For those interested: this thin plastic layer is protecting the can from being corroded by coke. It also protects from leaching metals out of the can apparently.

Basically the drain cleaner ate away at the aluminum. Before manufacturers put the drink in, they spray the van with a special coating, so the drink doesn’t taste like aluminum and so the drink doesn’t eat at the can. That was just the solid spray I think. But I don’t think the spray gives off bpa. That’s just the plastics in cheap water bottles.

Like what was said before. Aluminum cans have a thin plastic lining on the inside. It’s something already well known, but this also shows how powerful and dangerous drain cleaner really is. It can dissolve aluminum so imagine what it can do to your body.

Tried this, there was nothing left over.. So if there is a protective layer then it gets dissolved in the acid.. also it releases a shit ton of gas so if you try this you need to try it outside.. i think this video is bullshit. Also i didnt need to sand away the outside.

Also, just a small note. The amount of time spent to dissolve the thinner layer of metal is not enough to dissolve the thicker base part. If left to a longer time (without saturating the lye solution of course, which I doubt it will), it will dissolve the bottom part, too!

The plastic is called kegliner, it’s been used since metal drink cans came into use in the 1930s, if you ever find an old can from the 1960s a lot of the steel will be rusted away with the keglining still intact

My question is why didn't the bottom, that is the same aluminum dissolve? Pop cans are extruded aluminum that means the bottom is the same as the sides. In the bottom was also in the solvent but somehow did not dissolve like the rest of it did.

It's not actually plastic. It more closely related to furniture varnish. It's on all exposed surfaces of the can. That's why he had to sand it off the outside. With a stronger acid, that step would not have been necessary.

I tried doing this using almost the same exact drain cleaner... it only sort of worked. The problem with the gel drain cleaner is that it doesn't produce bubbles that pop easily. The bubbles form and begin to collect in a foam. The foam rises and eventually gets inside the can and begins reacting with the top of the can... it overflowed and was a huge mess. Also, it took like 3 hours... Just a reality check ;)

They didn't sand that part with the sandpaper, so the acid from the drain cleaner didn't react with the aluminum cos it has a protective coating on it.
