Both correct, see a meditation called "The six healing sounds". Traditional Kung Fu is moving meditation.

This shouldn't be viewed as a set that's a demonstration of combat moves, although it has that. This is an exercise set that is meant in every way to be done slowly like this. This is the set that gives mad monk power (spear bending with the throat, etc) if done right for years. This set is incredibly valuable if used right. See this Sifu doing FuHok if you want something faster, a better combat demonstration.

The sounds help to simulate the internal organs and the breath in used the strengthen the internal and the external means of the body.In short ,sound is use to assist chi and chi is used to increase internal/external strength. Chi is the breath.without breath there can be no life.

This is actually real Hung Keun Kung fu , please don't make fun of Mr Chiu. The noises he makes while doing the form is actually part of the form , it's chinese tradition to make "unnecessary" noises. If you watch a lot of old kung fu movies , you'll notice this. I've actually seen him perform this act in San Franscico before so please respect him.

my understanding is that a form itself shouldn'' be so strenuous as to cause internal damage but you can learnt sounds, meditaitons and other things in a set that are meant to help stabilize or heal organs after a fight.

Dude, O-sifu! I met him at a con for like 37 seconds with Todd Roy, and then I saw him in the Kwoon, loved his legit Hung Gar styling. Any student of his is a brother of mine. And yeah I like Sifu Lam's style more than what I learned in China, more simple and less redundant, though Sifu Chiu's version seems to be the more common. The sounds tend to vary, I can't say I've seem a "standardized" set of sounds, probably because different people's organs respond to different sounds.

Really it's because we're not in conflict, we're simply speaking about different parts of the same truth. The sounds ARE for Qi and they are traditional and have been removed by some teachers. He speaks the portion of the truth he knows I speak what I know and through that we both, and those who read, learn and grow. That is just as much part of Kung Fu, or any martial art that practices self cultivation, as any fist set or sparring practice.

That's because when Bruce Lee was alive "Wushu" was in it's infancy, no one had mastered it because people were still practicing real gung fu, which wasn't fully stomped out in China until the 80's or so..

He also doesn't claim to be a wushu master. I'm not sure if i understand your comment correctly, but grandmaster chiu chi ling practices southern shaolin hung gar kung fu, which hasn't much in common with wushu.

Isn't this his version of the Iron Wire set?
@Cyclonus5
@Cyclonus5 13 жыл бұрын
@fujitafunk I heard from Sifu Wing Lam that all the sounds are different "dragon sounds". My understanding of the Iron wire/iron thread set is that qi is built up during the slow movements and then distributed through the body through the various movements and stance transitions but there are a lot of movements that you can tell are just meant to stretch, tense and then relax the body, since relaxation is essential to good qi flow and breathing is essential to relaxation. The sounds help that.

If you mean Mantak Chia's six healing sounds, yeah I've done those, though I think those are more standardized than what I've seen in Iron wire, This set is different both in sounds and minor details that what I learned, though no less legitimate, The 6 healing sounds meditation itself includes stretches, so there's obviously a physical element to internal cleansing of qi and I'm sure those are part of why Iron wire is the way it is.

I agree, though I think compartmentalization and strict division are problems too. Hung Gar's bridging techniques, Wing Chun's chain punching, and Karate's dynamic body power can each be found in all three systems but it's not taught through out, either due to ignorance or because Teachers who want to try to preserve their idea of the art believe Chain punching is "too Wing Chun" or Bridging is "too Chinese" forcing your to cross train to get the most out of your art when it's not necessary.

The "laughing" and "noise" are very traditional. However, a lot of people, including Chinese, think it's funny and/or strange to see it. Some styles of Hung kuen have even removed the sounds. They are supposed to activate different organs allowing chi to flow through. They also correspond to different animals as well. I believe the "laughing" represents the dragon. I may be wrong though.

I forget that Bruce Lee really was the first to teach mainstream predominantly white western students his Jun Fan Gungfu (his approach to Wing Chun; he hadn't founded JKD yet). Now it's commonplace to see karate and wushu and TKD teachers all over the place - and most of these are western senseis and instructors. I'm happy to see that it's still quite rare to find a traditional Hung school. I'd like that to remain out of the mainstream so it can be treasured for what it is to us who love it.

If you mean the Taoist healing sounds like Mantak Chia's healing sounds yes I know those. I think that the only difference is that those are standardized while this version of the iron wire is different both subtly in techniques and sounds from the version I learned so its less standardized.
@Cyclonus5
@Cyclonus5 11 жыл бұрын
well every Chinese system has Qi Gung in it somewhere, due to Shaolin or Taoist lineage, but many first gen teachers weren't taught it (due to Chinese secrecy against non Asians), many western teachers don't know it (because they didn't think it was important) , and China down plays/removes it because of Mao's 4 olds, and yet it requires probably the most time and training to master

well what my understanding is, is that the idea of doing a set so hard you do damage to the organs is a product of western misinterpretation who see a form as only one thing be it practicing techniques on imaginary opponents, a calisthenic stretch, or meditation rather than all of the above. It's only modern wushu sets that emphasize so much external force while traditional sets like the iron wire are less flashy but have more subtleties that are learned and extrapolated later.
@Cyclonus5
@Cyclonus5 11 жыл бұрын
it's more like a framework for sportifying Chinese martial arts so that regular people don't have efficient fighting skills for a revolution and emphasizing personal growth and fitness over self defense. It's worked to some degree since all the kids who don't practice are all like "gung fu isn't about fighting" while at the same time trying to ignore the traditional qi gung elements that are at the center of those growth skills

interesting...as I grow older I am using what I have learned more for health and balance. Qi gung being paramount of course - not that I want to eventually be able to lift a pail of water with my f*cking eye (seen that, it was gross as hell) or pull a car with my chin but certainly the balance it brings and the un-hampering of qi flow...
