I love smoked oysters. Always keep a can handy, along with the sardines and anchovies. Can't go wrong with them on the shelf. Love your watch band. I would like to see next time, show us where you are eating (table, bench?) and you packing up the trash and throwing it out. Then the start of walking away. Satisfying, as always, my friend. I don't like oysters, unless they're New Orleans style-raw, sitting in their half shells on ice, lots of lemon juice and maybe a bit of hot sauce. Just slide them down...yum! These are good to me only because I never have to chew and actually taste the oysters! Hahaha! The juxtaposition of the crepe with a cod & cheese snack right after seemed odd...but then there were other things to see and imagine the taste that followed. Made me peckish, and I just had dinner! The scene of that gentleman gingerly crossing the stone bridge during the dashimaki opening part, there is something moving about it. I don't know why. Probably reminds me there are parts of life I just can't rush or barge through. The onigiri looks particularly savoury. It looks it might pair well with a cup of freshly brewed black. The cheese and cod snack is pretty intriguing too.

I noticed you do a great job of mentioning when food items pair well with alcohol, and the smoked oysters remind me almost of a Spanish tapas style dish small and elegant. Are their Japanese style bars or pubs in Japan that sell side dishes like the smoked oysters with whiskey saki or beer in an opened can like this as I think it would be a fun presentation to eat with alcohol in that type of setting? My personal favorite looked like would be the oysters or the egg cake cooked in broth, but they all looked amazing! Thanks for sharing!

I went to Japan many years ago and the only convenience store I remember was Lawson (I think that's right?). I bought a lot of Pocari Sweat while visiting. I think the most strking thing about the convenience store food is how much care goes into presentation when compared with the slop you get in boxes in the west 😂 For a slim guy, I don't know where you put all this food! 😂

I love how you can eat and eat . We don't eat at convenience stores. You get gas tobacco and drinks and alcohol and that's it. Where I live the stores don't carry food. I was in Shin-Yokohama last week for a concert and there was 2 7-elvens, 2 Lawson Family Mart, a Burgerking with in half a square block of my Hotel i was staying in. Talk about covenant. Now why can't the U.S cities do the same.

It really is convenient to have so many options so close! The density and variety of convenience stores and fast food outlets in Japanese cities are hard to match elsewhere. It’s a combination of high population density, customer demand, and urban planning that makes it work so well in Japan. Maybe one day, U.S. cities will adopt a similar approach!

After shopping at most American convenience stores, you might die from food poisoning. Also, our convenience stores are expensive! Not that convenient, after all! I went to a local asian market today and bought a can of milk tea. I LOVED IT! It was supposed to be Japanese, but pretty sure it said “product of Taiwan” brand name is Cravi. How popular is such canned milk tea is Japan? It was very tasty!

Milk tea is popular in East Asian and Southeast Asian countries. You can make it at home, buy it at coffee shops, buy a bottle or can from the supermarket, etc. Most Southeast Asian and East Asian countries has its own variant of milk tea as the concentration and ratio of milk and tea will vary and the type of milk and black tea will differ depending on country. However, the Taiwan variant and the Japanese variant are quite close. This is because of their shared history (please google colonial Taiwan under Japanese rule to learn more) and the leaders of Taiwan in the old days (after they had to flee China when the communists won the civil war there) were educated in Japanese unis and military academy, which is why there is similarity in some types of foods, and certain Japanese words are borrowed into everyday Taiwanese Mandarin speech. Indeed, even before formal Japanese rule over Taiwan in WWII, Taiwan was seen as a spot for Japanese from Okinawa to do trade/business and attend a kind of early 20th century version of medical college. There's an academic book in English written about this titled "Liminality of the Japanese Empire" by a Japanese colonial history professor. [please note that I use British English, spelling, word definitions and colloquialisms may be different, e.g., what Americans calls "Asian" refers to East Asians, but in the UK and Commonwealth, "Asian" means people from people from Indian, Sri lanka (Ceylon), Pakistan and thereabouts as we call people of East Asian heritage "oriental" and no one feels any offence at that and I'm saying that an oriental myself.]

​@@experience_japan lol yea I've recently become addicted to Boba tea ..in front new Zealand they have stores in the mall close to food courts that make and sell them but they aren't cheap like 6-7 dollars a cup 😢 I usually get the make at home supermarket packet ones ( like 5-6 bucks for 8-10 servings ((both of tea and the Boba balls that often come in the syrup of the flavour you choose) you microwave the Boba balls in the packet then tip into cup add 2 blocks ice to cool then add milk and flavour tea sachet ..my fav is brown sugar Boba

We have no Lawson or Seven Eleven or Family Mart here in France and it's a pity. I am addicted to Glico's Giant Caplico 🤤 It's not really the taste I like, it's the texture.

The Family Mart here in China is almost the same but with products that are more Chinese. But the sandwiches and onigiri are still the same. I am sure the quality of the products in the Japanese stores are better though.

Surprised to see the tomato juice in shop. I thought, it's not popular in Asia. This net of shops in Japan - Lawson, 7/11, FamilyMart - they are very comfortable for lone or lazy people for their food assortment and chip prices. I wish, once will have something like it in Russia.
