn't recommend daily use on the cheap set but I was damn impressed.

I got a replacement softgrip for my 3/8 snap on and noticed its slightly fatter and wider than my other soft grips, I thought I was given a 1/2 comfort grip but then compared it to the 1/2 and it was alot smaller, is it a new style?

hey I had to think about this post tony. it's a good one. I kinda think that most any tool not from the tool truck guy is a cheaper tool how ever some companys are better than others and I can't test the medal the tools are made of so I only know what I see. I bought a couple of snap-on sockets and my son did say I would never have to buy another but they are really not as good looking as I may have thought one is a flip lug nut socket and the other a 7/8 six point 1/2 drive nothing bad about them but they don't look like the best ever made. I have a better looking flip socket and the 7/8 looks no better than an autocraft. I paid 25. bucks for the 7/8 and a whole autocraft set was 17.99 1/2 - 15/16 the autocraft looks and works just fine. so I'm a lil bummed about some of that but having said that their is no comparison to the snap-on impact extension set I bought it just looks like the best. so you just never know now a days it's all just buyer beware

warning to anyone thinking of getting the snap on flex 3/8 with comfort grip. when the grip slides off and it will, they will not warranty it. then it will break again and you will just have a ratchet that is no good. the Pittsburgh one is way better and just over 20$. also i had a tool truck guy give me shit about warranting my 17 deep impact socket because i was not on his rout! do not buy anything from them unless you really have to.

Bro i love snap on. They are the best tools. But these days there just way to exspensive. They have also started geting into the rape business. They pretty much do the same thing that loan companys do. They give you a ridiculous loan. That eather your going to buy it 10× before its yours or it gets repossessed and resold or melted back down and sold again. Other tool brands qulity and warrntys are so good today that it just makes no sinse to buy 1 snap on tool when you could buy 10 of another brand that is just a tad under or equal in some cases. Plus if they both have lifetime warrnty. Then the life range dosent matter. If everyone is 100% honest the main reason people buy snap on is to impress there buds. Its the same thing we did in school. Everyone had to have the name brand. Its just a hussle. The snap on brand knows this they know they are rapeing peopl. They also know they are running familys. Do you know how many people ive seen the snap on truck be your best freind when there makeing the sell. Ralk the person into a $10.000 loan then next thing you know there reprocessing your tool box. And in most cases keeping tools that they know you have already payed in full. Iam telling you bro your being played bro. Its just not worth it. Its like whisky. Yea there are brands that are the best. But i dont give a damn what no one says. There are bottle of whisky out there that cost $5000 aint no whisky worth that no matter how good it is. Snap on is ripping there customers off. I mean every purchese is a profit sell. But say a gearwrench rachet cost a $1 to make well they sell it to you for $2. Well the snap on rachet coast $3 to make but yet there chargeing you $25 for it. This is what they do literly. Most places put a resonble profit margin on there stuff. Snap on is takeing advantage of the week and vanurble. There f**king you with no lube.

The mechanism is a much cheaper design with higher back drag than you higher quality tools. Stanley is considered your lower quality tools not saying they make bad tools just saying they aren't made for professional use every day. But will work great for a DIYER.

You can buy "Snap On" tools for about 1/5 of the regular price when Snap On rebrands them as "Williams". Often the Williams brand is made on the same exact assembly line as Snap On. often the designs are identicle and the only difference is the name on it. Same Lifetime warranty, but the biggest difference is that you can't take a Williams tool to a tool truck, you'd have to mail it in. (sometimes the Williams tool will even have the same part number in the Williams cataog that the Snap On too has in the Snap On catalog). Snap On purchased the rights to the Williams brand name in the early 90's when large industrial manufacturing plants stopped buying Snap On tools because Snap On had priced themselves out of the industrial market. A lot of times large factories will supply tools for their Industrial mechanics and those companies refused to pay Snap On prices. So ever since the early to mid 90's Snap On has used the Williams brand as their Industrial alternative to their normally much higher priced Snap On brand. Snap On even sells Williams tools on their website. Snap On even allows Wiliams brand to be sold in some indusrial and contractoe supply stores, and allows them top be some on Amazon.

fk snap on.... highly over rated.... I work in a s hop where we have snap on... armstrong.... matco..... mac.... and gearwrench. the hearwrench hardly ever brakes. snap on and gearwrench are head to head. snap torque wrenches top notch. gearwrench sockets and wrenches all the way. grey pneumatic makes a great 3/8" set. 8-24mm

you need a microphone connected directly to your camera, and......... i need another beer. I have been using the same 1/4, 3/8 long handle flex, and 1/2 long handle flex Snap-on ratchets to fix cars every work day for the last 13 years. No failures, i never fight the tool, i only (burp!) have to fight the car. Snap-on is worth it, or even necessary to bulldoze your way through heavy everyday use. It's easier to do a good repair using high-quality tools than harbor freight. I bought a 1/4 swivel Pittsburgh fo about $13, it lasted a week before the gear seized up and (..........burp........) i threw that fucker in the trash where it fits in perfectly with the rest of the useless bullshit that plagues our world. Do it right the first time, get the shit done, and move on. Pabst!..... Blue!..... Ribbon!
