I recall a forestry safety expett addressing a group of hobbyists on the surprisingly high proportion of severe left-hand and arm injuries amongst chainsaw operators. His analysis was simple , the split-second human instinct to reach out and deflect an unexpected object is so fast that we can't discerm between a twig, a flailing chain or in your example, a falling timber. Thanks for the reminder for constant vigilance. Too many KZbin videos contain reckless bravado and any constructive criticism is answered with muttered allusions to 'Freem'... great video👍

I’m 56, over weight and I clean my saws up in April and start them soon and each year it near kills me to get going. I’m a weekend warrior so I never really get hardened to it only if I take a week off and stick with it. Thanks for showing the close call. Good and the bad I call it. I’ve been there a few times. My late father always said, “never turn your back on a half cut tree”. And the other one was, “a tree cut off the stump has a mind of its own”!

Hi Jason I'm from north of Fredericton and I've worked in the woods most of my life I also was a part of the Maritime forest ranger school trail cutting crew back in the 90's. I find when knotchjng and falling a tree I leave a bit of wood on my back cut until everything is ready to go then pull the saw out and cut the little bit off the back This prevents you from becoming saw bound. It also allows for you to be able to put a wedge in . Give it a try. Love your videos neighbour!

Same for me!!! One week on a beach is enough for me! I will struggle getting back to a normal pace. I am only 47... Lol! You are right, about short cuts. They can be deathful. Equipment wise, you kinda have duplicates of many things. You have 2 tractors and a backhoe. 3 ways of winching. So your question is relevant. Just keep in mind the RTV has also the purpose of moving your logging gear around on the property. Think about Karen following you, as well, you better have a second equipment for that. Personnally, I am also wondering if I would renew one of the Case 430 I have for a newer cab version, around 50-60hp. But that is very early reflection. I like the side-by-side for it's speed while hauling the logging trailer. Having the hydraulic unit mounted on the trailer, I can use whatever machine I want, anytime. Sometimes, I use the tractor when the snow conditions are very bad. Anyways, I am curious to see what is going to be your next move! Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback! I’m struggling to find the right mix. I like having the 2601 dedicated to the log trailer but I use it almost every weekend so I just don’t want to unhook it! I’m thinking about a newer tractor for snow removal, winter logging with the bigger winch and offset flail mowing in the Summer… who knows how it will work out!

You are not alone. Takes a few days to get back in shape. No end of possibilities when it comes to expansion.if you go a bigger 4x4 tractor you might want to go with a larger timber trailer. Great video

Hi jason. i am following you from dawson city in the Yukon doing similar activities than you in the woodlot. Love your videos, always a good source of wisdom and good tips. as for your equipment, you seems pretty well set. I have similar equipment except for the tractor and wood processor. I started with an ATV then a small Kubota MX 5200. it was almost perfect but i didn t have a cab. so after 2 Yukon winters, i traded it in for a M7060 and that is the perfect tractor. Either mx5800 or m7060, i would strongly recommend to trade your side by side for one and maybe a small atv anyway… yeah…the list never ends! Keep up the good work!

Yes, the tractor and Cab are ideal combo i wouldn t go for less than 48hp or so to allow you to use multiples PTO adds on.... For snow removal I have a snowblade but would love to add a Inverted snow blower in the back....someday. @@OakMountainAcotts Cheers! My next goal would be a processor, but the cost of getting one up here makes it very difficult compare to east coast.

There’s not a forestry worker who hasn’t had a tree fall where they didn’t plan… especially on a windy day. I suggest using the equipment you have to its fullest potential- you’ve got a great set up.

so u asked me to spend your money for you so here goes____ thatt RTV is nice and impressive with tracks in the snow but it is mostly a luxury item so I would sell it along with the small Kubota tractor. I would purchase tracks for the Honda ATV and use it with the timber trailer but most of all I would purchase a new or used larger tractor of at least 50HP but preferably more like 70-80 with tire chains, a well cared used one without DPF tops the list. Either that or a small skidder. I would keep the old winch and the backhoe, I could go either way on the old iron B414, nest to useless once you have a larger tractor but then it wouldnt fetch much $$$, maybe 2 grand at best.

Those are some great options for sure. It is hard to get one piece of gear to do it all. The right mix is key… lots of factors that come into play like Woodlot footprint and ground impact, cutting techniques (clear cut, select cut, high grading or low value stem removal, etc… etc…). We will find the right line up eventually… thanks for watching!
