Bullfighters like Jesse Vick put themselves in harm’s way every day. It took Jesse’s mom two years to step into the arena of Billy Bob’s Texas while he was working. Even then, she kept her eyes closed, fearful of witnessing her son get hurt.
Billy Bob’s Texas was conceptualized in 1980 when Billy Bob Barnett and Spencer Taylor had the idea of converting a 100,000-foot department store into "The World’s Largest Honky Tonk." Today, its intimate arena in Fort Worth seats 360 people, allowing the crowd to be within feet of contestants and the bulls. Get even closer to the action with VRtually There in the video.
There’s no question that bull riding is dangerous. While bull riders are often the center of attention, it’s the people not on the animal that are taking the bigger risk. For this reason, bullfighters are sometimes known as the secret service of the sport. Their job is to distract the bull when riders fall so they don’t get hit. They work as a team of two, each bullfighter covering a 180-degree area around the bull.
Jesse used to play football. He saw bull fighting as a profession where he could continue to put his athleticism and competitiveness to good use. Even though his uniform includes a Kevlar vest and leg pads, he’s suffered some intense blows. One put him in the hospital for over a week. Others have caused him broken ribs and ankles. What keeps him coming back is the opportunity to help the cowboys get home safe to their family, kids, and loved ones each night.
“I fight a hundred bulls in my mind every single day” says Jesse. The mental exercise helps him anticipate each scenario and make quick judgement calls when they’re needed. See how his practice has prepared him for the ring in the video above.
